    Why Worms?

    The uses of

    earthworms are many.Earthworms are used forfish bait, composting, aprotein source for animalfeed, and in producingp h a r m a c e u t i c a l s(particularly in China).Earthworms in soil pro-

vide abundant benefits in increasing water infiltration, soilstructure, and nutrient cycling. While taken for granted overthe years by many, it has been only recently that scientists, soil ecologists, horticulturists, educators, and waste manag-ers have led the way in expanding our understanding of these

    remarkable creatures.

Within the past couple decades earthworms, par-ticularly the species Eisenia fetida (redworm, red wiggler),have been found capable of transforming huge quantities ofgarbage into something akin to gold. Earthworm excreta, known as earthworm castings, are now known to containplant growth regulators and other substances that make themnatures most remarkable form of bio-fertilizer and bio-pestcontrol agent.

    Worms in the News

You may have seen reports about earthworms ontelevision (in an episode ofER, for example), in nationalmagazines (US News & World Report, Newsweek), on theradio or in dozens of metropolitan and local newspapers. These brief stories have done much to stir up interest in ver-miculture and vermicomposting. Internet browsers may findinformation about earthworms on some websites, but not allinformation on the Internet is either reliable or up-to-date.Since much of the latest scientific information is just nowbeing published in scholarly journals, traditional sources ofinformation such as libraries and bookstores are not the mostfruitful places to find news and in-depth data about the earth-worm industry.

At VermiCo, weve tried to fill the information voidin several ways. First, we offer over 30 books about earth-worms and the earthworm business. Second we have a vari-ety ofvideos that take you to places it might cost hundredsor even thousands of dollars to see yourself. Each videoserves a unique purpose in telling an important part aboutsome aspect of vermiculture or vermicomposting. Third, we publish a bi-monthly subscription newsletter that keepsreaders informed about the growing earthworm industry. And fourth, we offer conferences, seminars and work-shops where you can receive abundant information, meet

industry leaders, tour exciting facilities, and network withlike-minded and energetic people who want to have animpact on their environment and on their world.

    Different Desires

Over the years we have come to learn that thereare a wide variety of interest groups within our worldwidecustomer base. While we havent been introduced to eachone, we know our clients and customers include state regu-latory agencies, waste management boards, non-profit cor- porations, schools, teachers, students, US and foreigncomposting facilities, earthworm growers, worm binmanufacturers, agricultural extension offices, state andlocal recycling agencies, environmental consultants, uni-versities, libraries, farmers, inventors, and en-

trepreneurs. In fact, this is just a fractionof the many different types of back-grounds and interests that our custom-ers and clients represent. Whether ithas been a commercial airline pilot orengineer considering a new venture, ora family helping one of the kids for aschool science project, weve tried tooffer something that will increase your understanding ofand involvement with earthworms.

    Decide For Yourself

Getting involved in the challenging and stimulat-ing world of earthworm discovery can be as easy as order-ing a book, a video and a pound or two of earthworms. You can get started right away. Build a simple worm binfor your kitchen scraps or buy a specially-designed unitwell ship directly to you. When you subscribe to CastingCall newsletter, youll get the latest news of the earth-worm industry brought to you every 60 days. Be sure tocheck out our discounted package deals for extra savings.

Whether your interest is in home vermicompost-ing, starting a classroom or school-wide project, installingan institutional or commercial system, or becoming an as-sociate grower and joining our distribution network, there

is something here for everyone who has an interest inearthworms.

There are, perhaps, few people who realize thatCharles Darwin, the famous biologist, conducted a lifelongstudy of earthworms. At the end of his life he pennedthese words: It may be doubted whether there are manyother animals which have played so important a part inthe history of the world as have these lowly organized

creatures. We hope that at least a part of his fascinationwith earthworms might one day become your own.

Wine Country Worms: Sonoma Worm FarmIn 1992 Jack Chambers, a commercial airline pilot, established a five-acre worm farm and began marketing earthworms and

castings produced from dairy manure and, occasionally, alfalfa. What is it like to operate a wormfarm and to manage the day-to-day activities? What factors do such things as climate, geographic lo-cation and proximity to markets have to do with the success or failure of suchan enterprise? We asked Jack to take us on a tour of his facility and to sharehis experiences as he continues to shape his operation, now positioned to no-ticeably influence wine grape production in California.

    Earthworms

What Kind of Earthworms Are Recommended?

At this time, there are over 4,400 species of earthworms that have been identified by tax-

onomists. While some scientists have divided these into three primary groups (epigeic,i.e. litter dwelling, anecic, burrowing, soil dwelling, and endogeic deep soil), a

two-fold division seems more convenient: Earthworkersare worms such as the com-mon nightcrawler(Lumbricus terrestris) an excellent earthworm for gardens because itcreates burrows, mixes soils and improves tilth. While these are desirable for your gar-den, they are difficult if not impossible to grow in bins. Composting earthworms, on theother hand, dwell exclusively in organic matter that they process and transform into an extremely valuable bio-fertilizer and biopest-control agent, castings. It is not recommended that you put these directly into your garden, because they will not createburrows.

At VermiCo, weve chosen to focus exclusively on one species,Eisenia fetida, (pronounced eye-SEN-ee-uh FE-ti-duh) a com-posting earthworm, for several reasons. First, it is a durable earthworm, well-suited for the rigors of harvesting and shipping.Second, it tolerates a wide range of temperaturesfrom nearly 90 degrees Fahrenheit to nearly freezing. (Other, more exoticspecies are less tolerant of temperature extremes). Third,Eisenia fetida earthworms (also called redworms orred wigglers)

are extremely prolific, largely due to consistent production of cocoons with remarkable hatching rates of young that reach sex-ual maturity in as few as seven weeks. Some have claimed these earthworms, when conditions are optimal, can double theirbiomass (weight of live earthworms) in 60-90 days. And finally, redworms are the most commonly used species throughoutthe vermicomposting industry. For obvious reasons, an earthworm that is the most widely used and traded will have the great-est demand and value.

