Preparing the Hard Drive

Before installing OS/2 Warp 4.5.x versions, the BIOS Setup and Preparingthe Hard Drive sections must be performed. If these preliminary steps havebeen completed, proceed to the Installing OS/2 Warp 4.5 manual. Thisprocedure prepares the hard drive for the operating system installation.

NOTE It is assumed that at this point, the BIOS has been configured and theOS/2 installer boot CD, labeled OS/2 Warp 4, IBM, Version 4.5.2,Installation (disk 1 of 2) has been inserted into the CDROM drive, and thesystem has just been powered up or rebooted.

1. After a few moments, the following IBM OS/2 Warp Setup andInstallation screen will appear, requesting the second OS/2 Warp disk.Place the OS/2 Warp 4 CD labeled OS/2 Warp 4, IBM, Version4.5.2, Installation (disk 2 of 2) (P/N 50550001) into the drive, andpress [Enter].

2. After a few moments, the following informational Welcome! screenwill appear. Press [Enter] to continue the loading process.

3. Depending on the initial condition of the hard drive at this point, oneof 2 different blue screens with white text will appear.

If the message at the top of the next blue screen is Volumes TooSmall (see step 16 for an example), the installer found no harddrive volumes that OS/2 can be installed on. This would be normalif the drive was new and no volumes have been created on it, or ifall previously created volumes have already been deleted. In thiscase, go directly to step 16 where the LVM utility will be used tocreate a volume.

If the message at the top of the next screen is OS/2 Warp Version4 Installation (as illustrated below), one or more volumes currentlyexist on the drive. The next 12 steps will remove that volumeallowing the installation to proceed from a known state.

In this case, the top line shows a 19092MB HPFS volume that is defined as the machine’s c: drive. Thevolume has the name OS/2 and has been set to installable. This volumeis highlighted in blue, indicating that it has been selected. Othersystems may show different values than those shown here, andadditional volumes may be defined.

The next line down shows similar information relating to the CD.

The line at the bottom of the screen shows some basic informationrelating to the hard drive hardware the volume selected at the top ofthe screen has been created on.

Use the up and down arrow keys as required to select the volume that isto be removed. This will typically be the c: drive volume as shown inthe above example. Once the volume to be removed has been selected, press [Enter]. The menu illustrated below will appear.
