How to Maximize Your Workout Results with Food

You put a lot into your workout, so it makes sense that you want to get the most out of that time. One of the best ways to maximize workout results is to eat the right foods before and after you train.

Healthy eating doesn’t necessarily mean constantly counting and measuring calories. To maximize your workout, all you really need is the right nutrients to get your body working properly. Although there are several variations of the best foods to eat for maximizing your workout results, there are a few standard rules to follow no matter what diet you choose.

Before Your Workout

There’s a new training method floating around the workout world that is based on a “no-food-prior-to-workout” model. However, the problem with this concept is that it shortens your workout. Because you aren’t getting enough nutrients before training, you won’t have enough energy to sustain a long and strenuous workout session.

Not sticking to healthy eating before a workout can also cause extreme fatigue, potentially leading to severely low blood pressure. If your blood pressure drops too far, you run the risk of passing out, which is certainly not a good idea! So, make a habit of healthy eating before you train.

What Should You Eat?

In order to have enough energy during a workout, your body needs some form of complex carbohydrate in addition to a small amount of protein. A small amount of fat will help too, since fats keeps you satiated longer. But, don’t go out and buy a fast food meal prior to a workout; look for whole foods that contain lots of healthy nutrients!

This might seem contradictory, especially since many diets discourage carbohydrates. Without the energy from carbohydrates, however, your workout threshold won’t be as high. You also need to make the distinction between simple carbohydrates such as processed sugar, versus complex carbohydrates that contain many more nutrients. A great snack to have 30 minutes prior to a workout is a piece of sprouted grain toast with natural peanut butter – a protein carbohydrate combination that will pack a great punch!
