    Introduction

From the parking lot, I could see the towers of the castle of the Magic Kingdom standing stately against theblue sky. To the right, t he tall peak of The Matterhorn rose even hi gher. From the left, I could hear the junglesounds of Adventureland. As I entered the gate, Main Street stretched before me with its quaint shops evokingan old-fashioned small town so charming it could never have existed. I was entranced. Disneyland may havebeen built for children, but it brings out the child in adults. (TS)

ConclusionI thought I would spend a few hoursat Disneyland, but here I was at1:00 A.M., closing time, leaving thefront gates with the now darktowers of the Magic Kingdom

behind me. I could see tiredchildren, toddling along andstruggling to keep their eyes openas best they could. Others slept intheir parents' arms as we waited forthe parking lot tram that would takeus to our cars. My forty-year-oldfeet ached, and I felt a bit sad tothink that in a couple of days Iwould be leaving California, myvacation over, to go back to my

desk. But then I smiled to think thatfor at least a day I felt ten years old

Note that a summary is accompaniedby a final comment that rounds off

the paper and brings the discussion toa close. This combination of a

summary and a final thought is themost common method of concluding

    an essay. =)

A question grabs the readersattention. It is a direct appeal to

your reader to think further aboutwhat you have written. A question

should follow logically from thepoints you have already made in

    the essay.

#2: Include a thought-provokingquestion or short series of questions.

  • 7/27/2019 How to Write Conclusions and Titles

    10/25

A question must deal with oneof these areas:

    A. Why the subject of yourpaper is important.

    B. What might happen in thefuture

    C. What should be done aboutthis subject

    D. Which choice should bemade

#2: Include a thought-provokingquestion or short series of questions.

In your conclusion, you may provide an

EXAMPLE:Campaign advertisements should help us understand the candidate's qualificationsand positions on the issues. Instead, most tell us what a boob or knave theopposing candidate is, or they present general images of the candidate as a familyperson or God-fearing American. Do such advertisements contribute to creating aninformed electorate or a people who choose political leaders the same way theychoose soft drinks and soap?

Looking to the future can emphasizethe importance of your paper or

redirect the readers' thoughtprocess. It may help them apply the

new information to their lives or seethings more globally.

    Like questions,predictions and

    recommendationsalso involve yourreaders. A prediction

states what mayhappen in the future.

EXAMPLE:Without well-qualified teachers, schools are little more thanbuildings and equipment. If higher-paying careers continue toattract the best and the brightest students, there will not onlybe a shortage of teachers, but the teachers available may nothave the best qualifications. Our youth will suffer. And when

    youth suffers, the future suffers.

A title is usually a briefsummary of what your paper

is about. It is often no morethan several words. You mayfind it easier to write the title

    after you have completed yourpaper.

    What is a TITLE?

  • 7/27/2019 How to Write Conclusions and Titles

    18/25

What is the tone of the project? Ifthis is a serious paper, don't be too

silly or off-the-wall with your title. If it isa personal essay, meant to be funny or

a little strange, it's ok to title youressay in a different manner. But the

title should match the tone of theessay.

    Tips on WritingTitles

  • 7/27/2019 How to Write Conclusions and Titles

    19/25

Pull out a few keywords that sum up yourpaper. After you have your keywords, brainstorm some

ideas around them. Do the three words fit together? That could work well. Are they jarringly different? That

could work well too. Do they remind you of anotherword that sums up the whole idea? Spend a few

    minutes brainstorming.

    Tips on WritingTitles

    20/25

Find a quote that matches one theme or central idea of your essayor paper, if applicable. You can type the word into a search engine alongwith the word quote and check out a few quote web pages. Then take a

fragment of the quote to use. You could also use a song lyric ifappropriate. If it is a book report, take a fragment of a thought-

provoking quote from the book itself. For a paper on Macbeth, try "Toil

and trouble: Murder and intrigue in Macbeth".

    21/25

Use a startling, interesting or surprisingimage paired with your keywords to get the reader'sattention and make them curious about your paper,

but make sure it's appropriate. If your paper is about avolcano, try "The day the earth bled: The eruption ofMount Vesuvius" or for the fall of Constantinople, you

could try "The last king's folly: The final battle ofConstantinople".

    Tips on WritingTitles

    22/25

Try to find a cliche thatyou could re-workand

say in a new way for your

essay for a clever effect. How about "Fit to be tried:

    The battle over gay

    marriage in the courts".

Try some clever word play for yourtitle such as a double entendre that could applyto your paper. For a paper about missionaries in

West Africa during the colonial period, try"Prophets or profits: The European colonial

invasion of West Africa". Or how about"Understanding and overstanding: Predatory

    lending and debt."

Ask someone else for help if youare still having trouble. Have them

read over your paper and ask them ifit makes them think of any song

lyrics, movie titles or TV shows orquotes. If not, ask them to sum up thepaper in three words and use those to

    build your title.

Sum up your paper in three words or sumup your thesis. Use those three words to buildyour title, put a colon and then just state what

your paper is about. Jared Diamond's 1997 booktitle basically just summed up his thesis

statement. "Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fatesof Human Societies" and it's a best seller.
