HOW TO OPTIMIZE YOUR NEWSLETTER
INSPIRED BY:Sailthru
The first step to optimize your newsletter is asking yourself two questions; “Who is my user?”
and “Where are they digesting my content?”
INSPIRED BY:Sailthru
Traditional demographics like gender, age, and location are no longer viable. Instead, focus on a
consumer’s continuing engagement with your product to decide the best content to share with them.

There is no strategy to categorize people’s interest. Deliver unique content to each user at the time and on
the medium that’s most appropriate to their lifestyle.

Brands with real consumer relationships send relevant and timely content. Focus on quality over quantity.

Make sharing your first priority when crafting your email. Whether a breaking news story or afunny comic, include a component your reader
can’t resist forwarding to their friends.

When testing new features, focus on a single element to determine its effectiveness. Start small,
measure your results, and increase your ambition as you succeed.

Countdowns, GIFs, and promotions are effective tools to increase engagement but should never distract from the core call to action. If your user
is sharing the photo and not reading the text, your hypothesis has failed.

Institute an effective balance of education and selling. Try sending useful and tailored content about user’s likes — such as local events and holidays — that is genuinely valuable to them.

If selling is your main goal, make your user the main character of a story demonstrating
what it’s like using your product or service.
INSPIRED BY:Delighted
When asking for feedback, ask a single question and allow users to respond. Try Delighted’s: ‘How
likely are you to recommend us to a friend?’

Remember that half of emails are read on mobile devices. If your content isn’t optimized for
the first look your users takes on their phone, you’ve lost 50% of your customer base
