This is a presentation I gave journalism, public relations, event management and advertising students on their first day at University College Falmouth. As somebody who recently left the journalism course, the short presentation was designed to offer simple tips and advice about how to get the most from the town, their uni and their studies.TRANSCRIPT

papers, radio stations, PR agencies. • Graduated last June ’09. Worked over freshers ’09. Started Small

Tips for getting the most out of your course.
• Be organised; meet deadlines.• Little things make a big difference.• Make sure you know what’s being asked of
you. • If unsure, ask.• Refer everything to yourself.
How to get the most out of your time at UCF
• Change brings about opportunity.• Make use of the facilities. • Do what you’re good at.• Opportunities: Flex, Radio Wave, Source FM…• Ask yourself “Why not?”
Tips for getting ahead of the competition
• Read as widely as you can – ex. RSS feeds, library. • Engage via twitter, facebook, LinkedIn• Wordpress and Blogger – ex. Dave Lee and Josh Halliday• Posterous and Tumblr – personal scrapbooks. • Write about your interests. • Publish your CV as a PDF• Manage your personal brand –Employers will check. • Don’t panic. • Ask questions.
Tips for gaining work experience: • Sign up with Unlocking Cornish Potential. • Get to know the careers advisor. • Bigger doesn’t always mean better. • Have set goals and aims. • Make sure there are clear boundaries in place.• Keep in touch when you leave.
