The wind comes up from the south west, tailing the Gulf Stream, making its way over the North Atlantic. Fitzroy, Sole, Fastnet, Lundy, Irish Sea: the shipping forecast followed like a roadmap. Picking up moisture all the way. Pausing for a last drink in Cardigan Bay before it heaves up over the Cambrian Mountains.

The air cools. Raindrops form and fall on grass, rock, sheep and a biker or two. The mountaintops drain into pools, like this one: Llyn Teifi. From here flows the River Teifi, sometimes this way, sometimes that, forever downhill, through our back garden, seventy-five miles into Cardigan Bay.

The river’s been here a lot longer than we have. Maybe there was something it could teach us. So we went out and watched and listened and followed the river from source to sea.

This jacket took us on a bit of an expedition.

We wanted to make the perfect shell jacket for what Michael Fish calls ‘changeable’ weather. You know the kind, one minute it’s raining, dull and cloudy with a chilly wind, next minute the sun is out and and you’re getting baked. It can spoil your ride if you’re not wearing the correct kit for it.

This jacket needed to be lightweight, highly waterproof, yet highly breathable all at the same time. A tall order really.

So first we looked at �-Layer shell fabrics. They had the water resistance we were looking for, but they felt a bit like sticky plastic next to the skin.

Then we looked at 3-Layer shell fabrics. That extra lining helped stop the jacket feeling clammy, but it really affected the fabric’s ventilation. We also found them a bit too bulky.

We needed to find a balance.Then we discovered this �.�-Layer fabric. It uses an extra coating on the inner surface of the fabric instead of a lining. This nifty little coating increases air circulation and ventilation without affecting the breathability, so it helps channel moisture away from the skin so it can evaporate.

And we have designed the jacket to maximise ventilation. It comes with long welded pockets on either side that go into mesh body pockets.

My day will start at �am, on the boat at three. If it’s calm it’s the best time of the day, if it’s rough, it’s the worst.

I go out seven days a week, the only thing that prevents me is the weather. There was a day when the wheel house was ripped off by a wave just near Cardigan Island. I only fish Cardigan Bay. No more than 1� miles off shore – 6 miles to the East and 6 miles to the West. Mandy (my wife) and I are a team. She gets up at two as well to make my sandwiches and to see me off. She also dresses the crabs and sells fish.

My catch goes where I can sell it. We sell any mackerel and bass we get locally. The majority of the shellfish goes abroad though. Some goes to France, some to Spain and some to Portugal. There is a big demand for shellfish in Spain all year round. It gets transported in articulated lorries with saltwater tanks. They are then sold live in the markets. It’s only in this

country that we buy shellfish already packaged up and not alive any more. There are three articulated lorry loads a week leaving Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion and at least five lorries in the summer.

I was getting £1.00 a kilo for spider crabs three weeks ago, now they are £1.80. Brown crab costs £1.00 a kilo all year round except for at Easter and Christmas, when the price trebles – traditionally they eat shelfish in Spain and Portugal around this time, it’s only here that we eat turkey. Prawns are the main catch in the winter though. The worse the weather, the sooner they arrive. The rougher the sea, the more we catch.

The fish count is probably still the same as what it has always been, it is just the number of fishermen that has increased. Spider crab has increased and the brown crab has declined. Over the last five years our main brown crab fishery has become

extinct and has now been taken over by spider crab fishery. Ten years ago they developed ‘super crabbers’ (boats). In bad weather the small boats can’t go out and fish, but nothing stops the super crabbers, I think they have driven the market down.

If Cardigan Bay was a cake it would be split into 1� slices (one for each fishing boat), if there are less boats your slice is big – it’s as simple as that. At the moment there are 1� boats fishing out of Cardigan, really speaking, there is a good living for about four. It’s not a cheap business either. I have �00 lobster pots that cost £�0 each, they last about five years.

I love the fishing. It started out as a hobby with a line and rod on the river and it was a natural progression to the sea. Once I caught my first lobster I was hooked (his pun not ours).

