SEPTEMBER, 2015 Dear St. David’s Church Family, Well, I believe I can safely say that we are off and rolling! “Let’s change the name of the Ministry Fair to #HowWeRole,” was the inspiration of one of the planners for last week’s event. I had been among you at that time long enough to know that how we role at St. David’s is unique and inspired, Godly and original, loving, caring, and fun! The change in spelling from “roll” to “role” underscores the character of this truly intergenerational Body of Christ where we cherish our different identities as God’s children. The many displays and the excitement of the people attending T laughing, calling to one another across Sanders Hall, playing, eating, singing, earnestly discussing, and just being grateful to be there T were our entrance into this “program year.” Please take time to enjoy this issue of the Wild Onion. There is a lot ahead for us this month. A few reflections I’d like to share with you about the coming weeks include:

ONION RINGS Youth Minister Connor McCracken is visiting his homeland for the next few weeks, partici-

pating in a wedding, visiting family and friends, and even meeting up somewhere in Ireland with some St. David’s parishioners! Get the details from Connor when he returns to Nash-ville just after Rally Day.

Meg Raj graduated from Bel-mont University on August 7 with an MBA in finance from Belmont University. Congratu-lations Meg! Well done!

The Rev. Ann Walling will lead our Oct 11th Adult Forum and share thoughts about her new book: Sunday Dinner: Coming of Age in the Segregated South. SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE by Susan Huggins

The Search Committee is moving right along with the work we are doing to find potential candidates to present to the Vestry for approv-al and calling the next Rector. We just concluded the parish survey and will have the results interpreted by Holy Cow Con-sulting in mid-September. We anticipate hav-ing focus groups after this and will provide more details of that in a few weeks. We will also have some Adult Forum sessions dedicated to answering questions you may have about the process. From all of this infor-mation, we will create a parish profile which will be available to potential candidates. As this process moves along, we would like to remind everyone that we will be taking names of potential candidates for the next few months.

There are nomination forms and envelopes in the narthex and outside of the sacristy. Simply fill out the form, put it in the envelope and leave it in the basket on the table. These will then be turned over to Canon Snare who will continue the process from there. Please feel free to contact anyone on the Search Committee if you have any questions. This is an exciting time for our parish as we discover all the strengths of this wonderful community and look forward to our future to-gether.

FROM THE VESTRY

As I read the August Wild Onion, I was struck by what an amazing, vibrant parish we are. This is not something I did not already know, but was brought home through the articles from so many different entities and activities. And then we had the Ministry Fair, or #HowWeRole on August 23. The excitement and energy in Sanders Hall was palpable. We truly demonstrated our many interests, gifts, and ministries that are St. David’s. How fortunate we are! There is a level of commitment to this parish of which we can all be proud. Because of this commitment, we have not let things go by the wayside as we search for a new rector. Witness our August attendance. For the mid-August Sundays, which have traditionally been the “slump” Sundays, the church was full. By the time you read this, we will have experienced our first Camp St. David’s Intergenerational celebration, with another to follow on Sept. 6. I know they will be wonderful. Then we have Rally Day on Sept. 13, and the excitement of the new year of programs. We are all blessed to be a part of such a dynamic, faithful, loving family. How we role indeed.

CHILDREN’S WORSHIP AND GODLY PLAY by Jennifer Sanders

Rally verb ral·ly \ˈra-lē\ to bring or come together in order to support a person or cause or for concerted action. Synonyms: get together, band together, as-semble, join forces, unite, collaborate.

LET’S DO THAT ON SEPTEMBER 13th!!! It’s time to come together for another great year for Children’s Worship and Godly Play. As in the past we will start at 9:15 with our amazing Children’s Worship in the Ann Walling Chapel, then split in to age appropriate Godly Play groups. We hope to see you often! Our focus this year is Matthew 4:19 “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” Jesus knew he would need friends to help him do his work. Let’s do his work through our actions and words and by being great role models. On our first Sunday, September 13, parents and volunteers are invited to our Godly Play story of “Jesus Chooses Disciples.” This would be a fun opportunity for you to get a feel of what we do on Sundays in our Godly Play classrooms. Also, if you are interested in being a storyteller, doorkeeper or usher let me know. We appreciate all the helping hands we can get!

WELCOME BACK, DONALD!

