How to set up your social media channels

You know which channel is right for you and have planned your strategy, so it is now time to

set up your pages. This is a step by step guide to setting up Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and

Instagram.

Facebook

1) To use Facebook as a business, you or someone on your team will need to have a

personal Facebook account set up. If you haven’t already, you can do this on the

signup page with your first name; surname; email address; new password; birthday

and gender.

2) When you first open Facebook it will take you to the homepage. In the right-hand

corner of the homepage there’s a drop-down arrow next to home where you can

click create page.

3) This will take you through to this page, where you will choose the type of page you

want to set up. We recommend setting up as a “cause or community”. When you

click on this it will prompt you to set up a name.

4) You will then be prompted to upload a profile picture and cover photo. We would

advise that your profile picture is your logo and then you could have a more general

photograph as the cover photo, such as below, or a more relevant banner of a

current campaign you’re running. The dynamics for a good quality cover photo are

851 x 315 megapixels.

5) Next, add a username. A username is a simpler way to search for your page e.g.

@WalesCooperativeCentre.

6) Now, a little bit about what you do, and it will be shown under the ‘about’ section of

your page (see Wales Co-Operative example).

Click on the ‘add a short description’ prompt and then fill in with your location;

opening times; business info; contact details; insert a link to your website; give an

overview of what you do; give any general information; mention any products you

may have and finally enter key words that relate to what it is that you do e.g. ‘charity;

care; public and government service.’ This will appear as below.

Page 4: How to set up your social media channels...with on LinkedIn. For a beginner’s page, you will only need to use the below two and most likely only ‘designated admin’: Designated

7) To build a following, you can start by inviting your own personal friends to like the

page. If someone likes your page, the posts you do will come up on their newsfeed.

The more likes you get, the better received your page is. See Build your following

resource for more tips.

8) You can set up different roles and responsibilities on the account, so that more than

one person can manage the social feed. This may not be entirely necessary, but if so,

you can do this by clicking on Settings > page roles and then entering the name or

email address of a person to assign them a ‘role’. Below you can see the different

roles along the top and the responsibilities these give you down the side. We

recommend one person who is the Admin (able to manage the entire page) and then

others as an Editor (meaning they’re able to post and manage the page but aren’t

able to assign/remove people from their roles.

Page 5: How to set up your social media channels...with on LinkedIn. For a beginner’s page, you will only need to use the below two and most likely only ‘designated admin’: Designated

9) You can then add posts with either image or video. To upload, you click on the

camera icon, then press upload image or video. If you want to upload more than one

image you can always click ‘carousel’ or ‘slideshow’ which allows pictures to be

uploaded in a multiple rolling/video like form.

10) When you upload a video, you will see the below screen. You will need to add a title

for your video and then a description. The description will appear below the video

much like a normal post, and you will use this to add context. You can add ‘tags’ that

are relevant to your video such as ‘care’ ‘charity’ etc. You will also need to wait for the

video to upload to 100% in the write hand corner before publishing the post.

Page 6: How to set up your social media channels...with on LinkedIn. For a beginner’s page, you will only need to use the below two and most likely only ‘designated admin’: Designated

11) You can also ‘schedule’ images, video or general posts to be posted automatically at

a certain time or day. All you need to do is click on the arrow next to publish, select

schedule and then choose the date and the time (in 24hr clock) that you want the

post to go live.

Twitter

1) Twitter is different to Facebook, as you do not connect a business to an existing

personal account. You will need to start by creating a specific Twitter account for your

organisation. This is done by visiting the website and signing up.

2) This will then prompt you to set up a username – which could be as an example

@CaretocooperateWales. People will search you by putting @ followed by your

username.

3) You will then need to do the same as Facebook and add a profile picture and a

twitter banner. As you can see below.

4) Twitter limits you to 280 characters, meaning you have to be clever with what you

write and how you describe yourself. To create an ‘about you’ description, as seen

below, you will need to go on to your profile > click edit profile in the right-hand

corner > and fill in a short description; your location; your website; and set a colour

scheme for your account.

Below are examples of both Wales Cooperative description and a Cowshed example

of how to edit a profile.

5) You can see how many people you’re following, and how many people follow you

across the top of your profile under your cover photo.

6) Your profile can be accessed by clicking on the icon of your profile picture across the

top of Twitter. You can also access the ‘Homepage’ where you’ll see all the tweets

from everyone you follow; the ‘moments’ section with relevant news stories and

popular Tweets; the ‘notifications’ centre where you’ll get updates on anyone who’s

followed/retweeted/liked your posts; and messages where people you follow and

who follow you back can privately message you. To send a new tweet, press the tweet

button in the right hand corner.

Page 9: How to set up your social media channels...with on LinkedIn. For a beginner’s page, you will only need to use the below two and most likely only ‘designated admin’: Designated

7) Your tweet must meet 280 characters and through this you can add; links; photos;

video; GIFs; location; polls. To use a hashtag just put the hashtag followed by the

word, with no spaces e.g. #Care2Cooperate

8) To add a picture or video you will click on the mountain icon, and select the file you

want to upload from your computer. You can then tag people in the photo. This can

be relevant people who you want to see your tweets and who you want to engage

with.

Page 10: How to set up your social media channels...with on LinkedIn. For a beginner’s page, you will only need to use the below two and most likely only ‘designated admin’: Designated

/

9) To add a video, you do the same again and select the video. If you want, you can

‘trim’ the video down to make it shorter if you don’t want it to be too long. Just move

the toolbar below along.

10) Your Twitter homepage will look similar to this and will bring up tweets, retweets and

likes of those you follow. It will also show ‘trending hashtags’ in your area, as well as

suggestions on who to follow based on your own followers and the people you

already follow.

LinkedIn

1) Much like Facebook, you must first have a personal LinkedIn account to set up a

LinkedIn page. You can do this on the LinkedIn website by giving your email, name

and information.

2) When you’ve set up your personal page, you can then move on to your work page.

This can be accessed in the top right-hand corner under the ‘work’ icon. You will then

select ‘create a company page’.

Page 12: How to set up your social media channels...with on LinkedIn. For a beginner’s page, you will only need to use the below two and most likely only ‘designated admin’: Designated

Verify, and click create page.

4) You will then see your blank page where you will need to insert both a ‘profile

picture’ and a ‘cover image’. This should be consistent with the ones you have on

both Facebook and Twitter.

Page 13: How to set up your social media channels...with on LinkedIn. For a beginner’s page, you will only need to use the below two and most likely only ‘designated admin’: Designated

is you do and have to offer, much like your Facebook description.

6) You can then make your page more specific by selecting your company size; industry;

year founded; company type; office location (this can be more than one).

Page 14: How to set up your social media channels...with on LinkedIn. For a beginner’s page, you will only need to use the below two and most likely only ‘designated admin’: Designated

9) You will then see the below roles and can assign them to people you’re connected

with on LinkedIn. For a beginner’s page, you will only need to use the below two and

most likely only ‘designated admin’:

Designated admin: allows employees to make edits to your company page,

add other admins, and post updates.

Direct sponsored content poster: allows marketers at your company to share

content on the newsfeed.

10) To write a post, you go on to either your newsfeed or page and fill in the box at the

the image, or the video icon and this inserts a video.

page.

4) Then you will need to add a category for your profile, this can be ‘companies and

organisations’, also, you can add contact options such as phone and email.

website URL; and a short sentence or slogan about what it is that you do.