Breaking bones really sucks, the initial mind blowing pain of a good break can be way too much to take as you lie on the ground writhing in an uncompromising agony. On occasions I’ve honestly wished that someone would shoot me as I’ve been encompassed by indescribable pain. Sometimes you’re pretty sure something’s bust but adrenaline can get you to the end of the race. Always though, denial kicks in, it’ll be “a bad sprain” or “I think I’ve got away with that”, nothing will ever let you admit to yourself you might be sitting in a pot for the next six weeks or more until you hear it from the horse’s, or doctors more appropriately, mouth.

That news always hits me hard, so hard it’s one of the only things in adulthood to make me well up on a regular basis; I find it utterly crushing to know another season is to go by while I sit in front of a telly. Life is severely disrupted but nothing compares to the feeling of knowing that months, years even, of preparation are shot down in a millisecond and, while you get fatter and slower the rest of your sporting world marches on regardless, leaving you behind again. Every time I get hurt some clever soul (usually my old man) always gives it, “aren’t you getting too old for all this?” to which I reply with a shrug of the shoulders or a wry smile, while an indescribable rage fills me from the inside. To those people I ultimately feel sorrow as they clearly don’t know what life is about.

Wrap yourselves in cotton wool and never leave the house, what kind of existence is

that? I live for those moments of having a bike drifting around underneath me barely in my control, for those runs where I’m going so fast my focus leaves only a jigsaw of moments to piece together through a hazy cloud of euphoria. Days and weeks after a good race those feelings stay with me and make the ultimate ride worth almost the ultimate price.

Over the years I’ve smashed and broken this body of mine to pieces, five surgeries and counting, five broken ankles, a snapped leg, a wrecked knee, destroyed hips, wrecked back, broken hand, bust wrist, three times bust elbow, broken shoulder blade, a dozen broken ribs, separated my ribs from my spine, complete separation of my shoulder, severe nerve compression making my arm useless for two months, from prolapsing a disc in my neck and concussions that have left me with a recurring blindness in one eye and put on top of the chronic fatigue syndrome from the party lifestyle and you have to ask yourself was it all worth it? Well it was, and it still is cause I’m not ever going to stop and I’d do it all again and more because this is living, this is what it’s all about. There’s no point taking an immaculate corpse to the grave, make sure you’ve worn it out to the max, played hard in it and lived your life to the full because riding is life and the only thing that’ll slow you down is picking up the pieces after a big one.

We get it. You’re busy. Like, way too busy to read this.

But that’s the very time when you need to take time out.

So, that beautiful piece of singletrack that is an extra �0 minutes on your journey home is also your escape from day to day.

That deserted towpath that isn’t as quick as your normal way home is the thing that takes you to another place in your head.

And that big hill you meet on the long way home is your stress busting, mind clearing, perspective giving, you son-of-a-bitch I am going to beat ya, type-of-hill.

Like we said, we get it. We go there too.

So we just got to doodling on what a jacket for that journey would look like. And this is what we came up with.

It’s called the ‘long way home’ jacket (no surprises there).

Success is taking the long way home

Sure, all zips are waterproof, and the front hand pockets double up as vents. Around whole collar and front arm panels, it has Schoeller’s fabric called reflex which looks black in day light but becomes a large reflective area in the dark. But the real stand out thing about the jacket is it uses the bionic (sfx: six million dollar man music) C-Change™ membrane from Schoeller. It was voted ‘�006 Frost & Sullivan Award for product innovation of the year’.

It’s clever stuff. You see during activity, the structure of the C-Change™ membrane opens as body moisture levels rise. Excess heat can escape to the outside air. Which makes it great for those long rides home.

Correspondingly, when you’re cooling down, the structure of the membrane closes, retaining the heat directly at the body. And as you’d expect from us at howies the jacket is super light for the level of performance it can give you. But hey, you’ve been carrying enough baggage all day, right?

A lot of the water-resistant jackets out there have a certain design aesthetic.

