What Is Snoring

Getting To Know Snoring Better

Although snoring seems to be quite prevalent among a number of people, it remains to be an abnormal sleep phenomenon. Statistics show that around 45% of adults experiences snoring from time to time while a significant 25% of the population are reported to be habitually snoring.

Snoring may affect people coming from any age group. However, men seem to be more prone to experiencing this condition. Although snoring may not be as serious as the other medical conditions, it still should be given attention as it does not only have certain health implications, it may also be quite emotionally and socially disturbing.

Snoring basically takes place when there are physical impediments that affect the flow of air through the mouth and nose during sleep. The unusual sound produced is mainly due to the vibration of the throat muscles as the air passageway is blocked. The obstruction may be observed in any of the following areas:

• Nasal passages. Blockage in these passages results to difficulty in breathing. Extra effort is necessary. With this, the soft tissues of the throat may collapse which, in turn, may further cause snoring. Given this, people with sinus infections, colds, or allergic rhinitis are reported to be snoring.

• Throat. Some people, by nature, have very relaxed or soft throat muscles which collapse easily. As the muscles collapse, the air passageway narrows, resulting to the unusual sound produced. Furthermore, those who have bulky throat muscles are likewise prone to snoring since the air passageway is narrower than the ideal.

• Opening from the nose going to the throat. A long palate or even long uvula significantly narrows down this particular opening. Also, given the fact that the tissues and muscles are situated closely to each other, they hit each other during breathing.

Page 5: How to Get Rid of Snoring

Other deformities in the structure of the mouth and surrounding areas may also lead to snoring. For instance, a malpositioned jaw may negatively affect the overall movement of the mouth leading to muscular tension that results to unusual flapping of the other mouth and throat tissues.

Indeed, snoring is such a disturbing condition that needs attention. In addition, it can be an indication of a more serious medical condition such as sleep apnea. Although this may not always be the case, it is still ideal that one seeks treatment as soon as the symptoms are observed so that if in case it indeed has other medical implications, it can be addressed early on. Furthermore, since snoring occurs during sleep, it prevents a person from having quality rest every night which he may or may not be conscious of. This explains why some snorers complain of drowsiness or headaches during the day which are, obviously, effects of a disturbed sleep.

Snoring is often observed, not by the snorer himself, but by the people around him. Socially, it can have adverse effects especially if a person sleeps near another person. For couples, this can really be a problem.

Treatment comes in various forms and the results may differ from one person to another. It is advisable that one consults a doctor first to identify which one is most suitable. The bottom line in all these is that snoring should not be taken for granted and must be treated the soonest possible time.

Who Is At Risk Of Snoring

Watch Out! You May Already Be At Risk Of Snoring!

Snoring is something that may be experienced by people, young or old. It is quite a common condition which explains why some people do not find it disturbing anymore. However, no matter how prevalent it may be, it is still important to have it treated since it also has negative effects to health and wellness in general.

Not everyone who snores, though, is aware that he actually snores. Normally, the condition is observed by people who sleep near the person snoring. In case a person sleeps alone, there are certain indicators that he can look into which may point out the occurrence of snoring during sleep.

One of these indicators is the feeling of constant sleepiness. Although snoring generally occurs unconsciously, it may still pose some disturbances in rest since the passage of air through the nose and throat is involved. Recurrent headaches may also be the result of not having quality rest.

Self-check is indeed necessary since anyone can be at risk for snoring. However, there are some people who, based on statistics, are more prone to it.

Older people, for one, have greater tendency to snore. This is mainly because compared to younger people, their muscles are more relaxed. When throat muscles and tissues relax so much during sleep, they collapse and block off the air passageway.

Moreover, men have been seen to be more prone to snore. The explanation to this, though, is yet unclear but records show that men are usually the ones who go for treatment.

Snoring, in general, has a lot to do with the quality of the muscles and tissues of the throat as well as the structure of the mouth. Obese or overweight people obviously have bulkier throat muscles and tissues which make the air passageway

Page 7: How to Get Rid of Snoring

narrower. The palate and uvula bumps into each other which leads to the unusual sound. Also, more effort is necessary in breathing resulting to fiercer vibrations in the throat area. Thus, overweight people who have been diagnosed for snoring are normally advised to lose weight.

In addition, the structure of the mouth and its back part may contribute a lot to snoring. Those who have been born with certain mouth structure anomalies are more likely to exhibit the condition. This again have something to do with the abnormal flow of air along the passageway.

Not only is snoring dependent on certain inborn physical structures, it can also be genetic in nature. Although the exact genetic makeup leading to it is yet to be identified, it cannot be denied that some people are simply genetically predisposed to exhibit it.

On the contrary, a lot of controllable factors may put a person at risk for snoring. One is the dependency to alcohol and certain drugs. Drugs that relax the muscles too much cause snoring, an example of which are those taken in by people who cannot sleep well. Alcohol is included since it has similar effects.

The population of those at risk for snoring obviously is a big one. A lot of people can be at risk. Given this, it is important that one constantly checks himself out to see if treatment is necessary. Snoring may be more serious than it seems. No doubt that intervention at the soonest possible time is necessary.

What Causes Adult Snoring

(sleep apnea, mouth obstruction, medications that induce snoring, obesity, health conditions, etc.)

The Roots of Adult Snoring

No doubt that snoring is such a disturbing condition. Not only is it socially annoying, it can also be an indicator of more serious medical conditions. Unfortunately, though, statistics show that a significant percentage of adults complains of snoring and seeks treatment for it.

The causes of snoring, especially among adults, are quite varied. In line with this, treatment differs from one person to another. It is important that one seeks the advice of an expert before deciding on any form of intervention to be able to achieve the most desired result. Doctors identify the best possible treatment depending on what caused the symptoms in the first place.

So what are some of the causes of adult snoring? In general, unusual sounds are said to be produced because of the vibration and bumping of the structures at the back side of the mouth towards the throat. These structures strike each other because the size of the passageway becomes narrower than ideal.

Given the fact that the causes of snoring are greatly structural in nature, certain types of people become more prone to it. For example, people who are obese or overweight tend to have bulkier throat muscles. In effect, the air passageway becomes narrower, the soft palate and uvula bumps into each other, and breathing takes more effort than usual.

Likewise, throat muscles that are too relaxed often lead to snoring. This is because these soft muscles collapse along the passageway itself causing an air blockage. In addition, when the tongue relaxes so much, it tends to plunge backwards towards the throat which obviously becomes a major blockage as well. More often than not, people who take in too much alcohol experience this extreme muscle relaxation and snore.

Page 9: How to Get Rid of Snoring

Moreover, certain prescription drugs elicit the same effect as alcohol. Examples of these drugs are those which are intended to induce sleep or lower depression level. Thus, people who have difficulty sleeping and have become dependent on these types of drugs are more likely to be snoring during their deep sleep.

Enlargement of tonsils, although this is commonly experienced by children, is also being pointed out as a cause. This again is mainly due to the fact that the air passageway becomes narrower and air does not flow smoothly.

Furthermore, having a palate longer than usual contributes to snoring. The situation becomes worse if the uvula is long as well. These structures bump more with each other leading to stronger vibrations and louder snoring sounds.

Common colds and sinusitis may also bring about snoring, but not habitual snoring. It only occurs since the nasal airway is blocked and both intake and uptake of air becomes harder. In such cases, snoring must be gone as a person recovers from colds or sinusitis.

