How to Prepare for Hunting SeasonBy: John P. Schwan

Content

1) Survey the areas you wish to hunt right before the season begins.

2) Purchase the proper equipment.

3) Strategically place your equipment.

4) Prepare the stage for the hunt.

1) Survey the areas you wish to hunt right before the season begins.

Take note of the following:

Where are old fallen brush/trees that seem to have been used by animals for hiding in the past? Where are newly fallen brush/trees that could be used by animals as a safe haven in the future? What areas are located nearby that would serve well as a place for me to hunt from? Where are the local food sources for these animals located?

2) Purchase the proper equipment.

Take note of the following:

What prey are in the areas I wish to hunt? How big or small are these animals? What weapon can I use that will not scare prey away in the process of utilizing the weapon, while also effectively immobilizing and/or killing them? What safety gear is appropriate for the type of hunting I'm looking to do? What clothing do I need to blend into my surroundings and keep my body temperature optimal through my stay in the wild? What can I use to pack food that is not going to deter my prey from passing by? Do I need any sounding devices to call the prey closer?

3) Strategically place your equipment.

Take note of the following:

Are there any structures nearby the fertile and well-used areas that could serve as a place of hiding for me? What places have distinct smells that could mask my smell from my prey? What areas have the same colors used as my hunting clothing? Which locations would give me the largest panoramic views, so as to target and kill my prey with ease?

4) Prepare the stage for the hunt.

Take note of the following:

What natural foods in the area can I bring into my preferred hunting location to increase the likelihood of my prey walking through? How can I make nearby foods more accessible to my prey that, in their natural habitat, is usually out of their reach? How can I prepare the surrounding areas to attract my prey?

Thank You
