Who will see and / or evaluate this research? What do you want the first impression to be?

What is the mood or style you intend to use?

How big (or thick) will this research be?

Where will pictures and figures go? What colors will you be using?

    Design Principles -

    Typography - Color -

Balance - Involves equalizing the visualweight of elements on both sides of a

    vertical axis

    5/36

Proportion - Relationship between an elementin the layout and other elements or

    the page itself.

Emphasis - It involves giving a singlegraphic element in a page or

    layout a visual significance.

    Focus -

    Size -

    Color -

    Contrast -

Harmony - Overall cohesion or collectionof a layouts parts, all elementsshould be in harmony with

    each other.

Contrast - If two elements are not exactlythe same, make them different,Really different, if not you get aconflict not a contrast

Repetition - Repeating an object throughout thelayout to give a sense of consistency ,

this object can be a bold font a thickline, or anything that can be visually

    recognized.

  • 8/8/2019 How to Make a Better Research

    12/36

Alignment - Nothing on the page should be putby chance, every element should

be in a visual connection tosomething else on the page.

Try finding other thing on the page

to align with, even if they are faraway from each other.

This tells a reader that even things

are not close they belong to thesame piece.

  • 8/8/2019 How to Make a Better Research

    13/36

Symbolism - To use unmistakable symbols to bringthe idea you need the reader to

understand without saying it in wordsor using a picture to describe it.

    What dothose pictures

    tell you?

  • 8/8/2019 How to Make a Better Research

    14/36

Should put these principles in mind and

use whatever necessary to show theidea without compromising design

impact. Leave out all that is unnecessary.

Dont clutter, start simple and add asyou go, (think of it as adding salt)

Do not be the only judge.

Get inspirations from magazines, websites and Ads.

Within the limits, be free to express

    your personality.

Typography is the ART of setting type (using

fonts), it gives ideas and words a voice.

    Role

1- Attract and hold audience2- EaseReading

3- Emphasis important information4- Establish harmony among the elementsof a design5-Create and establish recognition.

    Type can represent many things,

    it has a voice

Type can be light or HEAVY

Type can be childish or Serious

Type can be Masculine or Feminine Type can be Western or Modern

Use readable line spacingavoid too near or two wide line spacing, both discomfort reading

Size the font appropriatelyReadable fonts range from 8 to 12 pt, avoid small letter spacing

Use the correct type face for yo r s bjectavoid fonts with character details that disappear when font is small

    I am a small font

    This line and

    the next one

    are too far

Remember the marginsavoid tight margins, about 50% of page should be left

for margins, and should help with binding (either left or right)

Mix fonts carefullyavoid too many fonts in a page, two types are enough ona single page, one for the Headline and the other forthe body.

AllCapsAll caps means using capital letters writing a whole line or paragraph, which is not advisable, and is considered likeSHOUTING,use it wisely..

Alignment, use grid if you will to

keep things in order, break it, toemphasis an element.

InitialCaps, avoid using them in thelower third of the page

Rule of thirds, divide your page intothree horizontal parts, and placeelements accordingly for a more

    visually appealing layout

Single Visual, simplest way to powerful layouts is to use a

single picture with a short text

Size, use large graphics for importantgoals, and smaller ones for lessimportant , when you are out ofspace, sacrifice the small ones first.

Color Harmony:Colors are divided to Warm andCold, based on the impression it leaves on us.

  • 8/8/2019 How to Make a Better Research

    23/36

Common color systems:Most commonly used systems areRGB andCMYK, they affect how

images appear and how they are infact created.

CMYK stands for the main fourcolors,Cyan which is blue,Magenta, is Red, Yellow, and

Black, which is responsible forthe shades.

In this system colors are paste, andadding them to each other givesnear black brown.

  • 8/8/2019 How to Make a Better Research

    24/36

RGB stands for Red, Green, Blue, which is the system used for screenslike TVs and computer monitors.

In this system the three colors are lights so adding them to each otherresults in white.

    25/36

Need to know the color system we intendto use to avoid colors appearingdifferently from what we expect.

A common mistake usually happens whenwe design something on the screen(which is RGB) and expect to see thesame colors printed on a color printer(which isCMYK)

A simple solution for this, is to use theCMYK system to match the colors on thescreen or even simpler to make an outputinCMYK and see how colors wouldappear before final printing.

Design is not an optional extra. If something has been presented in avisual form, it has been designed. Thus, everyone who presentsinformation in a chosen form has made design decisions. DavidWhitbread, TheDesign Manual,UNSW, 2002

Put in mind that what you know about design is an introduction to beable to make impressive presentations not only in college, but also atwork.

It would really make a difference to practice design, every now and thenas we all know practice makes perfect

Taking others opinion about your work, would help very much improvethe quality of your work and the time you take to get the idea you needfor your work.