They look super technical. They look like they could save your life in sub-zero temperatures or keep you dry in a howling blizzard.

This would be fine if you were hiking in the Himalayas, but they appear a little out of place when you’re just riding into work, popping to the shops, or going for a quick pint. They are a bit ‘loud’ for the normal stuff you do every day.

That’s why we use Epic cotton. You see it looks and feels just like...er, cotton. It looks like you are wearing a casual jacket. It’s understated. It’s subtle. It doesn’t look like it’s anything special.

But in fact, it is pretty special. Most water-resistant jackets rely on coatings, laminates or Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatments to provide water protection.

These techniques involve dipping the woven fabric in a chemical bath to treat the surface, which blocks the tiny holes in the fabric weave causing a loss in breathability. Whereas with Epic each individual cotton fibre is treated with a silicone polymer. This makes the fabric highly water-resistant and windproof, but just as importantly, it ensures that it is still breathable. Another thing we like about Epic is that it maintains its ability to be water-resistant, no matter how many times you wash it. Which is great when you consider that coatings such as DWR gradually wear off each time your jacket is washed.

Oh, and because of the way the fibres are coated, the jacket feels like cotton. It’s not stiff and it’s quiet (literally).

We know it performs, you know it performs. We just don’t believe in shouting about it.

The idea for this bag is a great one.

Its job is to get you home safe and sound. You see, cars respond to road signs. They lift their foot off the accelerator the moment they see one. They do it without thinking. If they thought this bag was a bike, they wouldn’t slow down. But because they think you’re a road-sign, they do.

Like I said, it’s a great idea.

Countless times I’ve heard cars behind me as I ride up the hill. They zoom around the bend, only to be met with this wobbling road sign in front of them. Then I hear them back off. It makes me smile each and every time.

The idea behind the bag came from our friends at Obble (www.obble.com). They believe in giving all their ideas away. It doesn’t make them any money but it wins them lots of friends. And in this case, it helps those friends get home safely. (My family love Obble.)

But looking at this 4-year-old bag right now, it hasn’t lasted so well. The road sign is hanging on by its last thread. The important bit of the bag that just might save your skin one day. As a company that believes in making products that last, we have to do better than this. Our reputation is on the line every time we make something. So we need to back those words up with good product.

That said, failure does make for a good teacher. It tells you how you can improve, if you have time to listen to it.

So we have been busy working on the new bag.Trying stuff. Testing stuff. Getting stuff right.This time the bag will be as strong as the idea it carries around with it. Promise.

There’s good cause to get up early during the autumn and winter months – I’m not talking about the crack of brunch, or just in time to catch the end of GMTV – I mean EARLY, like way before the sun comes up. When it’s a toss-up between setting the alarm clock for a few hours after you go to bed, or just staying awake all night. For a start, nobody else is up (apart from the milkman and the occasional dirty stop-out). It kind of feels like you’ve got the planet to yourself. There are no crowds, no commuters, no spluttering engines, just that dawn chorus of birdsong and the sound of your own footsteps.

It’s the point when the new day still thinks it’s last night and the eerie low light tells your body clock that you should be in bed. When the air is cold, crisp and fresh, and before it’s had the chance to get all polluted and smelly – it tastes like it’s just been exhaled from the lungs of the trees for you. Aaaaaah, you can’t beat that.

This jacket is designed for high-energy stuff.

You know those short but intense bursts of activity that create a lot of heat. The heat that creates the sweat that is the real enemy. For this kind of activity you need something that breathes like crazy.

Yup, you still need something that is shower-proof, but the real problem is the heat you create – not the rain.

And, yup you need it to be windproof (rule no1: whichever way you run or ride, the wind will be in your face).

But more than anything this kind of exercise requires the ultimate in breathability.

To work it has to get the sweat away from your body before you

cool down. Otherwise you will feel the ‘chill’ after an intense burst of activity.

A conventional jacket would have given us conventional results. This wasn’t the time to compromise.

Then we looked at this great fabric called soft shell.

