How To Frame A Mirror. A step-by step guide

Select a 1/4-inch-thick mirror in the size you desire.

Purchase the necessary wood. You might have the plywood backing and molding pieces for the frame cut to size at the home improvement store to make it easier to transport them and to save you the hassle.

A 1/4-inch-thick piece of plywood that’s 2 inches longer and wider than the mirror.

Four 1/4-inch-thick lattice pieces that are 2 inches wide. Two should be the same length as the mirror and two should be as long as the width of the mirror.

Four 2-inch-wide pieces of molding. Two should be 1.5 inches shorter than the mirror’s width and two should be 1.5 inches shorter than the mirror’s length.

Four wooded rosette squares that measure 3.5 inches.

Place the 4 lattice pieces around the mirror. Attach them to the front of the plywood with

wood glue and apply pressure with spring clamps.

Leave the glue to dry overnight before removing the clamps.

Center the mirror on top of the piece of plywood.

Lay the 4 molding pieces on top of the lattice pieces. The molding pieces should slightly overlap the edge of the glass and frame the mirror.

Set the rosettes in each corner. Apply glue to the lattice and press the molding and

rosettes firmly into place. Cover the mirror and frame with a terry-cloth towel and

place a heavy piece of wood on top. Wait at least 24 hours for the glue to dry.

Arrange the molding pieces and rosettes to make the mirror frame.

Flip the mirror over to secure the molding pieces with

1-inch-long screws. Place a single screw through the middle of each

rosette. Place a single screw in the vertical molding

pieces, about 2 inches from the bottom. Place 2 screws through each horizontal molding

piece, about an inch from each end.

Attach picture wire to the back of the mirror for

hanging. Measure one-third downs from the top of the frame on

both sides. Screw a D-ring at each measurement point. Run a piece of picture wire between the D-rings, but with

a peak of 3 inches added. Cut the wire and attach it to each D-ring.

Sand any rough edges on the molding and rosettes before finishing.
