How to set up a Flickr account.

Open an internet browser and navigate to: http://www.flickr.com/

On the right hand-side at the top of the screen is the Create Your Account button, click this.

Flickr is not owned by Google so you cannot use your googlemail details to login, you will need to

create a new login to use Flickr. This is a Yahoo login (the main competitor to Google). Google does

have its own photo sharing site Picasa, the reason we are using Flickr is that currently it is the most

popular photo sharing site.

On the next screen click Sign Up at the bottom of the panel on the right hand side.

On the next screen complete the form.

Just like when you joined googlemail you might have to try a number of different usernames to find

one that is available, it is advisable to try and make it similar to your googlemail one so it is easier to

remember.

In the alternative email use your googlemail email address. After you have completed all the fields in

the form click Create My Account.

If you have typed out the swirl letters correctly (took me two attempts) then you will be taken to a

screen that congratulates you.

Click on the large yellow “Continue” button. Type in your password at the prompt.

You are now logged in for the very first time.

You now need to choose a screen name. This can be your organisation name, your personal name or

any other word(s) that describe your intentions. You will need to have a screen name that is unique

within the Flickr site so just like the googlemail set up you may have difficulty setting up “John

Smith” as a screen name. The screen name for this course is socmedsg.

In the middle of the screen is a panel titled “Here’s how to get started.” Select option 1 “Personalise

your profile”.

This is the text from the “let’s do it” panel. Click on the blue button to get started.

Ok, let's set up your Flickr basics.

It's quick to complete, and will help make sure you have the important Flickr settings taken care of. You can skip

any step, although it's best if you complete each screen.

The most important step to set up early is step 2 – Choose your custom Flickr URL.

Customising your Flickr web address makes it easier to remember and find online. With millions of

Flickr users it is very important that your photos have a relevant and memorable address.

Our web address is http://www.flickr.com/photos/socmedsg/

Uploading your first image to Flickr

If you are not already logged in then log in to Flickr using your Yahoo username and password. You

will have a copy of this in your email given when you set up the account.

If you are logged into Flickr already then click on the Home link at the top left of the screen.

In the “Here’s how to get started” panel select option 2 – Upload your first photos.

With a free account you can upload 100 MB of images per month.

You've used 0% of your 100 MB photo limit and 0 of your 2 video limit this month.

Click on the “Choose photos and videos” link. This will invite you to browse your computer to find

the image you wish to upload. You can upload more than one image at a time.

Set the privacy of the image(s) you are uploading. Usually the setting will be left as the default

setting of Public. Anyone can see images marked Public.

When you are ready click the large “Upload Photos and Videos” button

Now click on the “Add a description” link.

Just like WordPress, adding tags to an image makes it easier to find. Also adding a description is

helpful. If you are using Flickr as a photo archive, spending a minute of two to add tags and

descriptions to your images can turn random photos into useful evidence for committee meetings or

funders.

When you have written all you want to click on the blue “Save” button at the bottom of the page.

You now have an image on Flickr that is titled, tagged and described. This image can now be shared,

archived, imported into WordPress or just stored. This image will not now get lost, forgotten or

become a mystery image which many photographs end their days as.