It was made by an innovative Swiss company called Schoeller who had perfected a technology called 3XDry.

The 3XDry quickly repels any moisture and is highly breathable. The clever bit is that it removes the sweat from inside to the outside by what is called a push and pull technology.

This helps to prevent the ‘cool down’ because perspiration cannot be trapped in the

clothing. So you always feel dry.(Schoeller has also led the world with its environmental approach with the very first wastewater reactor to qualify it for the tough environmental standard, the Oeko Tex Standard 100.)

All told this soft shell is so good at breathing it will help you concentrate on the real enemy.

The rain that falls on our mountains ain’t as pure as the driven snow. Precipitation occurs around particles in the atmosphere. Sometimes those particles are down to nature: dust, salt, volcanic ash. And sometimes they’re down to us: exhaust fumes, waste incinerators and power stations.

On its journey to the sea, we will add a little organic farm waste and a dash of agrochemicals. Each village and town will shower, bath, dishwash and flush in its wake. Some will treat its banks as a tip, so that downstream you can measure the high water mark by how far up the trees the bin bags flutter.

The river flows back into the sea and one day will become river again.

Because they know how to stay cool when they get hot. It took the Merino sheep thousands of years and a lot of sweat to learn how to do that.

A small flock were first introduced into Australia in 1797. Their descendents had originated from Spain where they had been bred for �000 years.

The Merinos were unique. Their evolution in a hot climate meant they could do something that no other sheep could do.

They could expel moisture away from their body to help lower their body temperature. So despite their heavy fleeces of the finest wool they always kept their cool.

Sportwool is based on the principle of combining the best in modern man-made fibre technology with the natural benefits of ultrafine Merino wool.

With our Sportwool fleeces, it’s the soft Merino fibre in the fabric mix that helps to regulate your body temperature (unlike your everyday run-of-the-mill synthetic fleece).

The polyester in the Sportwool mix is also lightweight and durable, making it more comfortable to wear and easier to care for than pure wool. It also gives you greater wind and chill protection than polyester alone.

Sheep are cool

So when you wear Sportwool, you know that it is naturally breathable and is capable of cooling you down when it’s hot and keeping you warm, even in extremely cold temperatures. David Attenborough voiceover). Firstly, it begins and ends in the same place – freshwater. The eggs incubate and hatch in the safety of quiet pools, usually found at the river’s source. From there the young salmon begin their long journey to the saltwater of the sea, this is where they will spend most of their adult lives (up to four years). After maturing fully, they migrate back to freshwater, up the river to spawn and soon after die in the same pools where they were born (end of David Attenborough voiceover).

The problem in the Teifi has been that there are simply less salmon returning to the river

than in previous years. Are they lost? Did they get seasick? Or are they bored of sleepy Cardigan?

Well no, not really... A six year investigation by the Environment Agency has concluded that the main reason they weren’t returning was due to over-fishing at sea by Irish drift-nets. These nets can be several miles long and are barely visible to fish, so they were scooping up everything from herring to whales and dolphins.

So salmon being salmon, and following the same migration routes generation after

generation, made it easy for the drift-nets to intercept them too, at a rate that they couldn’t keep up with (they only mate once in their lifetime you know). In the end, those fishermen very nearly did themselves out of a job. Duh.

But in the background one guy saw the plummeting fish count, one guy was working hard to put it right, one guy was looking to the future instead of the right now. Marine Minister Noel Dempsey was the guy trying to get those drift-nets banned.

In �006 he succeeded and the Irish Government banned their use, meaning that an

Something here doesn’t quite add up, because fishing for salmon in the Teifi these days ain’t what it used to be. In fact, you could even say it’s a little like trying to Find Nemo.

You see, salmon stocks have seen quite a decline in the past thirty years, due mostly to man-made factors. In 1966 the recorded annual catch from net fishing on the Teifi was 1800 fish. Thirty-two years later in 1998 the catch had dropped to only �00 fish.