For structural causes, surgery is often suggested as the best treatment. However, there are several options in the market which are also designed to give remedy to these structural problems. One example is called Continuous Positive Airway Pressure which comes in the form of a mask that aims to bring in pressure to the throat. This is a great alternative for those who would not want to subject themselves to surgery.

On top of all these, one should remember that a good understanding of one’s condition will eventually lead to the best possible solution. This may be achieved with the help of an expert who can give accurate diagnosis.

What Causes Snoring In Kids

(allergies, health conditions, obesity, etc.)

Kids Snore too

Have you ever been to the zoo? If yes, have you experienced listening to the sounds of the animals – their snorting, wheezing, gasping and whistling? Hearing this in a zoo is normal since animals do make these kinds of sounds. But if you are hearing this other than the zoo, within the confines of your home or your bedroom, this only means one thing, your snore sounds like the animals in the zoo.

You have to know that snoring is not done by adults. Young ones, like you, snore too and if this is the case, most likely you have an underlying health condition that needs to be addressed. Snoring happens when the person has inability to let air move freely within the nose and mouth during sleeping. The unpleasant sound is caused by the structures built inside you particularly in the mouth and throat like the soft palate, uvula, upper throat and tongue.

Kids may only find out if their brother, sister or friend tease him because of his snoring and this can quite traumatic for a child. This is why its important to address problem as soon as possible because of the social reasons attached to snoring not to mention the medical which may hurt if not solved early.

Why are your snoring?

There are a number of reasons why people snore, for kids, these are the common symptoms of snoring:

• Nasal passages or airways that are blocked due to severe colds and sinus infection. This can cause a rattling sound in your snoring.• Seasonal allergies are common problems to children who snore because they may suffer from allergy-related disease of the respiratory. This may cause their noses to be stuffy making them snore.• Snoring can also be caused by a deviated or deformed septum. This makes people difficult to breathe therefore contributes to their snoring. Some people have it corrected and straightened to help them breathe.• Swollen adenoids and tonsils. This is located inside your head near the nasal passages. If they are swollen or enlarged, this can cause too the snore.

Page 11: How to Get Rid of Snoring

• Drinking alcohol should be eliminated because it relaxes your muscles and throat thus contributes to snoring.• Overweight can cause your air passageways to be narrowed that lead to snoring.

Snoring can be very easy to handle if you know how. Here some basic steps to help you stop snoring:

• Small, white strips called nasal strips can help in opening your airways wide. These strips are the ones you see on sports players’ nose to guide them in their breathing. You can also use this to help you reduce your snoring.• Putting your bed on the reclining position for several inches to help you be elevated and in turn have no problems in breathing.• You can never go wrong with your doctor around. Ask him of some ways to help open up your airways so there’s no difficulty in breathing and no snoring.• Be healthy and develop an effective sleeping patterns and habits.• For severe snoring, you may be put into a sleeping clinic so the doctor can observe you and record your sleeping habits that may contribute to your sleeping.

Solving your snoring problem will benefit both you and your parents. So if you observed some of the symptoms of how severe your snoring is, immediately do something about it and have easier sleep again.

Cause Of Snoring:

health implications

Snoring Health Implications

Snoring may seem to be a normal condition that you take for granted for a long time until finally it has taken its toll and become an uncontrollable, grave concern because complications have already arose.

Mild snoring can be resolved by simple changes in ones lifestyle and application of easy methods. However, snoring worsens if not addressed early. It may lead to chronic, severe snoring which may require advance methods of treatment like surgery. It can also be the other way around. Snoring can be a symptom of a much more complicated medical concern gone wrong because of neglect.

Snoring is very much an annoying habit caused by a number of reasons and in return result to a much graver medical problem. First, the obvious result of snoring is sleep deprivation. There are a lot of effects resulting to sleep deprivation and this related to your productivity during the day. Since, you have not rested well and perhaps for how many days, productivity will be lessened, you are more tired and so sleepy at the same time. This can also lead to unclear thinking making your credibility to put forward sound decisions is questioned. Lacking sleep also fails your immune system making you more prone to sickness like catching colds, flu and other illnesses.

Second, with all these results of sleep deprivation, it aggravates your vulnerability to growing some serious diseases like type II diabetes, stroke, hypertension, high blood pressure and other heart diseases which can lead to death. With the nature of snoring, it too can develop into worst sleeping disorders like sleep apnea, insomnia and other abnormal conditions.

For children who snore, it worsens their vulnerability to developing allergies and respiratory diseases. In some cases, snoring is a symptom of mental impairment and behavioral problems during adolescent life.

Problems with your snoring can be resolved through three treatment categories:

• Behavior treatments – these kinds of treatments are those performed by the patients themselves which involves maybe drastic changes in the lives such as weight loss, reduce alcohol, sedatives and anti-histamine intakes. This also include

Page 13: How to Get Rid of Snoring

some alterations in your sleeping patterns like lying on your side while sleeping that your back.• Oral devices – these treatments require the use of dental devices such as mouthpieces to open and position your jaw forward. Another device is the one called as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) where a mask should be put on your nose while sleeping and it is attached to a pump that forcibly pumps air to your airways.• Surgeries – these are treatments of the last resort when snoring is already chronic. Most of the surgeries give post-operative pains. Some offer good results in just one operation but others are taken through series of treatment sessions to get the desired results.

If lucky and proper medications and processes are followed, there will be no problems of complication and these are very rare. But once happened, the patient may experience one or more of the following complications:

• Bleeding• Infection• Allergy• Presence of lump or mucus• Difficulty in swallowing• Voice may be different and sounds of alphabets may be interchanged for a time• Fistula or hole may occur in the palate

Snoring is not a problem to be neglected and should be addressed. If not, graver complications may arise and make it all the more difficult to cure. Do not let this happen. Take back the peace and quiet of the night. Good night and happy dreaming.

Cause Of Snoring:

sleep apnea

Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Snoring is the production of an unpleasant wheezing and snorting sound while sleeping. Sleep apnea, on the other hand, truly involves the stoppage of breathing within a few seconds (at least 10). You wake up to catch up with your breath again, sleep and only to again wake up for several or even a hundred times at night to start breathing all over again. But the snorer never knew about his awakenings at night. His partner is the silent witness to all the symptoms of his conditions. And this can be dead serious.

It is true that snoring is one of the most common symptoms of apnea but snoring alone does not involve cessation of breathing. Though snoring too can result to a serious sleeping disorder like apnea if not addressed during its early stages.

Obstructive sleep apnea is due to a close in some part of air passageway. It is either to a narrow airway or because the person is so obese that the fatty tissues in throat are all in the way, thus, blocking the flow of air. Others may contain some deformities within the breathing area like enlarged tonsils or tongues, growth in the neck or jaw deformities.

There are three types of sleep apnea which anyone might have. Check out if any of these three are the suspects why you snore:

• Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) – occurs on males within 30-50 years of age. This happens when the respiratory tract is blocked during sleep preventing proper breathing. This then can lead to low oxygen levels in your blood which signals the person to wake up and inhale deeply but snorting breath. Also, small mouth and tongue can contribute to the obstruction.• Central sleep apnea – this is actually brought about not by an obstructed nasal passageway but a breathing impairment caused by the malfunctioning of the brain area that controls the breathing. The damage to this part of the brain that manages breathing can be a result of a head injury or a stroke. This can also cause the brain to stop the effort the body to breathe.• Mixed sleep apnea – a combination of the first two sleep apnea evident in one person is possible but rare. This can be caused by a loss of breathing effort but with the symptoms that is the same with OSA.

