Howard Preseason Development and Preparation Camp 8/16 - 8/19 Head Staff Members: Shawn Grant Coach Grant is entering his second season as Hockey Director and Head Goalie Coach for the Howard Huskies. Prior, he coached three seasons as a Head Coach for Team Maryland as well as teaching lessons through Wolfe Hockey Development. Before moving to Maryland, Coach Grant worked as Volunteer Assistant Coach for Clarkson University men’s team for 5 seasons and 2 seasons with Clarkson’s women’s team (3-time NCAA Champions). Coach Grant’s additional collegiate coaching experience include 1 season as the Assistant Men’s Hockey Coach at Neumann College, 1 season as the Assistant Women’s Hockey Coach at SUNY Potsdam, and 2 seasons as the Assistant Men’s Hockey Coach at SUNY Potsdam. Coach Grant also coached youth hockey in his hometown of Potsdam, NY for 7 years, which included helping lead the Potsdam Icestorm U16 girls’ team to back-to-back State Championships (2013 & 2014) and finished 2nd at USA Nationals in 2013 and 3rd at the USA Nationals in 2014. Coach Grant left Potsdam, NY his senior year of high school and attended Northwood School (Lake Placid, NY) for 2 years. During his post-graduate year, he was voted by coaches and players as an Assistant Captain and was voted as MVP of the team, and selected to participate in the Hockey Night in Boston All-Scholastic Tournament. During his postgraduate year, Grant also travelled and played Jr. B for the Char-Lan Rebels (Williamstown, ON). Following that season, Coach Grant played Junior A for the Cornwall Colts (Cornwall, ON), leading the league in save percentage (.910) and the second lowest goals against average (3.05). Coach Grant was recruited, and lived his lifelong dream, to play NCAA Division 1 hockey, in his hometown, for Clarkson University. During the 1998-1999 season, Grant set the school record for most wins by a Freshman goaltender (25), won the ECAC regular season championship, and posted his career high of 46 saves in the team’s 3-2 win over arch rival St. Lawrence University in the ECAC Championship game, in front of 8,469 fans in Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, NY. It was the second largest crowd for a hockey game in the arena, trailing the 1980 Olympic game between USA and Russia. During his freshman season, Grant was voted by teammates and coaches as Clarkson’s Rookie-of-the-Year and was named to the ECAC All- Rookie Team. During his Junior season, doctors recommended that he stop playing hockey due to severe knee injuries. Coach Grant finished his collegiate hockey career with a record of 37-20-5, .894 save percentage, 2.89 goals against average, and 2 shutouts.

Shawn Grant

Coach Grant is entering his second season as Hockey Director and Head Goalie Coach for the

Brad Powell

Coach Powell has coached for two season as head coach of the Calvert Hall Cardinals. Coach Powell came to the Hall with an extensive playing background in New England, a championship pedigree, mentoring from some of the top coaches in the sport, and significant coaching experience in the Baltimore youth level. Growing up in Hartford, CT, Coach Powell began playing ice hockey at the age of 5. Coming up through grade school, he played for a number of local clubs in central Connecticut including Avon Youth Hockey. In his freshman year of high school, Brad played on the varsity at Cohasset H.S., outside of Boston. In the next three years (1998-2000), he played junior hockey for the Bay State Breakers of the USPHL, led by David McCauley. The Bay State Breakers program has sent more than 160 players to the collegiate level. Brad played four years (2001-2004) for head coach Mike McShane at Norwich University in Vermont, a Division III ice hockey power. McShane, who previously coached at St. Lawrence and Providence, retired last season as the seventh winningest coach in NCAA history (742 wins and four National Titles). The Norwich Cadets won four consecutive ECAC East Championships, they played in three straight Frozen Fours, and recorded a combined record of 96-21-1 during Brad’s years on the team. In Brad’s junior season (2003), he and his teammates won the National Championship. Two of his teammates from Norwich later played in the NHL – Keith Aucoin and Kurtis McLean. Brad graduated from Norwich in 2004 with a Bachelor’s in Physical Education, with a minor in Coaching. For the past 14 years he has been the sales manager for Cap World in Laurel. Brad began his coaching career with the Baltimore Youth Hockey Club in 2011. He coached BYHC’s club teams for six seasons, moving from Squirt to Bantam. In the fall of 2017, Brad Powell was hired as Calvert Hall’s new Varsity head coach, taking over an acclaimed program that has won five MIAA Championships and a MAPHL Title in the prior decade. Coach Powell is entering his 5th season coaching for the Howard Huskies. Brad and his wife Erin live in Canton with their twin boys Frank and Brad.

Matt Powers

Coach Powers currently coaches U16AA and U12A for Howard Huskies. He grew up in

Columbia, Maryland, went to school at Sandy Spring Friends School, and played for the

Huskies for his entire youth hockey career.

After playing a year in college for Mount St. Mary's University, he signed with the Jersey

Shore Wildcats of the NA3HL with the ability to move to the Wichita Falls Wildcats in the

NAHL. During his time in New Jersey, he suffered his eighth concussion and made a

decision with his doctors to stop playing.

After his playing career ended, he began coaching at the Bullis School in Potomac, MD

and private training. He is a middle school educator in Maryland, and he applies his

education background to his coaching style. Teaching, coaching, and spreading the

love of the game of hockey are his passions. After the Bullis School, Coach Powers

started coaching for the Howard High School Varsity and JV teams. After a successful

year at Howard High, Coach Powers began coaching for the Howard Huskies.

This will be his third year as a head coach with the club. He coached the Columbia

Clippers spring teams this past spring and won the first championship in Clippers history

with the Clippers Squirt White team. Coach Powers was recently named "Coach of the

Year" for the 2020-2021 season for the Club.

Kalie Grant:

Grant is 2020 graduate from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York where she played hockey at the NCAA Division I level. She served as the assistant captain and captain her junior and senior seasons, respectively. In her four-year career, Grant finished with 138 games played scoring 13 goals and racking up 31 assists. During her time at St. Lawrence, Grant was presented with the Andrea Blakely Scholar Athlete Award four times and was named an ACHA All-American Scholar during the 2018-19 season. Her other awards include being appointed the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team award four times, was selected as an ECAC Hockey Commissioners' Honoree, as the program's top scholar, and was elected a finalist for the Mandi Schwartz Student-Athlete of the Year finalist twice. Prior to attending St. Lawrence, Grant served as captain of the Nepean Jr. Wildcats. Grant was selected to attend the USA Hockey National Camp three times. Grant played a large leadership role as the captain of the hockey, soccer and lacrosse teams at Potsdam High School. Grant was selected to First-Team All-Northern and league MVP in hockey and lacrosse, Second-Team All-Northern in soccer. Currently, Grant serves as the Assistant Coach of the NCAA Women’s team at Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan. During her first year of coaching in 2020-2021, Grant helped lead the team to an undefeated 20-0-1 season and the program’s sixth straight SLAATS Cup Championship. She will be returning to Adrian College for the 2021-2022 season. Grant has also worked the Can/Am Hockey School in Lake Placid, New York and the College Hockey Showcase in Estero, Florida. Grant graduated as valedictorian of Potsdam High School, while also traveling over 2 hours, 4 to 5 times a week, to play Junior A hockey in Canada for the Nepean Wildcats. Kalie is the niece of Howard Hockey Director, Shawn Grant.
