Taking and scoring well at the SAT opens up a lot of opportunities for students. The SAT scores are very important when it comes to getting an admission to the prestigious colleges of the United States. Though it isn’t a requirement for all of the colleges, a vast majority of the colleges do rely on SAT scores. This includes the Ivy League.

Thus, the importance of taking and scoring well in the SAT can’t be underestimated. Still, there are many who struggle to get a satisfactory score in the test. On the other hand, several students do score excellent marks. Why the difference?

Scoring well in the SAT isn’t only about your knowledge of the given subjects. It is also about your strategy; the way you approach preparations. Quite a few students who get good marks in their high school fail to make an impact when it comes to SAT. This is because they are unable to prepare themselves in the right manner.

While there is no “secret” to SAT preparations, there are a few tips that may give you the edge. Preparation, as discussed above, is the key. You can’t just take the test out of the blue and score a 300+.

As they say, practice makes a man perfect. If you look around, you will find that there is more than enough material for you to start learning. On regular intervals, take practice tests. It will provide you an honest assessment of where you stand. Once you know that, you can always put in the efforts to improve and get better at it.

Find your areas of strength and weakness. For example, some students are really weak at critical reading. If you’re one of them, brushing up your vocabulary can help you improve your critical reading score. There are several books that list the most common SAT vocabulary words for you to learn.

If there are other areas where you’re weak, you should work really hard on those to strengthen them. If need be, take help from a private tutor. There are several subject specific books that you should go through as well. For example, if one of your subjects is US History, you may look for an AP US history study guide.

Other than this, acquaint yourself with the calculator as much as possible. It can help a lot with some of the calculations. As you’re allowed to take the calculator with you to the test, it makes sense to know how to use it. Pay attention to such small details, be confident in your abilities and you’d do really well.