Page 15: How to Get Rid of Snoring

How would you know if you are suffering from your inability to maintain good quality of sleep due to apnea, watch out for these signs:

• loud snoring and or abnormal snoring patterns with a lot pauses and gasps• excessive daytime sleepiness• inability to restore sleep• personality changes• erectile dysfunction (impotence)• decreased memory• automobile accidents• irritability and depression

Treatment for sleep apnea may vary according to your specific characteristics and circumstances. Medication may not be the effective choice of treatment for your condition but therapies are very helpful in coping sleep apnea. Some are listed below:

• Behavior Therapy – obesity or being overweight is the simplest way of reducing your apneic episodes because it can reduce the bulkiness and excessive tissue flab’s on your throat clearing your passageway. But this can be challenge for the obese because losing weight is not an easy task to do. Another way of helping you reduce the effects of sleep apnea is avoiding alcohol, sedatives and tobacco consumption because this can overly relax their muscles and avoid the closure of the passageway at night. Sleeping position and patterns may also help. Sleeping on your side can prove most comfortable for you than lying on your back because it open up the passageway clearly.

• Physical or Mechanical Therapy – the use of a process called Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) helps tremendously because of the forcible pumping of air in your nostrils, thus, keeping your airway open. This will require you to wear a snugly fit mask in your nose and the mask is attached to a pump that provides the air in your nostrils. The problems with mask are the hassles of sleeping with a mask, it is rather uncomfortable, dermal irritations because the mask rubs the face the entire night, sneezing and dry mucus membranes.

• Surgery – the procedures involved here will correct the size of your airway by invasive operations. These treatments are often your last resorts when your snoring reaches to a level that is worst.

Sleep apnea with too much snoring is very irritating and inconvenient. It hampers the normal routine in your life because of your inability to get proper sleep. If your doctor advised you to do some of the treatments available, follow it at once to save you hassles and even money.

Cause Of Snoring:

Obesity

Snoring and Obesity

Living your life carrying those extra loads of fat in your body is never an easy task. It makes it difficult for you to move even if its just small movements like picking up a garbage, walking from the grocery store to the parking lot, going down a 10-stepped stair, sweeping the floor and as simple as watering the plants. This is not the only difficulty an obese person has but carrying a host of medical problems too because of those extra pounds like diabetes, high blood pressure hypertension and so on and so forth.

It is not surprising that snoring has a linked to obesity. As the research showed, about 3,778 patients out of 4,858 has a body mass index (BMI) of 34 within the ages of 14-87 complained of snoring. A person is called obese if his BMI is 30 and above. The observations recorded three measures of snoring in obese people such as:

• snoring has a sustained loudness• peak loudness• duration

The research also showed that chronic fatigue, sleepiness and obesity are strongly related and may one or another result to snoring. History of snoring and problems with daytime sleepiness in relation to obesity and chronic fatigue recorded 80 percent which means it has close relations with the other two conditions. Problems can arise with these three factors as evident causes of snoring. With chronic fatigue, it recorded 78 percent link to the other two while obesity is closely related to the other factors with 73%

If you really want to eliminate the unpleasant sound at nights and regain a peaceful sleep, you may need to switch your lifestyle and practice clean living. Because of obesity, excessive tissues in your throat area grow and develop making it impossible for you to breathe freely. The bulkiness of your neck because of fat tissues makes your nasal airway narrower. To avoid all these difficulties, better start disciplining yourself and making your lifestyle a little bit healthier not only it can improve your sleeping habits but your physique and health condition as well.

Here are some pointers for you to keep in mind and follow:

Page 18: How to Get Rid of Snoring

• Be involved with physical and active sports like swimming, tennis and track and field. This can help strengthen your respiratory system and make your breathing smooth and free.• Start eating a well-balanced diet. Ask your dietician for assistance preferably have him prepare an effective meal plan for you. Food is very important but not overeating. You should try to balance your food, avoid eating too much of red and fatty meats. Try to have some health options for these foods as nutrients found in these meats can be found in other food that are much healthier and risk free of diseases.• Have 30 minutes to an hour of exercise either early morning or afternoon. Avoid doing it before sleeping as you may experience difficulty in sleeping.• Avoid your old ways and bad habits. If you can be successful on eliminating alcohol, smoking and other addicting habits that does not contribute to your healthy lifestyle, then you can do almost anything to be successful in eliminating your snoring problems.

Being overweight or obese can never help you make your life easier but rather full of complications and problems. Not only will not eliminate your snoring but also you will be bombarded with medical concerns. So live healthy!

Cause Of Snoring:

eating and sleeping habits

Win the Battle of Snoring by Good Eating and Sleeping Habits

If you want to put an end to your snoring, there are only two simplest but difficult things to do: acquire good and effective eating and sleeping habits.

Obesity and being overweight contributes a lot to your snoring. Excessive weight makes your breathing difficult due to fats accumulated, more effort in doing things and flabby tissues blocking your airways. It is best if you can enroll in a program where you can lose some of those pounds, tone your muscles all over your body and you will be guided with the foods you are eating. Discipline is required and your personal trainer will help you keep on track of your diet and your daily exercise regimen.

Old habits such as drinking sessions with your friends and smoking breaks should be strictly avoided, trashed and should be a part of your old life and swear never to return again. If you want to live that healthy lifestyle, forget about your bad habits and move on to the exciting world of healthy living. Overeating too is considered as a bad habit. It does not necessarily mean that if you eat anything you want, you will arrive to that desired body weight or measurements. You have to maintain a well-balanced diet. You can ask a dietician to make a meal plan for you and be educated about which food will give you the proper, complete nutrients that your body needs. It is always best to stay fit and maintain moderate eating. Discuss with your dietician some healthy food options for you especially on your strict diet.

How is your sleeping pattern? Another contributory factor to snoring is your sleeping way and patterns. Not once where you informed about the preferred sleeping position which is lying on your side instead of on your back because it will hinder the breathing process going on. Sleeping on super soft pillows is not advisable either because it strains the neck too much instead of putting the effort to breathing properly. In case you have some minor to serious problem of difficulty finding sleep, here are some tips for good nights ‘sleep:

Watch out your daytime habits:

Page 20: How to Get Rid of Snoring

• Avoid napping during the day. Napping ruins your body clock and in turn will give you a hard time sleeping at night. If you feel that you must sleep, reduce some 30 minutes on your sleep early in the day.• Reduce intake of caffeine and alcohol. Both are muscle relaxants and may cause you to go to a deep slumber but it can totally ruin your normal sleeping patterns.• Do not smoke. Smoking is a stimulant and may contribute to your difficulty in sleeping or staying asleep.• After awakening, expose yourself to direct sunlight soon to send a signal to your biological clock that it is time to wake up. When you are sleeping, be sure to close curtains or anything that may illuminate light inside your room. By doing this you can also set up the biological clock inside you and will help your body recognizes when to sleep or wake up. • Be active early in the day by performing your daily exercise regimen. Avoid doing this before going to bed because it will just stimulate you and you may find it difficult to sleep.• Monitor your iron level. Lacking iron in your body will not help you get that enough sleep you need. If you find out that lack that iron your body needs, you may ask your doctor to prescribe you an iron-rich supplement.

For better sleep environment, follow these simple instructions:

• Choose your bed wisely. Test several mattresses before buying, get therapeutic pillows and choose a comfy cotton sheet. Be sure that your bed is large and comfortable to encourage sleeping.• Your bedroom is a place for relaxing and sleeping. Never put your office or work space inside your room to avoid diversions.• Make sure to keep your sleeping space peaceful and cozy. Keep your room enticing to sleep on and make it well-ventilated for a comfy sleep.• Never put your clock to anywhere you can see it so you can concentrate sleeping, Clock can put pressure on you and most people cannot sleep because of the worries on how to sleep and what time is it that they need to sleep.

