Get inspiration from plenty of other sources whether it’s through stories you’re read, quotes, real-life events, and interesting people. Research is important!

• Blend together these ideas to help create an original idea of your own! For example, an orphaned child such as Harry Potter who learns of magic, love, and friendship.

Main character:• Has a need or conflict.• Has the capability to resolve conflict whether or

not he/she is aware of it.• Usually has a flaw in his/her character that needs

to be overcome to resolve conflict and attain triumph.

Secondary characters (both friends and enemies):

For example:

• Partner/s – assists main characters in achieving goal (e.g. Robin to Batman)

• Mentor/s – wise character helping main character to achieve goal (e.g. Ursula to Ariel)

• Joker – brings laughs to the story (e.g. Donkey to Shrek)

Tips:• Create a significant theme. Allow it to emerge

slowly as the story unfolds.• Know how the story ends before you write the

story.• Your main character should be the only character

(no last minute heroes) to provide result to the plot’s end, and one who develops in character by overcoming certain obstacles in the plot.

• To make interesting characters, give them vibrant, likable personalities. E.g. Hagrid to Harry Potter, Mike to Sully in Monsters, Inc.

• To make interesting conflicts, come up with a handful.

• The bigger the conflict, the better the story. Come up with several obstacles for the main character to overcome through adventure where reward and learning is waiting at the end.

• Person vs. person• Person vs. self• Person vs. nature

Plot is the succession of events working around the character and conflict, the two most important parts.• Plot is based on cause and effect• Plot ripples the choices and actions main character makes• Events should affect each other, each with important chain link effects

Plot Stages:• Arrival of conflict • Initial success of main character• Reversals• Final victory• Outcome

Scenes or events are the plot that helps make an excellent story. Keep it as simple as possible.

Points to remember:• In narration, pick which is the best voice to use, whether first or third

person.• Beginning, middle, and end should transition connectedly,

chronologically. No flashbacks.• Picture books require adequate scenes to bring out variety of

illustration. • Dialogue is key. Dialogue should reveal the type of characters, dialogue

should develop plot, and dialogue should create lively scenarios. • Always begin a new paragraph each time a new character speaks. Don’t

worry about space.

• Be actionable – The character should evoke a certain characteristic. For example, Greg was cowardly. Later on Greg overcomes his cowardice by facing a villain he beats and saves the village.

• Keep the scenes appropriate. For example, if a less important event occurs, make it short, or if a life-altering event happens, make it dramatic.

Dialogue, style and tone tips• Keep it the pace brief and in short paragraphs.• Avoid cutesy, sentimental, or even lofty writing.• Match the tone of the book to the story’s atmosphere. • Avoid lengthy narrations. Cut them into smaller pieces instead.• Children’s books are best when written with poetic devices like

alliteration and repetition. • Do not make too long a greeting or goodbyes as these are unnecessary.• Reveal persona through effective diction of character.• Avoid replacing action with dialogue. For example, in your story there is

a fire. Don’t write your character to simply say “Help, there’s a fire!”

Setting• Know your setting. Know it like the main character. • Have a clear picture of the setting in your mind down to the smallest

detail. The setting adds atmosphere to you story’s scenes.

Begin with a bang• The first day for the character should be fired up. Make it an

adventurous one, with as much excitement your imagination can create.

• Reveal the protagonist, including the conflict, or at least provide some hint about the conflict of the story.

• Use action to ignite your story, allowing readers to look forward to the next page and the next.

Before writing, make sure you have the character, conflict, scenes, and beginning properly thought out. The draft will contain all the ideas you have. Don’t worry about making it perfect because you can always go back and fix what needs revising later on.

Fixing grammatical errors and other slips is a given. However be sure that your story is glued in place.

• Is the character solid? • Can it reveal its greatest strengths as well as

flaws? • Does the conflict have a strong resolution? • What are the important values the reader can

learn at the end?
