Southend and Westcliff Jewish Community Centre has anew and exciting programme this term. In the heart of theJewish community, we offer many activities, which can bepersonalised to your interests and needs. This programmebooklet gives an overview of what’s on at the centre, fromgentle exercise classes, arts and crafts, discussion groupsto themed events, support services, trips and connect@.

Our friendly staff and dedicated volunteers will makeeveryone feel welcomed in an enjoyable and relaxedatmosphere. The centre also offers many essential servicesincluding transport, hairdressing, manicures, a kosher shopand our kosher style café. Kosher shopOur mini shop is available at your conveniencefor you to purchase all your essentials. Westock a range of kosher food and householdessentials such as Shabbat and memorialcandles, simcha cards, and more.Open 9am-3pm

Shabbat experienceJoin us every Friday for our Shabbatexperience lunch, challah and blessings foronly £7. This includes a 2-course chickenkneidlach soup and a roast chicken lunch plusall the centres activities. Transport is availableat a cost of £1.50 each way (see page 5).

Shebson Lodge offers independentsheltered living accommodation aboveSouthend and Westcliff Jewish CommunityCentre.

It boasts 16 spacious flats ranging from astudio apartment, 1 bedroom or 2bedrooms, all fitted with a kitchen,bathroom and lounge. The majority of flats

offer bright sea views over the Thamesestuary.

The accommodation offers a uniqueopportunity for members of the communityaged 60+, to live independently but with thecomfort of knowing a warden is on siteovernight and the support of a 24 hourhelpline if needed.

There is an added security of being part ofthe community centre below. The helpfulstaff are on hand to respond to needs ofthe tenants and encourage them to takepart in day centre activities and join themfor lunch in the cafe.

Tenants can join the day centre below at adiscounted entry rate. Offering directaccess to the facilities, activities andshopping trips on offer on the ground floor,and a chance to remain active and socialisewith friends. There is a kosher shop for dailyessentials and a cafe for you to enjoy lunchwith family and friends.

Support servicesThe centre has a new community liaisonworker who is able to work with Jewishindividuals as well as local agencies toensure that every member of thecommunity receives the right level of careand support. Support is based on theneeds of the individual and could rangefrom the completion of forms to theprovision of emotional support. Whateveryour needs, we are here to help so please

feel free to contact us. You can visit thecentre or we can arrange to visit you athome or at a venue of your choice.

Befriending schemeBecoming a volunteer does not only have tobe at the centre or at our connect@club.

There are also many opportunities forvolunteers to join our befriending scheme,where their role is to visit people in their ownhomes. These members of the communityare often isolated and may not be able tocome to the centre, but still would love tobe involved. Befriending volunteers may popin to say hello and have a chat over a cup oftea or play cards with members – the serviceis personalised to the member’s needs.