Snoring can easily be addressed with good eating and sleeping habits. Try to develop those habits and you are on your way to quieter evenings.

Cause Of Snoring:

Alcoholism

Snoring and Alcoholism

One of the most common symptoms why people snore is because of their addicting habit towards alcohol. Alcohol as a depressant allows the over relaxation of the muscles which leads a person to snore.

Drinking alcohol, aside from the other harmful effects it has, can cause too temporary condition of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is the cessation of breathing for short period of times but can get so annoying because it can happen a hundred of times in just one night. If your sleep apnea is induced by your habitual drinking and you think that it will just stop eventually, better think twice because you may be shocked that your condition worsened by just a few months times. Sleep apnea caused by alcohol has the following symptoms: extremely sluggish, shortness of breath and weariness.

Prevention is always better than the cure but if the problem is already there, you just have to face the consequences of your negligence. At first, disciplining yourself by avoiding alcohol can be very challenging, though worth it in the end. If you cannot stop right away, try drinking your bottles of liquor four hours before going to bed. This will enable your body to have that grace period it needs to adjust to the effects of the alcohol.

Alcohol can lead to nasal congestion; it also irritates the nasal airway so alcohol can be a serious threat to you and adds to the severity of your snoring. There are other symptoms of snoring and some its implications on your health.

Some of the other risk factors for snoring are:

1. Anti-histamines, sleeping pills, other sedatives and an alcohol at bedtime2. Nasal congestion that may go on for days and brought about by allergies and colds3. Swollen tonsils and adenoids that block the airway4. Overweight can contribute to the development of excess tissues near the nasal passage leaving your airways blocked.5. Last month of pregnancy, if you are pregnant, can also cause you to snore.6. Age can contribute greatly to your snoring since your muscles grow with age.

Page 22: How to Get Rid of Snoring

If you wish to stop your snoring, there are of ways and means available for you up for grabs. The only key is to put your mind to addressing your snoring problems and focus on being disciplined because without it nothing can be effective for you. You are the only one who can help yourself.

Some of the effective self-care tips that you can do to stop your snoring are as follows:

• Practice healthy living and athletic lifestyle and turn away from your old bad ways of abusing your body. This will help you develop your muscles and lose some of those extra pounds.• Do not take anti-histamines medications, tranquilizers, sleeping pills and other sedatives before going to bed because these greatly contribute to your snoring.• Four hours before retiring, avoid drinking alcohol and eating heavy meals because this can cause you to relax your muscles overly, make you sleep and snore.• Make it a habit to sleep on your side rather that your back to avoid blocking of your airways.• Recline your bed upward about four inches to aid your breathing while sleeping.

If you want to live your life away from the disturbing nights you have because of your tremendous snoring, start changing your lifestyle for the better and kiss your snoring goodbye. It is not funny as others may think but it is never hopeless too.

Rare Causes Of Snoring

Sleepless Nights due to the Rare Causes of Snoring

More than just a medical nuisance, in severe cases, snoring is also a matter of social concern. Snoring can cause you too many sleepless nights if you can no longer take the snoring of your partner. This may lead your relationship to a collapse if not addressed seriously. Aside from ruining that intimacy with your partner, it can also be a cause for a few laughs around the office or other social circles you both belong to. If you do not want all these to happen, then you must act on it now and you will be amazed at the many help and solutions available for you to grab.

About 45% of adults snore occasionally and only 25% snore regularly. There is what you call the mild snorer or the severe, chronic ones. Usually, the severe snorers are the ones who need medical attention because of the health implications that might already be present in their system that causes the snoring.

Snoring is the unpleasant sound one produces while sleeping. It can be caused by the most mundane but habitual lifestyle, bodily patterns and health complaints or simple physical deformities that hampers the free flow of air involving the nasal passageway, in the area of the nose, mouth and throat. You can refer to a list of causes below starting with the rare ones, these are the factors your may not be aware that occur which results to snoring and the most commonly known causes:

Rare Causes:

• Large tonsils and adenoids are the causes of snoring in children. These kind of causes, however, should not be ignored because some can get so large that it develops into a cyst or tumor. The presence of cysts and tumors that obstucts nasal passageways, although rare are causes too of snoring, If this happens, then it can be very severe and needs real medical attention.

• Cysts in the parts of the throat, mouth (called lingual cyst) and nose are sure causes of loud and heavy snoring.• Snoring is one of the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. However, it is also true that ordinary snoring can lead to sleep apnea. This happens when at the middle of night, in between your loud snoring comes a period when you stop your breathing for at least 10 seconds. The episodes can happen from 30 to 300 times a night.

Page 24: How to Get Rid of Snoring

Other causes includes:

• Heredity – certain features you possess may come from either sides of your family including a narrow throat which can cause the snoring.

• Age – is a major factor why people snore because throat can narrow in the course of time and it reduces too the muscle tone in your throat when you reached middle-age or more.

• Gender – there are more chances for males to snore because they have narrow air passages than females.

• Smoking and exposure to others smoking – due to this addicting habit, the nasal and lung congest, thus, blocking the airway aside from relaxing the muscles too.

• Overweight – excess fats in some areas can result to pressure in some parts of the body like the neck; if the neck is heavy due to fatty tissues, this may lead to smaller throat which causes the snoring.

• Bad habits (alcohol, sleeping pills and anti-histamine consumptions) – consumption of these substances cause the above normal relaxation of the tongue and throat muscles which makes you snore.

• Lack of fitness – muscle toning is very important and exercise can only be the answer to this without it, muscle will be lax that contributes to that unpleasant sounds at night.

• Sleeping position – the advisable sleeping position is sleeping on your sides rather than your backs because the flesh of your throat blocks the airway that leads to snores.

• Sleeping habits – avoid using ultra soft pillows when sleeping because the angle of the neck then increases which contributes to the blocking of airways, thus, making you snore.

• Allergies and other regular health complaints – this contributes to nasal airway blockage that result to difficulty in inhalation, when this happens, it will create a vacuum in your throat and make your breathing noisy.

• Physical but unseen deformities – nasal deformities contribute greatly to snoring because it will not allow you to breathe properly, example of which is having a deviated septum.

Page 25: How to Get Rid of Snoring

• Swollen adenoids and tonsils – these are also contributors to obstructing your airways and it also added some vibrations to your breathing.

If your partners has one or more of these habits and deformities and you feel that your snoring is getting worse every time, it would be best to consult your physician and ask for medical assistance.

When Do You Need Medical Help

Snoring: When to know if you need help?

As a partner of someone who snores, it is most likely that you alone can inform, encourage and motivate him to do something about his snoring. Most snorers are not aware that they snore much more to evaluate the severity of his condition. It is very important to make this known to him because of the health risks that severe snoring may lead to like diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, heart diseases, hypertension and worst premature death.

Medical assistance will benefit both of you as well. For the snorer, he will regain the benefits of a good sleep and for you as his partner you will have more quiet nights and you will also regain the intimacy in your relationship. Your times of sleeping separately are now over.

