How to Write Emails That SellStep 1: Know Your Product

Start by taking out a sheet of paper. Now, write down all the facts about your product. What does it do?Put down the not-so-great things too, this is for your eyes only.

Example – Wind Up Flashlight...

● Has a high-tech LED lamp● Uses a hand crank generator to make power● Waterproof housing● Goes dim pretty fast, have to keep cranking

Now here's what you do...

Writing Down Benefits

Next to each thing, write down the corresponding "benefits."

This is just how the product helps the customer.

An easy way to start... tack on "so" after each fact, and finish the sentence.

In the book I'm going to tell you about in a sec, you'll learn how to take those benefits... and create a "big benefit" that makes a perfect subject line or website headline...

For any product or service!

And in the process massively improve your sales and website conversion rate. But more on that later.

First...

Example Benefits

First I want to show you my benefits for the wind-up flashlight.

● Has a high tech LED lamp so... ● you never need to worry about bulbs burning out, or the bulb breaking● and it stays lit using less power so you need to crank much less than the competition's flashlight

● Uses a hand crank generator so...● you never need to find batteries or worry about them going dead● no matter what happens you'll always be able to light your way

● Waterproof housing so.. ● you never have to worry about the flashlight going dead because it got soaked● you can use it in wet places (like in a pouring rainstorm on the highway)

● Goes dim pretty fast and you have to keep cranking so.. ● you get plenty of exercise ● your hands stay warm if you're using the flashlight in freezing weather

The last one, well, maybe don't use that...

But keep it "on file."

Why? That's easy...

Why Write Down The Bad Parts Too?

Figuring out possible objections is an important part of selling.

If someone thinks "this flashlight sounds great, but I'm not sure I want to have to keep cranking"...

You have to overcome that objection in your sales messages before they will buy!

Pointing out that this flashlight contains new technology... that requires less cranking than any other "self powering" flashlight... would be a good way to do that.

Now that you have your benefits, there's still something you have to do.

Step 2: Know Your Customer

Look at who your customers are... who you're writing to.

Create, in your mind, a mental picture of your "average customer."

Are you selling to Average Joes, guys like Homer Simpson? Then, as you write, keep Homer in mind... write to him, in language he'll understand.

You don't write the same way to your sister and your boss, do you?

When you write to your boss, you've got a picture of him in your head. Maybe a white shirt and tie, cup of coffee on his desk.

That changes how you write...

Step 2: Know Your Customer Continued

Do the visualizing thing with your customer... and go into detail.

Maybe he's bored at work, a pile of papers up to "here", checking email so he can put off looking at them...

Really get a good picture.

Maybe he's a 40 something guy that enjoys shaving every morning and spends extra for a good belt.

Or maybe she's 35, loves jogging, and keeps cute pictures all over her cubicle.

Don't worry about being accurate. You can imagine a woman and still get sales from men, etc. The point is to give your email a "human" touch that people respond to...

...about 1000% more than they respond to "sales-robot-speak!"

And there's more...
