Imagine that you’re at your sweet spot. The illumination is just perfect, you’re flipping through each page, and you’re lost in a world of you own and everything seems perfect. Even your coffee and favorite snack taste much better. It seems nothing in the world could go wrong...

But here comes one of the words you seldom use enough to remember its meaning.

What do you do,do you pickup a dictionary, or just assume a meaning and skip the work of finding a proper definition for later?

You reason that everything looks far away from your sweet spot, and besides, no one will notice if you skip this word.

No! A dictionary would be too distracting. So you skip the work for a far more interesting storyline.

But the book is so interesting, so much so, that after you finish reading it, you spend some more time reminiscing and matchmaking certain possibilities in your head, and you totally forget to search for the meaning of those words that you seldom use.

Sadly this cycle repeats itself, and it becomes a habit, while your vocabulary becomes so limited that you find it difficult to express yourself without a long essay and a dictionary.

But there is a simple solution to this habit on the next page, and I believe that it will improveyour vocabulary without spoiling your enjoyment.

My idea is simple and it is mainly used when writing academic publications.

When reading an academic publication, you will notice that you are often directed to a glossary of useful words that aid your understanding of the author’s perspective. Through this glossary, your understanding of the author’s publication(s) becomes more robust.

Now, imagine if the authors who publish your favorite novels, books, and magazines, include a glossary of words that are generally seldom used in our everyday vocabulary into their write-up. Wouldn’t this be great? You would no longer need a dictionary to find the definition of words and how they are to be applied in each context!

I believe that this idea would improve your vocabulary while enjoying a good write-up.

I understand that it would be prohibitive and exhaustive to make a novel too cumbersome by adding a very detailed glossary. So to avoid this, authors can compile their glossary from words that appear frequently in their text and are often not used in normal everyday language.

Even without this idea coming into full stream, you can still improve your vocabulary by creating a habit of jotting down words that you might find difficult to remember their meanings at the back of your book, then at more suitable time, you can search for their meanings. After applying this temporary solution for a while, you might soon find that it would be much easier to have a glossary of these words at the back of your book. So why not take a proactive step and write the author of your favorite book and suggest this idea? You never know, they might just publish their next edition with a glossary