Treatment for snoring is easily available in the market with over 300 patented products and devices to aid snorers ranging from sprays, nasal strips, tablets and masks. In severe cases, it is very important to consult a physician to avoid further damage to your health. The physician or the ear, nose, throat or ENT specialist will check on you and do the following steps before diagnosis:

• examine the areas affected and that causes snoring – nose, throat, mouth, neck and palate• monitor if there is any underlying health conditions

• the physician may endorsed you to a sleep clinic where you can be observed – your sleeping patterns and habits and diagnose your snoring condition.

• assist and give solution to your snoring.

If your diagnosed as a slight snorer, the ENT specialist will recommend some changes in your habits and lifestyle practices such as reducing if not totally avoiding alcohol and sleeping pills consumption, losing weight and changing your sleeping habits and patterns. But if these changes do not arrived in your desired result, the physician will go to higher level of treatment. He may suggest the following:

• Use of oral appliances. These devices are dental mouthpieces that are form-fitting and aids in tongue and soft palate to advance theirs positions. This will help in keeping the air passage open.

• Surgery. These are invasive procedures that alter your palate, nasal and throat tissues to help you in your breathing and avoid obstruction which causes snoring.

Page 27: How to Get Rid of Snoring

• Laser surgery. This is a much lesser invasive procedure of shortening your soft palate and removing your uvula in order to enlarge your airway and decrease the vibration going on while you sleep.

• Somnoplasty procedure is the use of low-intensity radio frequency signal to alter and reduce the size of the soft palate that may reduce the snoring episodes.

• Pressurized masks can also be used while you are sleeping. It is design to cover your nice while sleeping. A small pump is attached to the mask which pumps air to your airway forcibly and keeps it open. This is a preferred way of treating a much severe case of snoring but most find it so uncomfortable being attached to them why they sleep.

In case you want a peaceful life with your partner, help him solve his snoring problem and assist him to a better sleep at night. Seek medical help right away for be on your way to more quiet nights.

Treatments Available In Snoring

Snoring Treatments

Is snoring making your life so miserable? Does it ruin your relationship with your wife or partner? If you answer yes, then your snoring must be chronic and need

Page 28: How to Get Rid of Snoring

assistance from specialists. Snoring is the very reason why 80% of couples sleep in separate rooms. And this is not a good recipe for a relationship.

Snoring happens when air is blocked in your nasal passage and the breathing process is not completed well and an unpleasant sound of snorting or wheezing while breathing takes place. If not addressed, snoring can be both socially and life threatening. Imagine being the laughing stock in social gatherings and functions and worst becoming a victim of an untimely death. Why die of something that can be cured if you could have done something about it earlier. Snoring can be mild or severe. For mild snorers, by simply waking up in the middle of the night and turning over to another position is enough to discontinue the snoring. While chronic snoring can be treated by the help of a specialized doctor like an ENT.

Diagnosis is first done by your ENT and then he recommends you to go to a sleep clinic and stay overnight so an assistant can take note of your sleeping habits and patterns. Treatment can be as simple as changing your lifestyle and sleeping practices or it can be worst like undergoing a surgical operation. But you first have to know the severity of your case. The changes in lifestyle alone may help your condition if you maintain monitoring, or because it can be hard if you do it yourself, ask someone, a partner sleeping with you to record your sleeping habits for you. To know more about some self-help tips to alleviate the nuisances of snoring, read on and find out the most effective ones for you:

• Live a healthy lifestyle and maintain your weight. If you maintain your weight, there will be no development of fatty tissues to obstruct your air passageway. Exercise and balanced diet can increase your capacity of breathing properly and freely why you sleep.

• Sleeping position and habits. The preferred sleeping position is on your side rather than on your back. The tendency of lying on your back is shortness of breath due to the flesh of your throat dangling on the airway.

Make it a habit to sleep on your side by doing the ball trick or putting some towels behind your mattress. Specially-designed pillows to aid breathing can also help and it is commercially available.

The ball trick can be done by sewing a pocket or sock on your pajama top and put a ball, the size of tennis ball, inside it. This proves to be uncomfortable for the snorer if he attempts to lie on his back so the tendency is for him to sleep sideways instead. Later on, it will become a habit without putting on the ball.

Try to sleep without the ordinary pillow, aside from straining your neck, it can also contribute to a blocked air passageway. Instead of using a pillow why not recline the head of your bed at four inches. In this way you can make your breathing

Page 29: How to Get Rid of Snoring

easier and better and it can also help in advancing the position of your jaw and tongue. If your bed does not recline, you can use folded towels behind the mattress to elevate your head.

• As much as possible, reduce, if not totally stop, your smoking, and or your exposure to secondhand smoke because either of these can cause nasal and lung congestion leading to difficulty in breathing and eventually snoring.

• Never eat heavy meals or drink alcohol before going to sleep. These habits can contribute to the relaxation of muscles that always make you snore. If you cannot stop drinking drastically, then make it a habit to drink four hours before bed time for the body to adjust and reduce the effects of alcohol.

• Do not stuff yourself with soy milk or high fat dairy milk products because either of these can cause the thickening of your mucus that makes it more difficult to drain, thus, contributes to your snoring.

• If you suffer from allergies and stuffy nose, avoid taking antihistamines because this can relax your muscles, thus, leading you to snore.

• Use nasal decongestants to clear your air passageways.

• Sleeping pills and sedatives too have this relaxing effect to your muscles especially to your neck. This can lead to your snoring heavily.

• A process called Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) helps alleviate the snoring by using a device with a mask attached to a pressure pump that forces to pump air into your passageway leaving it open.

Treatments are easily accessible if you really have the will power to remove your snoring habits. By understanding that snoring is more than just a medical concern but also social can give you the boost to address your snoring and regain your quiet nights back with your loved one.

Medicines

Snoring Medicines

Over 300 patented products ranging from medicines, oral appliances and devices for nasal congestion and snoring are up for grabs in the market. Though these are

Page 31: How to Get Rid of Snoring

all patented, not all promise good results. You may be wasting so much of your money without the expected results you are hoping to get.

It is always best to be guided by the professional. Seek the advice of your ear, nose, throat specialist or otolaryngologist for proper medication and this will only depend on the diagnosis of your doctor. Mild snoring only requires self-help solutions but chronic snoring may need more advanced procedures involving surgery. Solution does not come in by just letting yourself undergo one solution or treatment. You may need a series of sessions and combination of treatments available for snoring.

Here are some of the treatments you may access in the market and in your nearest physician:

1. Medicines• Chewable tablets – this medication is only effective for the mild snorer and those under 180 lbs in weight. For children over the age of five, they can suck or chew the tablet while they are lying on the bed. If there is a recorded improvement, kids can already start using it every night until they no longer needed it. In case adults of more than 180 lbs want to try its affectivity, they can chew 1 tablet 30 minutes before bedtime and again at bedtime. If improvement is noticed, adults can begin to make it their daily evening habit. Available in the market at $10.34.

• Sprays and doses – there are products in the market like these sprays can give snorers fast relief and sometimes with bonus to those who have respiratory allergies. Some are sprayed directly in the mouth or through the nostrils. When sprayed in the mouth, three pumps are required to complete one dose and this should be repeated 4-6 times daily until some improvement is evident. For adults, they are required three complete pump sprays. For children ages 2-12 years old, they need two complete pumps and newborns, 1-2 years old, only one complete spray. You can buy it at $5-$10.00.

2. Oral appliances and devices• Nasal strips. If you notice the white, adhesive strips attached to the noses of some athletes, this is what you call nasal strips. This is anything but fashion instead it is used for easy breathing and relief from nasal congestion due to allergies and colds. The strip holds the nose in place to increase the nasal airways. Both sides of the strip are flexible and spring-like which allows the adhesive hold the nose in place. This is applicable for those with average or above-average nose size. Warning: never use the strip for more than 12 hours and you can be prone to skin rashes since the strip is made up of natural rubber latex. Available in drugstores for $4.49.