In order to understand how this is happening you may need to know a little about their fascinating life cycle (cue

10 -11 = -1 estimated 68,000 more fish will be swimming back up rivers in Britain – an estimated 1000 to �000 extra fish in the Teifi alone. The fact that they actually put their money where their mouth is and paid over £1� million in compensation to around 800 commercial fishermen who stand to lose their jobs, should be applauded too.

The ban protects future generations of salmon and ensures that there will now be plenty more fish in the sea.

So praise be to the Irish and thanks to Noel for giving us our fish back.

KIMO international Fishing for Litter: a great idea by the Dutch Fisheries Asscociation whereby fishermen are paid to bring ashore any litter they pick up while at sea, thus keeping their own backyard clean.Plans to roll this out to UK ports are in the pipeline.

Take cod for example. It is on our plates because of a large number of other flora and fauna that together provide a clean, safe environment with enough food and habitat to support a viable population.

It’s the eco-system that keeps the oceans healthy and maintains stocks of fish. So that is what we need to protect. The whole. But we are still ruled by a quotas system that is well intended but shallow in its outlook. So they carry on planning for today by ignoring tomorrow.

As a result there are more than �00 marine dead zones around the world. Two years ago, there were

only 1�0 dead zones. They range in size from a few square miles to one in the Baltic of over 70,000 square miles. (That’s about half the size of the UK.)

Even when you stop fishing in these areas, the fish stocks don’t return. Sadly, this is what happens when eco-systems are destroyed.

Yet in the UK only around two square miles of our sea is protected marine reserve (or no take zone as they are known). That’s just 0.00�% of our waters.

Scientists are pushing for at least �0–30% to be protected.

Each link depends on the next link to form the chain.

No link is more important than another.

In nature, there is a similar kind of chain: they call it an eco-system.

Each species is dependent on one and another for survival.

Indeed, the greater the bio-diversity, the more chance an eco-system can survive whatever man will throw at it in the future.

So instead of focusing on protecting a single species (as in the quotas system) we need to change tact.

You can learn a lot from a bike chain

We need to look after the whole eco-system that supports that species.

Or to put it another way, we have been managing one link and not the whole chain.

In the future we will need to manage pollution, habitat disturbance (sand and gravel extraction) as well as over-fishing.

Currently, we do not consider environmental issues, only the numbers of fish we can catch. Yet the number of fish that we can catch is, of course, directly related to environmental issues.

This river we live on is amazing. At 7�.8 miles, the Teifi is one of the longest in Wales, and one of the most pristine and least modified river catchments in lowland Britain. It’s known as one of the best rivers in Wales for salmon. It’s also home to rare species of animals (such as otters), plants, and insects and is even a certified EU Special Area of Conservation.

So we figured the most important question to ask while we were doing this catalogue was how the Teifi was doing. Is it healthy? Is it poorly? Clean as a whistle or stinking dirty? Perhaps somewhere in between? We thought it would be kind of interesting to find out what’s in it, who put it there and what it does to animals and plant life. So on our journey from source to sea we collected water samples from different points along the river, we also looked at the history of the river and how it was previously used.

We know that over the years certain people have mistreated the river. For example, during the nineteenth century the industrialists dumped slate waste which spread downstream, causing the river to become shallower and narrower. Even in �003 some farmers, who weren’t thinking straight, were dumping a cheap toxic crop spray which they were illegally using as sheep dip. We know that when these harmful chemicals (mostly nitrates, phosphates and ammonia) are leached into the river they cause plants to die and bacteria to grow – bacteria that sucks up oxygen. Our scientific friends told us that this process is called eutrophication (might be handy for a pub quiz one day).

That lack of oxygen in the water can mean that certain plant and animal life can struggle to survive. Staggeringly though, it seems that its affects on fish stocks weren’t disastrous and the river has now flushed much of it away. Those chemicals are still present, but the levels have decreased greatly and are no longer dangerous.

To put things into perspective, we can be mighty proud of our river. Over the past five years sheep dip use is more heavily policed and, though fish stocks are down, this river of ours still teems with wildlife.
