How To Pick
A Yoga Style
(part 3)
Oh so many styles eh? But wait, there’s more
j. Sivananda
Now this is a personal favorite of mine, not only for the attention to detail that it provides but,
the fact that thus far, for me personally, the order of execution of the yoga asanas, abdominal
exercises and breathing exercises seems the most agreeable.
It is noteworthy of mention that Sivananda is one of the world's largest schools of yoga.
Moreover, it was developed by Vishnu-devananda and named for his teacher, Sivananda yoga
follows a set structure that includes pranayama, classic asanas, and relaxation. Vishnu-devananda
wrote one of the contemporary yoga classics, The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga. First
published in 1960, the book is still one of the best introductions to yoga available.
k. Svaroopa Yoga
This particular style was created by Rama Berch,
One differentiating factor attributed to this style is that Svaroopa Yoga teaches several different
ways of doing more common poses, all the while laying a huge emphasis on elongating and
opening the spine.
l. Viniyoga
Research into this style of yoga shows that Viniyoga is not so much a style as it is a way of
developing practices for individual conditions and purposes.
It’s differentiating factor is the approach developed by Sri. T. Krishnamacharya, teacher of well-
known contemporary masters B.K.S. Iyengar, K. Pattabhi Jois and Indra Devi, and continued by
his son, T.K.V. Desikachar.
So, to conclude that’s 12 styles of yoga that one can choose from.
Suffice it to say that even with the dozen methods listed here, you still have other derivatives
such as Pilates, the Five Tibetan Rites, The Royal Court exercises, Burpees and a few other
direct descendants of this particular art of physical culture.
It’s safe to say if you pick a few, doing so can’t hurt and may in fact help, immensely.
In friendship,