A conservativeguestimate is thatE. fetida earthworms process at least their body weight per day in organic material. How-ever, this amount depends on the presence of key process variablestemperature, moisture, porosity, and quality of feedstocks. These earthworms are capable of consuming their full body weight and even 1-1/2 times their weight when conditions areright. Their food consists primarily of microorganisms within decomposing organic matter where carbon sources (such asdried leaves, shredded paper, cardboard) have been mixed with nitrogen sources (such as vegetative food waste, grass clip-pings, manure). Earthworms thrive best in a warm, very moist, aerobic, dark, little-disturbed environment of 100% decompos-ing organic matter. Toxic elements such as salt and high ammonia concentrations can be lethal. Vermicomposting happensbest when there isplenty of moisture in an aerobic environment at temperatures between 65-80 degrees.

Our earthworms are sold by weight, not by count, since no one spends time counting thousands of earthworms. While it hasbeen estimated there are approximately 1,000 adultEisenia fetida earthworms per pound, we simply state that we will ship liveearthworms by the poundnot worm count or size. Larger sized worms tend to get harvested and shipped.

To innoculate a new system where bedding is present, we suggest a minimum of one pound of earthworms per square foot ofarea. Where more information is desired, we recommend book #103 Worms Eat My Garbage for a thorough treatment ofsmall-scale, home and school vermicomposting and book #101 Commercial Vermiculture for details about growing earth-worms for profit in larger-scale systems.

The goal ofvermicomposting(composting with earthworms) is to convert our garbage into the earthwormsgold.castings.Worm castings can be added to potted plants, gardens, lawns, trees, bushes, and made into potting soil (use only 20% by vol-ume in mixes). Liquid extracts called castings teas can be made and sprayed on plants for foliar feeding and used as a bio-insecticide or used as a soil drench. Unfortunately our space here does not permit a full description of the many exciting dis-coveries now being made in earthworm science and soil ecology, particularly in the area of horticulture and agriculture whereplant growth trials and bio-pest control tests have proven nearly miraculous benefits of using earthworm castings.

In her witty and offbeat style, Amy Stewart shows just how muchdepends on the humble worm. Highly recommended! One of the best.

Since we began the two-day Seminar in September 1999, we've had many requests for thematerial in theBest Management Practices in VermicompostingManual. Several have askedif the course manual is for sale. Until now, we've only made the manual available at theSeminar, largely to encourage people to attend the live performance. However, we realizethat many people, for many reasons, simply cannot attend, but would appreciate having ac-cess to the material found in the manual.

Our first manual contained about 250 pages and our attendees spoke very highly of it. Thecurrent, updated edition contains over 420 pages divided into 13 tabbed sections. In the ac-tual seminar, power point presentations, slides and videos are used in the first 4 or five sec-tions only. Because of the great number of guest speakers used, we have never covered allthe material contained in the manual during the live presentations. There simply has not

been enough time to cover all the material over the two-day event.

If you are unable to attend one of our Seminars but would like to purchasethe manual, we are making it available for just $249 with free shipping inthe US and $35 shipping outside US. The purchase of the manual also in-cludes a coupon for a special half-price offer (for one person), for a futureseminar registration. Please note that all sales are final and no refunds willbe given.

CAN-O-WORMS BINTaking out the garbage has never been so fun! The Can-O-Worms worm farm is fun, easy to use

and it gives you free plant food. It is so versatilethat it can be left indoors for apartment dwellers,on a balcony, in a shed or in a shaded outdoorlocation for those with a yard.

Now you can turn your household waste into"Black Gold" worm castingsone of the rich-

est bio-fertilizers known to man. Turn your kitchen scraps, yard wasteand even junk mail into valuable plant food with the help of worms. Didyou know that just 1 pound of earthworms can convert pound of foodscraps into valuable worm castings EVERY DAY?

    WORM WIGWAM

The Worm Wigwam is designed to process large amounts of food and other organicwaste. The byproduct, finished cast-ings, is a readily usable or salable product reducing the need for chemical fertilizer. Just turn the harvest handle, remove thedoor and collect the earthworm castings from the bottom tray. There is good evidence that a large proportion of the essentialplant nutrients that are in a relatively soluble form are washed out in other systems. The Worm Wigwam helps retain thesenutrients.

The Worm Wigwam requires no compost turning and requires no separating of worms and partiallydecomposed waste from the finished castings. It is 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide and weighs 86 pounds.Users have reported up to hundreds of pounds of waste composted per year. The Worm Wigwam isheated and insulated for optimum year-round use. It features a raised floor design providing maximumaeration for faster worm feeding and shorter composting times. The system never needs to be emptiedor restarted, using 100% of the composting area. Dick Sloane, of the National Institute of Health hasthis to say about the Worm Wigwam . This is the best vermicomposting system that I have seen todate. Anyone interested in vermicomposting to accomplish organic waste diversion should definitelyconsider the Worm Wigwam . Two years later and ours are still diverting tons of organic waste

    from the landfill.

After years of scientific investigations with earthworm castings, Dr. Scott Subler, Ph.D., a leading soilecologist and authority on plant health, became firmly convinced of their exceptional value for improving

soil quality and enhancing plant health and growth. Frustrated by the gap between the exciting findings ofthese university studies and the ability to put this valuable knowledge into the hands of those who coulduse it, Dr. Subler developed Living Soil products to bring the remarkable properties of earthworm cast-ings to people who care for plants.
