The Benefits Of Taking The SAT
2
Should I take the SAT? This question is
likely on the minds of many high school
students in their junior or senior year.
SAT subject tests are not a requirement
in all colleges and universities in the
US. However, many schools recommend
that you sit the said test because it
gives them a sense of how you will be able to apply your thinking,
writing, and study skills which are required for course work.
Other benefits of taking the SAT
Qualify in top colleges and universities
Schools have different entry requirements. Some require you to take
SAT I, also called the general SAT. Some universities, like those in
the Ivy League require you to take two or more of twenty possible
SAT subject tests, which are collectively called SAT II. All major
universities accept SAT as a college entrance exam, although it is
more popular with Eastern colleges than it is with Western colleges.
Get free scholarship money
For many students, the only way to get a college degree is by taking
out a loan. The increasing cost of attending college and the difficulty
in landing a good paying job immediately after college can make
paying off these loans difficult. If you have excellent SAT scores, you
will find many scholarship opportunities, allowing you to reduce the
3
amount of money you have to borrow to fund your education.
Scholarships do not have to be repaid, so if you qualify in them, you
won’t spend a good chunk of your adult life paying off college debts.
Be admitted to the school you want even with a
low GPA
Having low GPA in high school does not always
mean that you don’t have the brains to survive or
thrive in college. If you get high scores in the
SAT, you will be able to show how prepared you
are for college course work where your GPA
doesn’t.
Help you land good jobs after college
Employers take various criteria into account when assessing job
applicants. Although not always the case, some companies routinely
ask for SAT scores especially if they are filling jobs that require
excellent quantitative ability. Of course, your university
achievements will override your SAT performance, but excellent SAT
scores can help make your application stronger. Considering the
many benefits you can get from taking this test, it is important that
you spend a good amount of time on SAT test preparation.
SAT prep courses are offered around the year. You can review online
or offline at least six weeks before your preferred test date. You can
choose from self-paced, instructor-led, small group instruction, and
private tutorials.