Page 32: How to Get Rid of Snoring

• Dental devices. These are some form-fitting mouthpieces that allow to position the tongue and soft palate forward. This helps keep the nasal passages open. If you opt to use these devices, you are required to visit your dental specialist at least once every six months in the first year of use and after that at least annually so he can check the fit and whether your condition is improving or worsening.

Medicines and treatments are easily accessible in the market. One suggestion though is to maintain professional guidance from your specialist to acquire the proper medication for you.

Snoring Treatment:

allergy triggers

Snoring and Allergy

The relationship between snoring and allergy is most evident to kids who snore. Twenty-one and five percent (21.5%) of children who are sensitive to triggers in

Page 33: How to Get Rid of Snoring

their allergies have increased chances of snoring early on. Same with children who have atopy, allergy to pollen, dander venoms, food and others and an earlier sign of developing asthma and allergies, they are twice more likely to snore than those who are not affected by this condition.

Most of the time, if kids snore they have a very high tendency to be diagnosed with respiratory diseases that are caused by allergies. If the disease has been treated and the child grows up but still snores then maybe this is a case of behavioral difficulties, metabolic and heart diseases or mental impairment.

Snoring triggered by allergies to items such as household cleaners, feather pillows, pet hair and house dust mites can also lead to the snoring. Allergies of this sort can result to the swelling of the lining of the nose and throat, thus, prevents you to breathing properly which can contribute to snoring.

One allergy that triggers snoring is Asthma. If Asthma is controlled well, then snoring is not a problem and can be easily managed. In case you attempted to treat the snoring and it worked well, then you can make your Asthma manageable and in need of fewer medications. Since both are related, responding to either problems - Asthma and snoring - can give relief to the patient.

Another allergy that easily triggers snoring is the food allergy. It can cause you sleepless nights because of your increased snoring, fatigue and muscle and joint pain. Why it triggers snoring? Because oftentimes, food allergy causes too much sniffing and sneezing, paving the way to a congested nasal passageway. This obstructs your breathing, thus, causing you to snore heavily.

It is very important that you are knowledgeable of the type of allergy that struck you because you will be able to treat it effectively. There are three specific allergies that causes nasal congestion and thus leads to snoring. First, seasonal hay fever that can be triggered by grasses and pollens. This is often experienced during springtime. Common symptoms are sneezing, blocked nose, itchiness and sneezing.

Second type of allergy that causes you sleepless and disturbing nights is the perennial allergies you get from dust mites and moulds. It can make you itchy, produce red, watery eyes and cause itchiness in your palate as well. What is most uncomfortable in this type of allergy is the fact that it can be experienced all year round. One way of avoiding these allergies to trigger is to reduce your exposure to the allergens that cause it so there would be no complications that may arise.

Allergy and alcohol are also a tandem in causing you to snore. Alcohol is one of the factors that can develop allergies. If alcohol is present in your system, you

Page 34: How to Get Rid of Snoring

have higher levels of antibodies and it may interfere with the functions of your immune system.

Sinus congestion, like nasal congestion, is one of the effects of chronic allergies. If both of these congestions are prevalent, difficulties in breathing will be very evident, especially during nightime. In one of the researches made, findings revealed that lying on your back can increase nasal congestion. This means low quality of sleep since congestion can lead to sleep disorder related to breathing and snoring.

For many, snoring seems to be just a light matter and does not care if it continues. They think that it is just a normal part of life until they feel the ridicule or health effects of snoring. The extent of damage it can give to light snorers is sleep deprivation. On the other hand, the severe snorer can experience complicated medical problems that even lead to premature death. Sleep deprivation can result to:

• decreased productivity• unclear thinking• slow reaction time• low energy • negative mood• daytime sleepiness• lack of smooth functioning of the body• poor mental and emotional health • a compromised immune system and slower healing

Chronic snoring can further lead to:

• stroke• hypertension• heart disease• type 2 diabetes• high blood pressure• premature death

If you are wise enough, you will address the issue of snoring early on so you would not have much difficulty dealing with the complications both medical and social. Snoring can be a point for embarrassment and ridicule. Why wait for that time to happen when you can do something about it within your capacity, here is how:

• Sleep on your side. Sleeping on your back will put more effort in your breathing because the tongue is freer to fall backward near your throat causing it

Page 35: How to Get Rid of Snoring

to partially block the airways obstructing the flow of air. To make it your habit to sleep on your side, try the tennis ball trick. This requires you to sew a pocket or pin a sock on the back of your pajama top and put the ball inside. This is very uncomfortable if you lie on your back so you will then be forced to sleep on your side until it becomes a habit without the ball.

• Use nasal strip. Nasal strips are the adhesive tapes you see attached to the noses of some athletes during footballs and other active ball sports because they aid you to breathe well. This increases the areas of the nasal passageway, thus, improving the breathing process.

• Treat nasal congestion and obstruction. Congestion causes difficulty in breathing due to the narrowed airways in your nose. For properly addressing this health concern, see your doctor and unless he prescribes you with an oral medicine or spray, do not attempt to use them especially if there is acute congestion three days in a row. For severe congestion, try consulting your doctor about the use of a steroid spray. In case you have a deviated septum which indeed causes your congestion, you may need to undergo a surgery to correct it.

• Reduce or avoid alcohol, sedatives and anti-histamines. The only compromise you have in addressing your alcohol consumption is to avoid drinking it four to six hours before bedtime. This allows the body to adjust to the effects of alcohol. For sedatives, always bring up the issue of your snoring if you want your doctor to prescribe you the correct medication for your sleep disorder. Both alcohol and sedatives can cause the excessive relaxation of your muscles that in turn leads to snoring. Same as your allergies, if this is causes your congestion, tell the doctor about it so he will not prescribe you with an anti-histamine medicine.

Snoring, whatever its causes, need to be treated early on. It is best if you can address the problems with your allergy first or your child’s before treating the snoring problem.

surgical procedures

Surgical Procedure to Cure Snoring

If your physician recommends that you undergo a operation to treat your snoring, then this only means one thing: your snoring already gets out of hand and simple self help cures cannot work anymore. Surgery is considered to be a last resort to any types of diseases when all else did not work out. One hesitancy of doctors towards surgery is its invasiveness. It requires alteration and changes in your bodily make up to help you get better but not without risks of complications and side effects.

Before undergoing a surgery especially the palatal surgery, you have to be sure that your specialist address all your snoring concerns including the causes of your

Page 37: How to Get Rid of Snoring

snoring. If your snoring originates from the base of the tongue then a palatal surgery will definitely not answer your problem because it does not address the right problem. Nasal abnormalities too should be treated first before you can undergo any surgery.

After responding to all that are needed to be done and still have to undergo the surgical process, here are the four major but basic procedures you may can use depending on your physicians advice:

1. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) – in this process, your uvula (the tissue that hangs at the back of your mouth), pharynx and soft palate is removed in the operation to clear your air passageways. Your tonsils and adenoids are removed also. This is only recommended to select patients with severe cases. Be warned that the post-operative pain is very high.

2. Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) – is a process that requires series of treatments before the desired effects can be achieved. Using laser, the uvula and extra edge of the soft palate is vaporized. It more practical and safer option than UPPP but the pain after the operation is equally high as the UPPP that makes it difficult for the patients to comply. Since LAUP only delivers the desired effects after several sessions, patients may not follow and go again to the sessions left because of the pain. Even after the treatments, only 55% were recorded to be happy with the results.

