CHAPTER 8

MAKING SURVEY/SITE PLAN It is on quite important that we take this time out to learn how to plot survey/site plan. I hope you will find this chapter helpful. Before now you should have set the drawing limit for the job you are doing. If however you have not set drawing limits then it is important you do so now. If you did not start from the beginning of the book then you will have to go to Chapter 2 to study it. We are going to make settings that will make the site plan we are going to make to be similar to the survey plan the surveyor provided. If you are ready let’s get going…

The Drawing Units dialog box will be displayed.

We are going to plot the survey plan shown below and add the outline of the plan we drew earlier into the survey plan.

I want you to have these in mind: our site plan must be plotted in clockwise direction but the line you

start with does not really matter the basic formula for the plotting of survey plan is

@distance<angle, for example if a side of a plan is 23.45m and the angle is 1320 21’33”, then you have to type it this way - @23450<132d21’33”

Do not be bothered about all those stuff written just above you wil get it clearer as we go on. Select the Line tool or the Polyline tool (any can serve)

Select any one

Page 10: How to Make Site Plan In AutoCAD

OBIAKU NNAMDI www.cadtrainer.blogspot.com

We are going to start with the line with length 28,43m. Now, click on a point of your choice on the drawing environment and do as directed below:

1. Type @28430<72d27’ and press (do not click)

2. Type @17350<163d06’ and press

3. Type @26500<253d58’ and press

4. Type @17000<333d07’ and press twice.

The resulting figure will be as shown below

Note that:

When drawing you could make a mistake. If this happens it does not mean that you must start from the beginning, simply continue from where you the error/mistake occurred.

Some survey plans may not close-up like the one we have plotted above. This is not your fault ( it is probably from the surveyor’s instrument parallax or some other reason),so long as your actually plotted according to the written lengths and bearings. I suggest you close it up yourself (using any of the methods I suggested below) in cases when the error is minimal ( but minimal may mean different things to different people), if you feel the error is to much then, you can get back to the surveyor from necessary correction.

The Method 1:

In this method you will have the lengths of the first and last bearing lines you drew remaining the same but their angles changing (slightly in most cases – but nothing can really be to slight when especially the length involved it quite long). Just go ahead and take the Method 1

1. Select the Circle command

2. Click at Point G (see the figure below)

3. Type the length of that last line plotted : 17000 and press

Click

Point G

Point H

Page 12: How to Make Site Plan In AutoCAD

12

OBIAKU NNAMDI www.cadtrainer.blogspot.com

The resulting figure will be as shown below.

4. Select the Circle command again. This time click at Point H (see the figure below)

5. Type the length of the first line plotted : 28430 and press

The resulting figure will be as shown below.

Point H

Page 13: How to Make Site Plan In AutoCAD

13

OBIAKU NNAMDI www.cadtrainer.blogspot.com

Notice that the two circles are intersecting at a point. It is at that point that you should make the first point of Line H (first line) and the end point of Line G (last line).

6. Click on Line G and then click at its top endpoint (see the figure below) and drag it to the intersection point of the two circles.

Line H

Line G

1. Click and

2. Drag to this point

Page 14: How to Make Site Plan In AutoCAD

14

OBIAKU NNAMDI www.cadtrainer.blogspot.com

See the resulting figure below

We are going to do the same to the Line H.

7. Click on Line H and drag it to the intersection point of the two circles.

See the resulting figure before and after the circles are deleted.

The Method 2:

In this method the lengths of the first and last bearing lines are altered while their angles remain the same.

1. Select the Chamfer command or the Fillet command

2. Click at any point on Line G at any point on Line H respectively.

The resulting object will be as shown below

Now, you can offset the necessary lines to create the roads displayed on the scanned survey plan.

Let us offset 6000 to the right of Line X and 15000 to the lower part of Line Y (see the following two diagram).

Line X

Line Y

Line Z

Line Y

Line X

Line A

Page 17: How to Make Site Plan In AutoCAD

17

OBIAKU NNAMDI www.cadtrainer.blogspot.com

Offset Line Z downwards by 6000 now to show the access road there (see the figure below).

Highlight Line X and copy it at Point H and place it at Point I (see the figures below)

Point H

Point I

18

OBIAKU NNAMDI www.cadtrainer.blogspot.com

Now, using Fillet or Chamfer command, join Line Z with the Line B (see figure below)

Go ahead and build the access road properly…

Notice that from our original survey plan that the access road outline are broken, let us just make it so too for the sake of this training manual.

We are going to form Layers for the site outline and the access roads respectively.

Select the Layer Manager command icon

Click to select

Select the New Layer command icon

Type site plan

2. Type access road

1. Select the New Layer command

You have succeeded in making the access road a layer with a broken line property.

1. Select 2. Click

1. Select

2. Click

23

OBIAKU NNAMDI www.cadtrainer.blogspot.com

Now go ahead and highlight the lines representing the access roads. You should have something like what is shown below.

Meanwhile still leave the access road highlighted and continue as directed below.

Click

OBIAKU NNAMDI www.cadtrainer.blogspot.com

By doing so you have converted those access road lines to posses the properties you assigned to the access roads. Notice that nothing dramatic happened. What do we do now?

The resulting situation is shown below

1. Change to 150

2. Click

We forgot to make the lineweight for the site plan bolder/thicker. Let’s go back to the Layer Manager.

From the box displayed below select 0.6 (see the figure below).

Select

Click

1. Select 0.60mm (or any other thick line but not beyond 1.00mm) 2. Click

Page 28: How to Make Site Plan In AutoCAD

28

OBIAKU NNAMDI www.cadtrainer.blogspot.com

Now highlight the entire site outline

2. Select site outline

1. Click

Page 29: How to Make Site Plan In AutoCAD

29

OBIAKU NNAMDI www.cadtrainer.blogspot.com

Notice that the site plan outline is now weightier than before…if yours have not changed to a thicker line then simply go to the Status bar at the lower part of the screen ( see the figure below) and click

See the result.

You are doing well aren’t you? What to do now is to make the outline of the plan you want to place on the site and align it with the access road of your choice…get going all things are possible. Try some refreshment or try to rest if you are tied before you continue working…it’s nice to have you there.

Click to put on

Obiaku Nnamdi graduated from the Department of Architecture of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri in the year 2010. He likes CAD packages and likes teaching others how to use them. The book you are having is one of his contributions to the easy learning of AutoCAD as it concerns the Architect and other builders. People of other profession could find it helpful also. You could get his training in both hard and soft copies depending on what you want. He also offers live training to cooperate bodies and private firms. If you desire to reach him for training negotiations call any of the phone numbers already displayed on the pages of this learning manual. Feel free, he is at your disposal to make CAD interesting and easier to understand. Yes, you can achieve what you should if you believe in Jesus Name, for there is no mountain is too high, no valley too deep and even the sky is not too high.
