• Is reading a skill that I develop and enhance in classes or is it an activity sts do in classes?
• Do I prepare pre, while and post activities when there is a reading in the lesson?
• Do I teach them strategies to understand the reading?
• Do I really TEACH them how to read comprehensively?
Why do we read?
• To enlarge our vocabulary• To learn from other’s
experiences• For getting new information• For entertainment • To improve my writing skills

How to prepare a reading class
• Teach punctuation and intonation• Tell them why they are reading this
and not that• Teach them previously to highlight
and underline the important information
• Always plan the pre reading activities to engage them and facilitate their comprehension
• Answer questions to check comprehension without looking at the text (paraphrasing)
• Make reading part of your monthly lesson plan, prepare a reading class once a month
Reading activities
• Predicting the end• Inferring from a title• Summarizing the text• Evaluating and questioning what we
have read• KWL chart:What we knowWhat we want to knowWhat we have learned
Reading principles
• Encourage sts to read as much and as often as possible
• Sts need to be engaged to what they are reading
• Prediction is a major factor in reading as well as expectation, motivate them presenting the book in an interesting way
• Match the reading to the general topic
• Consider their level and time, challenge them
• Good teachers exploit reading texts to the full