3. Electrical Cautery or CAPSO – the process involves the burning of the palate that causes the stiffening of the soft palate and fibrosis. It is also used to get rid of the strip of mucosa along the uvula. The operation is minor and very quick that the patient can go afterwards. It is less invasive than the first two procedures but same pain, as the first two surgeries, can be felt. CAPSO can also be repeated until the desired effects are evident.

4. Somnoplasty or radio frequency ablation – it is the use of the radio waves to destroy the small parts of tissues of the soft palate. This procedure involves heating the tissue that results to a scarred tissue beneath the skin. It only takes 20 minutes to do the procedure and the patient can go home afterwards. There are fewer complications compared to other surgeries and definitely less invasive. Treatment comes in sessions to reach the desired result. But in a report, only 33% or 7 out of 11 patients manifested success and the obese cannot undergo the operation because it does not work for him.

Snoring, like any other simple disorders, can be resolved if you addressed the issue in its early stages. Why would you want to go for the last resort for the solution to your snoring problems? Act now.

eating and sleeping habit modification

Behavior Modification for Snoring

Please let us get some sleep. We love you, oh people in our lives who snore, but we just can't get any rest in the same room with you. Okay, that little appeal made and out of the way, let's get down to the main topic. Behavioral modification to stop snoring.

There are a ton of solutions to stop snoring, the most uncomfortable being tracheosectomy. This is a surgical procedure where a surgeon cuts open a temporary breathing passage in someone's air pipes so they don't snore. Temporary in the sense that eventually the parts of a person's throat and nose that cause snoring will become unclogged and allow for quiet breathing, at which point the doctor will patch the hole up. Ouch.

While effective, tracheosectomy is definitely not very popular. Small wonder there. Thankfully however, it was replaced by a method called CPAP, or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. This form of therapy involves the snorer using a mask with inserts to keep the airflow in the nasal passages open and unobstructed.

Page 39: How to Get Rid of Snoring

Eventually, the mask becomes no longer necessary when the nasal passages physically adjust over time to the size set by the mask inserts. While not as unpleasant as having holes cut open in you, putting on a mask and having things attached to the mask stuffed up your nose is still not a very pleasant way to spend a night, is it?

Which leads to modern behavioral modification methods. Altering your sleeping and eating habits can, by itself, actually be enough to get rid of snoring in all but the worst cases where a person's snoring is caused by a medical condition, like having sinusitis for example. Just making a few changes in your daily habit can get rid of snoring without having to resort to funky shaped pillows, goggle-type anti snoring masks, awful tasting pills, funny smelling oils, or sharp, pointy scalpels.

Getting enough exercise, drinking plenty of water, and losing weight cuts back on the chances of snoring drastically. Studies have shown that a large percentage of people who snore are overweight, don't get enough exercise, and eat mostly junk food and beer. Yes hubby dear, I'm talking to you. You don't need to go to a gym to become an ultra fit paragon of muscularity. Getting in shape by even the simple expedient of jogging is enough to help with snoring, because cardio-vascular exercises help the body keep it's air flow more efficient, which extends to how you breathe when you sleep.

Smoking has also been known to cause a build up of phlegm in the throat, which of course naturally contributes to the funny noises made when you snore. The snoring is bad enough, but when you throw in the semi-hacking sound made by a smoker's rasp with it, it can be a pain to hear. Again, getting rid of your cigarettes will also help you breath easier, keeping your lungs clean and your air passages unobstructed so that you won't wind up opening your mouth when you sleep and snoring enough to shatter your neighbor's windowpanes.

Lastly, getting enough sleep and sleeping on time are both major contributors to helping with snoring. Staying up late at odd hours leads to exhaustion when you finally do manage to get into bed, and tired people snore because their bodies need more oxygen. Humans may be one of the most adaptable species on the planet, but we're not nocturnal. Getting to bed before midnight and getting at least 6, preferably a full 8 hours of sleep will also help to kick snoring out.

Following these simple steps will help almost anyone who snores get rid of it. It's a good idea to follow them, too, before your loved ones break out the scalpels or pick up a mallet in the middle of the night...

Snoring Treatment:

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)

Stop Snoring Without Surgery

Okay, as far as light sleepers like me are concerned, one of the little categorizations we make in the world is between snorers and quiet sleepers. Not to disparage snorers, it's not their fault they snore, but trying to get any amount of decent sleep when your bed partner buzzes like a world war 2 machine gun is next to impossible.

Surgery is a drastic solution to this, but an effective one. However, recent medical studies have analyzed the causes of snoring, and have found effective ways to cure someone of chronic snoring without having to resort to surgery. One of the most effective of these methods is CPAP, or Continuous Positive Air Pressure.

Snoring is caused by blockages in the nose and throat that make a person breath through their mouth, and thus the snoring sound is produced by reverberations of air in the back of the nose and throat. CPAP treatment uses a mask called a Nasal CPAP to provide a continuous flow of air through the nasal passage to remove snoring.

The mask itself does not force air into or out of the lungs; all it does is keep the air passages free and unobstructed with special inserts made of soft materials that won't feel uncomfotable so the snorer doesn't have to worry about having trouble sleeping because of the mask. Tightening in the aforementioned air passages are what cause the noise made when people snore, so keeping the passages

Page 41: How to Get Rid of Snoring

unclogged is the key to how the Nasal CPAP works. The Nasal CPAP is not meant to be kept on forever, however. It will eventually allow the body to adjust it's air passages to function normally.

Therapists have to be consulted if CPAP is appropriate for a snorer. If found applicable, the mask will have to be worn every night until eventually the air passages adjust physically enough to allow for normal breathing during sleep. Therapists also recommend other changes to lifestyle during this period of therapy, including getting more exercise, losing weight, and stopping smoking.

In the event that the patient doesn't comply with these additional measures, the treatment takes longer and the mask stays on longer as well. Of course, keeping the mask on every night for the rest of your life is also an option for those who remain recalcitrant regarding the lifestyle changes.

Before the development of CPAP, the surgical procedure taken to prevent snoring was tracheosectomy, which involved cutting a temporary alternate air passage in a person's windpipe to allow breathing without needing to run air through the parts of the air passage which causes snoring. Thankfully, studies have shown that CPAP is every bit as effective as this old procedure, so snorers nedd not worry that their family and friends will send them to the doctor to go under the knife.

CPAP has been proven effective in every case studied, and there are no known side effects to the use of a CPAP mask while undergoing treatment. The body adjusts naturally to the mask's changes to the air passages, allowing normal air flow once the treatment period is successful. Additionally, the life style changes recommended while undergoing CPAP treatment are beneficial on a cardio vascular level, so going through CPAP not only removes snoring, it makes the patients healthier as well.

lifestyle changes versus surgery

Sweat or the Scalpel: Snoring Solutions to Choose From

Okay, nobody likes being in the same room with a snorer when they're trying to get a decent night's sleep. It can be pretty unpleasant to be right on the edge of slumber land when you suddenly get jarred awake with a snore loud enough to set your very bones and teeth vibrating.

There are lots of solutions to snoring, and some of them are as funny as the proverbial hiccup cure. Pills to cure snoring, herbal therapy, strange looking masks and pillows, even chin straps and mouth plugs. While seemingly comical, these devices show that people consider snoring serious enough to try and come up with solutions to it, no matter how seemingly absurd, in the quest to try and get a decent night's sleep.

