THE GAME: This is the opening round of the Gotham Classic featuring the Bison of Howard University from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Spiders of the University of Richmond from the Atlantic 10. The Bison (5-5) are coming off of a hard fought, 61-39 loss against North Carolina Central on Sunday while the Spiders (3-4) dropped a tough 61-56 road decision to James Madison.
THE COACHES: Howard is coached by Kevin Nickelberry (Virginia Wesleyan, ‘86), who is in his fifth year and has 36-99 record to date. Nickelberry’s overall record is 126-173 in 10-plus years as a head coach. Richmond is coached by Chris Mooney (Princeton, ’94) who is in his 10th year there and has 169-136 record to date. Mooney's overall coaching record is 182-144.
SERIES RECORD: This is the first matchup between the two teams.
FOLLOW THE ACTION: The game will be broadcast on CSN+ and will be joined in progress. Bob Black will provide play by play and Greg Beckwith the color commentary. DEFENSE AND REBOUNDING: The Bison are getting strong rebounding from James “JC” Carlton, Marcel Boyd and Oliver Ellison to the tune of a 42-33 advantage in seven games. The trio has helped Howard record 30 blocked shots this season. The Bison pressure defense has forced over 8 steals per game, ranking them 17th nationally.
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS: Richmond is 3-0 at home this season. The Spiders are being out-rebounded, 33-27 on the season. Three of Richmond’s losses have been by six points or less. The Spiders’ opponents are shooting 45 percent from the field. Richmond has done a good job taking care of the ball and are averaging only 10 turnovers per game, ranking them 8th in the country. NEXT UP: Following this game, the Bison will continue play in the Gotham Classic when they host IUPUI on Monday at 6 pm in Burr Gymnasium. The Spiders will host South Alabama in the next round of the Classic on December 18 at 7 pm.

Kevin NickelberryHoward University Head CoachKevin Nickelberry enters his fifth seasonas head coach of the Howard Universitymen’s basketball team. During the past fourseasons, Nickelberry has begun to build theprogram back to respectability. Regardedas one of the top recruiters in America,Nickelberry put together one of the toprecruiting classes in school history lastseason, featuring nine freshmen. Includedin that class was James “J-Bird” Daniel, thefreshman phenom who set the college gameon fire with his prolific scoring and wasnamed the MEAC Rookie of the Year and isthe 2014-15 MEAC Preseason Player of theYear. With the outstanding class in tow, theHoward University men’s basketballprogram under Nickelberry is prime toestablish itself as one of the tops in theMEAC. Prior to coming to Howard, Nickel-berry served as the head coach of the LibyaNational Basketball team. Before that, hewas head coach at Hampton Universityfrom 2006-09. During his three year tenurewith the Pirates, Nickelberry helped guidehis teams to 20 non-conference wins. Hecollected 49 Division 1 wins during thatperiod to rank second among MEACschools. Before Hampton, he was an assistant at Clemson and made an impact on theprogram there during his tenure from 2003-06 when he recruited nine players on theTigers’ 2007-08 and 2008-09 NCAA
Tournament teams. Before that, Nickelberry was the assistant coach at UNC Charlotte for two seasons. Over that period in 2001-03, he helpeddevelop Eddie Basden, the second player inConference USA history to win Player ofthe Year and Defensive Player of the Yearawards in the same season. Nickelberry also contributed to successful programs at Holy Cross and Monmouth. For his efforts, Nickelberry was rated among the Top 25 “Up-and-Coming” college basketball coaches by The Sporting Newsand Hoopscooponline.com in 2008.Nickelberry began his coaching careeras the head women’s basketball coach atColumbia Union College in 1991 andmoved to Howard University for fourseasons, from 1994-98. While at Howard,he played a role in the recruitment of backto-back MEAC Rookies of the Year. During his time in the coachingranks,the versatile Nickelberry worked in allareas, including recruiting, fundraising,marketing and public relations. Nickelberryhas become active in the Washington, DCcommunity due to his campaign for Stop theBullying among youth.The Kevin Nickelberry basketball camp hasalso shown tremendous growth during histenure at Howard, featuring youth from allover the District of Columbia/Maryland/Virginia area.Nickelberry graduated from VirginiaWesleyan in 1986 with a Bachelor of Artsdegree in communications. He and his wife,Mamie have two sons, Kyan and Kelby.
