How to publish articles to PokerNews You have been assigned to do an article for PokerNews. After completing the article it is now time to upload it to the PokerNews website. 1. The first step is to navigate to pokernews.com/adm and logging in. You should now be shown the homepage. How to publish articles to PokerNewsYou have been assigned to do an article for PokerNews. After completing the article it is now time to upload it to the PokerNews website.

1. The first step is to navigate to pokernews.com/adm and logging in.

You should now be shown the homepage. To the left of the website there will be a column with all sort of links but right now that’s not important. What you want to pay attention to is the top bar shown in the image below.

When were assigned your article, the assignment should have mentioned what type of article it would be. For most interns articles would be mainly promotional with some exceptions of news articles.

2. Click on the specific tab you have to publish in. If you have to publish in News you don’t have to click the tab as you should already have it open after signing in.

In the top right corner there is a button called ‘New Article’

3. Click on ‘New Article’

You will be shown a page with many text boxes, but it’s actually quite simple what you have to do at each step.

You begin by filling in the Title Box. As you probably already know, titles shouldn’t be too long and must sound catchy. All the words in the title should begin with a capital letter except for conjunctions (e.g. the, a(n), of) unless of course they are at the beginning of the title or a name.

4. Write the title in the ‘Title Box’

Next comes the URL box. After simply clicking once in the URL box, a URL will be automatically generated. You still have the option to change the URL as you wish. Keep in mind that the URL should still be relevant to someone who reads it. Someone must know the contents of the URL by simply reading the link. If you have a long title, you can choose to take out any conjunctions or unnecessary words.

5. Adjust the automatically generated URL if needed.

Next you will come to the ‘Publish Settings’ box. Here you can pick the exact time you want the article to be published and furthermore there are five boxes which can be checked. As the author the text you must check the “Hide this article” box. This is because your text has to be proof-read before going live. Sometimes a mandatory translation of your text is also needed, usually for sponsored articles. When you are assigned to write an article, you will also be told if mandatory translation is needed. For the rest of the option, they are nothing of concern for you.

6. Check “Hide this article” and if necessary “Mandatory translation”

Next comes the Category drop-down box. There are many categories which you can choose from. Half of the time there will not be a category which suits the article you wrote.

7. Choose a category if relevant.

The content box is where most of the magic happens. Here you will insert the text you wrote. Alternatively you can always choose to write your article in the text box right away. You could choose to do so as formatting from your favorite word processor does not paste into the content box.

On the top of the content box you will see a bar with many icons.

All these buttons are to help you with formatting. The following is a description of what the most important button does:

Heading. When you click on this button you will be presented with 3 options all named Heading 1 – 3. This button is used for titles and subtitles within the text. This helps keep uniformity across all PokerNews articles. To make a piece of text in the heading format you will have to first highlight it and then click on the proper heading button. After proper formatting the text should look like [H=1]Heading example[/H].

Bold. The bold option makes font letters thicker. You apply it by highlighting text and then clicking the B or pressing Ctrl+B. The text should look something like [B]Bold[/B].

Text that should be bold are tournament names, poker brands, headings, hyperlinks, bonus codes or anything that you deem to be important to stick out.

Italic. The italic options make fonts tilt to the right. You apply it by highlighting text and then clicking the I or pressing Ctrl+I. The text should look something like [I]Italic[/I]

The PokerNews name should be in italics after the first mention of the name in the article.

Bullet and Ordered list. You can use these buttons if you either want a list of bullet or numbered points. You apply each one by first making a list of words or sentences under each other, highlighting them and then clicking on your desired style of list. The formatting should look something like the following:

Simple table. Simple tables are often used when posting a tournament schedules but can be used for whatever needs a table. The easiest way to use the table is by first clicking the table button, selecting your table options and then clicking insert. You should get something that looks like this:

Replace ‘heading1’ and ‘heading2’ with your own headings, making sure that each heading title is separated by a |. Under the heading is where you will put the rest of the information for your table. Again the information should be separated by a | for each column. A finished table could look like this:

Quote. When you want to really highlight what someone had to say you can use this button. Simply highlight the relevant text and click on the Quote button. Keep in mind this is not to be used within paragraphs. Think of its use the same as with a picture in a text, except it’s only text.

Video. To be used when you want to put a video from YouTube, Vimeo or similar websites in your text. Embedded codes do not work in the content box, you have to use this button to insert a video in the article. Simply click the button, paste the relevant URL and your video will be posted in the article.

Insert Poker Player. Sometimes you will be writing about known poker players. Use this button to reference them to PokerNews pages about players.

Insert Card. If you are writing about specific hands or cards the dealer has dealt you can use this button to insert graphic cards in the text.

Hyperlink. If there is anywhere in the text where you wish to enter a hyperlink you do so with this button. Simply highlight the text which you wish to hyperlink and then click on the hyperlink button. Fill in the URL which you want the hyperlink to direct at and then click insert.

When writing an article you should always try to link to other PokerNews pages. For example if you are writing a promo for PokerStars, you can always link to the PokerNews PokerStars page.

You can always click on the Preview tab in the top right corner of the content box to see how your formatting is doing.

8. After pasting or writing the text for the article, complete appropriate formatting

What comes next are the Summary, Sharelines and Meta description boxes. All their contents should in a way or two say the same thing. It’s okay to write the same sentences in each box, but you can always mix it up a bit. Just write a short sentence describing what is in the text. It usually differs from the title of the article as sometimes titles try not to give all information right away to lure readers into actually reading the articles.

9. Fill the Summary, Sharelines and Meta description boxes

Now comes to moment to choose a picture for your article. Usually you will be given a picture to use as the leading picture, sometimes you will have to pick a picture from the gallery. Click on ‘Choose File’ to upload a picture from your computer or click on ‘Add picture from gallery’ to choose a picture in the PokerNews database.

10. Choose a leading picture.

Next you will have to write the authors name. In almost all cases it’s going to be your own name so go ahead and write your name. Start writing your name in the Authors box and as you do your name should appear from a drop-down list. Click on your name to have the article linked to your name. If there are multiple authors, separate the names with a comma.

11. Pick the Author(s)

At this point you will have to choose at least 3 tags for the article. Tags are used when people are searching for specific content on the PokerNews site or on a search engine. It helps search engines find relevant posts. You will be suggested tags, you can use them by clicking on them. If they are not the relevant ones, simply click on the drop down menu and click on the right tags.

You can furthermore insert some text for Twitter. The text here should be similar to the one you wrote in Summary, Sharelines and Meta description boxes.

13. Fill in twitter text

Depending on the content of your article, sometimes it has to be geo-restricted. For example in the United States gambling promotional posts are not allowed. Other times promotions are limited to selected countries.

14. Set geo-restrictions if necessary

In the ‘We Recommend’ box you can choose to choose a fitting article which will “pop-up” on the side of your article when you scroll all the way down.

16. Click on Save and Return

You article is now saved. For a full preview of your article you can click on ‘View this article in new window’ under the title box. This link only appears after saving your article.