While some of these solutions have proven effective for some people, they are by no means foolproof. The only two real solutions to snoring that have proven 100 percent effective are at extreme ends of the scale in terms of approach. One is a lifestyle change that requires perseverance on the part of the snorer, and the other an external solution, namely corrective surgery.

The lifestyle change involves the standard demographic of snorers. Surveys have shown that a lot of snorers tend to be overweight, athletically deficient, and smokers. There are several factors brought about by these points which cause snoring.

For one thing, overweight people usually have cardiovascular problems. During sleep, the body's breathing pattern changes, becoming more irregular in rhythm

Page 43: How to Get Rid of Snoring

and deeper, with inhalations taken into the diaphragm instead of just the chest. This increased oxygen intake takes its toll on an overweight person's respiratory system, and the nasal and throat air passages tend to seize up as a result to try and stem the sudden flow of oxygen. This constriction leads to a reverberation in the tightened passages and forms snoring. Going on a diet is one of the solutions to this problem.

As far as exercise is concerned, cardio vascular exercises like calisthenics and jogging are the ones that can most readily deal with snoring, since the body will likewise become used to dealing with large quantities of oxygen at a time. On another note, cigarettes have a twofold effect that causes snoring. As most people have heard, smoking weakens a person's lungs, thus leading to snoring through a weakening of the cardiovascular system similar to that experienced by people who are overweight and unfit. Additionally however, smoking also causes phlegm buildups in a person's air passages. This phlegm usually clogs people's nasal passages when they sleep, forcing their mouths open and also rattles when breathing, which causes it's own form of snoring. Quitting smoking is the solution to this type of snoring.

Surgery is the other option to be taken for snorers who are either unwilling or unable to exercise, lose weight, and quit smoking. Though a process called tracheosectomy, a small hole is cut in the air passages of the snorer to facilitate breathing without the air having to pass through the nasal and throat areas which vibrate to cause the noise of snoring.

This is not a permanent thing, however. The hole made through tracheosectomy is meant to be a form of therapy, where the body is allowed to adjust over a period of time to the air intake required by the body during sleep. Over time, the nasal and throat portions which seize up during sleep and cause snoring will adjust as the body does, and will no longer choke off reflexively. At this point, the doctor can patch the hole up and the patient can go back to sleeping normally without having to worry about snoring.

Stuff to Help You Snooze Quietly

Snoring doesn't really bother anyone. At least, it doesn't bother the snorers. But speaking from personal experience as a very light sleeper and sometime insomniac, I can honestly say it irritates the living (insert expletive of choice here) out of me when my girlfriend, relatives, or friends snore. Trying to get a little bit of decent sleep and suddenly being jarred awake right before you drift off by a snore that is more akin to a chainsaw being run through the side of a steel drum is a decidedly unpleasant experience.

Having attempted to smother several friends to death with pillows and broken up with a girl over her snoring (yes girls, some of you DO snore!) may seem a bit funny to some, but it actually reflects on how chronic snoring can totally ruin an otherwise blissful and beautiful relationship. Thankfully, there ARE a few gimmicks out there that actually work when it comes to suppressing snoring. For those of you who know where I'm coming from, here are a few handy gadgets and medicines that you'll probably want to give to your friends, partner, or family members to help keep you from doing drastic things in the middle of the night...

Anti Snoring Pillows - NO these don’t work. Clinical tests showed that claims made by manufacturers that these work are false. I just thought I'd get that out of the way first so you don't wind up buying a fancy pillow that doesn't work at all, and end up strangling someone with it instead.

Nasal Strips and Dilators - YES these work, about 75% of the time. It helps ease breathing through a person's nose instead of his/her mouth. A lot of snorers breathe through the mouth (thus snoring) when they sleep because their nasal passages are too congested to handle the kind of deep, even breathing that comes

with sleep. The other 25% just plain habitually have their mouths drop open when they snooze. This won't help them.

Inhalers and Throat Sprays - for the other 25%, throat sprays decongests their throats and relax the muscles in it so it doesn't reverberate when they breath through it. While they will still breathe though their mouths, it won't come out a snore. More a gentle whooshing sound. Not so bad, but it doesn't work on everyone and this may require them to see a doctor to make sure they're not allergic to any of it's ingredients.

Tablets - this is a 50-50 in terms of effectiveness. Some people claim it works and others don't. Depends on the brand, and even then some brands just absolutely won't work for one person while it will act like a charm for another. However, since some of these tablets DO work, it's an option to look into if you plan on getting a good night's sleep.

Herbal Aromatherapy - amazingly enough, these work great. Clearing nasal passages and helping a person's respiratory system function more effectively, these natural herbal solutions also relax a person enough that they won't snore and will sleep soundly at the same time. The only drawback is that the proven ones are more expensive than the other types of solutions given above. Still, it's worth the cost unless you like sleeping on the couch a lot.

Shotguns - just kidding... sort of...

Snoring Conclusion

Equipping Oneself With Helpful Information on Snoring

Snoring may not really be a new term for anyone. It is such a common condition that as soon as one hears the sound of it, one does not worry anymore and simply label it as such. However, looking closely at the condition, it is not as simple as it seems. Thus, it is important that one is equipped with some helpful information that will eventually lead to becoming free of it.

Snoring is a condition that occurs during sleep and is accompanied by unusual sounds which may range from a toned down sound to a really disturbing noise. Blockages in the air passageway normally cause this phenomenon.

No one is exempted from the possibility of snoring. Anyone can be at risk. What makes this condition even more difficult is the fact that it is hard to detect since the snorer is often not conscious of it.

Some people, however, are more prone to experiencing this condition. Since the causes mostly have to do with structures like mouth, throat, palate, and uvula, people who have been born with deformities in any of these are more likely to be snoring at night. For example, those who have longer palates and uvula will suffer from stronger fluctuations at the backside of the mouth during sleep since these two structures bump into each other.

On the other hand, certain structural problems may be caused by potentially controllable factors. Obesity falls under this category. Obese people have bulkier throat muscles that narrow down the air passageway. For this particular type,

losing weight or monitoring one’s diet is the best remedy. Studies show that snoring among children is oftentimes due to being overweight. Thus, parents are advised to develop positive eating habits in children early on.

Moreover, the quality of the throat muscles may have an effect on snoring. Muscles that relax easily tend to collapse during sleep which, again, becomes a breathing impediment leading to snoring. Medications that are too relaxing like those which help one sleep well and alcohol must then be taken in moderation.

There are still many other possible causes which must be observed and controlled the soonest possible time. Certain genetic considerations are also being pointed out but accurate information on this is not yet available.

There are several options available when it comes to treatment but it normally depends on what the causes are. If it is generally structural in nature, surgery is often advised.

On the other hand, for those who are not willing to undergo surgery, there are certain remedies in the market which promise to bring in similar results if given enough effort. One is called Continuous Positive Airway Pressure which brings in compressed air with the aid of a mask and machine to keep the air passageway open. It can be quite uncomfortable since the mask has to be worn every night but it has been proven to be effective. Other variations are in the form of nasal strips and humidifiers which are equally beneficial.

Changes in lifestyle and habits are also very helpful since some of the causes are just acquired. Controlling one’s diet or alcohol intake is one. Also, developing regular sleeping habits have been observed to be very favorable.

Although snoring in itself is not life-threatening, it must be given attention as it may lead to other disorders like sleep apnea. The help of an expert must be sought as soon as there are observable symptoms.
