WHAT IS RENEWABLE ENERGY?

RENEWABLE ELECTRICITYSolar Photovoltaic Electricity Systems (PV)
•Energy from the sun that is converted into electricity (photovoltaic effect).•On the roof, integrated into the façade or the windowsIt will work best if:•your site is free from shading by trees, nearby buildings, or other obstructions•your roof or property contain a large enough area for it
Wind energy•Energy from the wind that is converted into electricity thanks to wind turbines (less than 1MW)In an area adjacent your hotel.It will work if:•your hotel is placed in a windy area•your hotel is on a property big enough to host a wind turbine
RENEWABLE HOT WATERSolar Thermal Domestic Hot Water Systems •Energy from the sun that warms water for domestic uses through solar thermal collectors•On the roof, integrated into the façade or other suitable surfaces + hot water tank storageIt will work if:•your site is free from shading by trees, nearby buildings, or other obstructions•your roof or property contain a large enough area for it•you have a suitable space for storing the hot water tank
Swimming PoolsEnergy from the sun or from the earth that warms swimming pools’ water through solar thermal collectors or geothermal heat pumpsSame conditions as for solar thermal collectors and geothermal heat pumpsIt will work if:•Your site (i.e. roof or ground area) has unshaded East or south‐facing areas (solar thermal collectors)•surface of ground available for the exchangers (geothermal heat pumps)
RENEWABLE HEATING (AND HOT WATER)
Biomass (wood chips and wood pellets)•Energy from biomass (wood chips or wood pellets) that is burnt and used for space heating or for warming water for domestic uses• boiler + biomass storage places
It will work if:•you have a suitable space for storing wood chips/pellets•Your hotel has a chimney to connect the biomass system to
RENEWABLE HEATING AND COOLINGGeothermal energy (Ground Source Heat Pumps)•Energy from the earth that is used for space heating or cooling through a heat pump• place where to store the heat pump (no bigger than the one required for a conventional boiler)
It will work best if:•Your hotel is well insulated•Your hotel has an adjacent area big/deep enough to install horizontal or vertical collectors•Your hotel has a suitable power supply that fits the heat pumps requirements
COMBINED SYSTEMSCombined Heat and Power (co‐generation)To produce heat and electricity simultaneously.It is suited to your hotel if it has:•Simultaneous base load requirement for electricity and heat•Suitable fuel supply (preferably biofuels)•Suitable access and space for the micro CHP unit •Suitable location with respect to other site functions (e.g. noise and exhaust) •Fuel and electricity consumption records available on a monthly or more frequent basis
Combi SystemsTo produce heating anddomestic hot water at the same time.It will work best if:• Your hotel is located in a high solar radiation
area• You have a big demand for space heating
