Of all the ways to make money online, Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest ways for someone to get started in their own business. Not only is it easy to get started, it's possible to make a lot of money exclusively as an affiliate marketer. Affiliate marketing is essentially referring leads to another company, such as a manufacturer or service provider in return for a fee. In some cases this can be as simple as getting people to provide their e-mail address in return for a trial offer or free information. Most commonly though. It involves hitching our products, and when a prospect clicks on a product or product link to buy, they are passed through to the provider's order form, and you get paid a percentage of the sales price for every referral who buys the given product or service. In essence, you are offering someone else's products, and earning a a commission every time someone buys.

It is relatively easy to start an affiliate business. One way is to build a website - or use an existing website (if applicable) - and then join some of the hundreds of affiliate programs that are available on the Internet. You can even use a free blog, such as those@blogger.com, or Word press.com, and simply post reviews of the affiliate products or programs you are marketing. Even simpler than that, you can run PPC (pay per click) ads pitching the affiliate products, and never even have to bother with a website. Many affiliate programs will even provide you with a ready-made website.

About the hardest part of a silly marketing is choosing from a dizzying array of affiliate for grams. When choosing an affiliate program, it's wise to choose one that is proven (i.e. the company behind the program - known as the "merchant" - has a track record of selling its products and services), that offers a decent fee, and that is relevant to your target market. In other words, you only want to promote products and services that your web visitors are likely to buy. If you don't already have a web business, then you'll take the reverse approach: you'll only choose to target visitors who are likely to be interested in your affiliate offers. Most affiliate programs cost nothing to join.

Once you've joined some affiliate programs you need to promote them! This is actually the bulk of running an affiliate marketing business. This may involve running ads or publishing "advertorial" content that includes the merchant's affiliate links. The idea is to entice web visitors to click on those links so that they buy the merchant's products... and you earn commission.

A common approach used successfully by many Internet marketers is to send emails to their subscribers. These emails include some relevant worthwhile copy, along with the affiliate link you are promoting. As a rule of thumb, it's better to write your own copy rather than simply use the promotional text provided by merchants. Your readers are more likely to regard your recommendation more favorably if it clearly sounds as though it's coming from you.

Some of the most profitable affiliate programs are in the mortgage, web hosting, dating, and education markets. Mortgage sites can pay up to $75 per lead, even if the visitor does not end up getting a loan with them. Although such commissions are particularly high in such markets, there is typically a lot of competition for leads in these markets too. So, when deciding on what affiliate programs - and market niche - you want to work in, don't simply consider how much various programs pay. Keep in mind, you may make much more money from lower paying programs that simply generate more sales, then high commission programs where you have fewer sales.

Affiliate marketing can be extremely lucrative and satisfying. Do your research and find out as much as you can about this exciting field. And when it comes to choosing programs to promote, think about your capacity to generate enough qualified leads and "pre-sell" them on the affiliate offers you promote.
