We have set a bold coarse for 2020, a year to promote the value of the arts through the lens of advocacy and inclusion. This issue gives you an overview of what’s coming and also highlights the Arts Council’s priorities moving forward. The Arts & Access Always program plays a significant role in advocating and creating opportunities to engage persons with disabilities, the fastest growing minority in the region. The AEP 6 Study provides numerical evidence that cultural nonprofits generate jobs, taxes and audiences.

Additionally, there are grant opportunities, professional development seminars, and public forums—all intended to attract more voices and broaden the conversation.

Cultural Accessibility Invites CommunityAccess Grants WorkshopIncentive Grants for Greater Inclusion is a matching grants program that encourages cultural nonprofits to produce disability friendly events. There are three distinct grant categories for consideration:

1) Offering an accommodation2) Contracting an artist with a disability3) Conducting an artist residency for persons with a disability.

A free workshop to explain the guidelines and eligibility requirements will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 from 4:00-5:30pm, at the Center for Vision Loss, 845 West Wyoming Street, Allentown. It is mandatory for applicants to attend the workshop or submit a letter of intent by February 10th. Deadline for grant submission: March 15, 2020

Profesional Development: Audio Description

Champions ReturnsThe Champions of Inclusion trade fair showcases “best practices” and local, state and federal resources that can help an organization better serve persons with disabilities. Micah D. Fowler, an American actor with cerebral palsy, will deliver the keynote address. Fowler is most known for his roles in Labor Day and as JJ DiMeo in the television series Speechless. Join us in celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and ensuring that more artists with disabilities appear on our stages and in our galleries. The event will take place on Tuesday, July 21st at the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts, from 1:00 to 4:30pm.

This eighteen-month study will begin on September 1, 2020. Organized every five years by Americans for the Arts, the Arts Council will once again gather data from the Lehigh Valley in order to measure the economic impact of our local nonprofit arts industry. The study will also identify trends in the sector—notably, attendance figures.

Cultural accessibility continues to grow in the Lehigh Valley. It is estimated that nearly 600 persons with disabilities participated in arts experiences last year. Add an accompanied friend or a family member to those numbers and the totals begin to suggest a greater awareness about the challenges this community faces. A case in point, five years ago no one was offering a sensory friendly environment for kids with autism to attend a children’s play. Last year there were five theatres who offered such accommodations. As we move toward greater inclusion, I look forward to seeing more artists with disabilities on our stages and in our galleries.

One Last Thought

—› The Arts deeply nourish the soul of a community. Supporting them requires an ongoing dialogue about the value and impact of art in our lives.

Visit PPA Projects Around Town• WYCA Bethlehem -– Creative Aging, music and

visual arts experiences for seniors with limited access to the arts, Spring 2020, Bethlehem.

“Art makes better humans, art is necessary in understanding the world and art makes people happy. Undeniably, art is not optional.”