After 3 long months, we are happy to welcome back Donald Cornelius, our Organist and Choirmaster of 20 years, from his well-deserved sabbatical. We are all anxious to hear about his travels and we hope he got the

rest and renewal he needed. It was because of the generosity of our congregation that this was made possible and for that we are grateful to all who contributed. The Adult Choir’s first Sunday to sing this fall will be on Rally Day, September 13th, so make sure you are there to give Donald a welcome home at the cookies and punch reception sponsored by the Daughters of the King in Sanders Hall following the 10:30 service.

Susan Huggins, Chair Organist Sabbatical Committee

TIME FOR CHOIRS TO BEGIN! by Donald Cornelius

Our children’s choirs are for singers from kin-dergarten through sixth grade, meeting for re-hearsal and dinner on Sunday evenings from 4:45 p.m. to 6:10 p.m. beginning September 20, and continuing through Youth Sunday, tra-ditionally the Sunday after Easter. The Adult Choir rehearses each Wednesday from 7:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. and sings for the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service and other special services from Rally Day through the Day of Pentecost. The first Adult Choir rehearsal for the fall will be September 1. Participation in choir is a wonderful opportunity to serve St. David’s, to get to know other members of the parish, and to have a good time learning and singing. If you or your chil-dren would like to be a part of our choir pro-gram, please contact Donald Cornelius, at 352- 0293 or [email protected].

YOUTH NEWS by Connor McCracken

Youth Minister

During the summer a group of parishioners met on different occasions to develop ideas of what we want the young people who journey through the youth ministry to know, feel and do during their

time in the ministry. We grouped these hopes, dreams and ideas into related themes, and these themes will help guide and steer the Youth Ministry Team as we program, teach and interact with the parish young people. The Youth Curriculum team consisted of: Julie Erwin, Judy Grace, Owen Grimenstein, Rahn Huber, Dick Klausner, Betty Lentz, Betti Lose, Josh McGuire, Sommer Pearson, Mary Leigh Rayhab, and Jennifer Sanders. This could not have been done without each of these people and I am so grateful for their wisdom, support and their heart for the youth ministry and the young people in the programs. Thank you all. Rally Day On September 13th Sunday school and Youth Group start up again for the coming year.

Sunday school Young people between 5th and 12th grade are invited to join us on Sunday mornings for a time of fellowship; we will be playing games, getting to know new students and leaders. Sunday school starts at 9:15 a.m. and runs till 10:15 a.m.

Youth Group Young people between 7th and 12th grade are invited to come to church from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoons for fun, games and a time of discussion together. Please join us on September 13th as we hang out, serve the Room In The Inn ministry by organizing supplies for the winter and talk about what it means to serve others and have a servant heart.

Each person will be given a harness and taken through the safety features and guidelines of the activity. This event will cost; 1 Child - $20: 2 Children - $35: 3 Children - $50 We do not want cost to be a reason for people be unable to attend; if you have any questions contact Connor McCracken ([email protected]) or the church office. REFLECTIONS ON THE COLLIDE YOUTH MISSION EXPERIENCE

by Hannah Rayhab

On July 6th we, the St. David’s youth group, headed to Fisk University to embark on an adventure we would never forget. We met many new people including a group from Gladeville. They were lots of fun. Their leader Jacob was like the annoying but fun uncle. Every morning he would bug me about being tired and I would end up saying something smart back at him (that was the Rayhab coming out in me). We went to many different places that impacted me. The one that impacted me the most was the bridge ministry. It’s a group of people that come together to make a place where homeless people can come to worship, eat, get food they need to take back home, and collect clothes they need. It takes place every Tuesday night under the Jefferson Street Bridge. Each person was assigned a job to do. My job was hospitality. I would go through the line, get a plate of food and then meet up with a homeless person and follow them to their seat, give them food, and talk to them for a couple minutes One of the times I went through the line there was a family of four, a mom and her three daughters, so I went through the line with three other people that were in the group and when we got to their seats there wasn’t four seats together anywhere. The mom and the two older girls went and sat together and left the younger one by herself. I looked over at the younger one and she was so happy to be there which instantly brought a huge smile to my face. I gave her the plate of food and spoke to her for a couple of minutes. I found out that her name was Ariel and that she was eight. At first I felt bad for her because her family left her by herself, but then it hit me that she didn’t care about that. She was a happy little girl that was just so grateful for us being there giving her what she needs. It made me think that I should be more grateful for what I have and not complain when my parents don’t buy me the pair of shoes I want.

Thinking back on the theology talks we had throughout the week two of them really stuck with me. They were the talks about doubt and caring for creation. Doubt is a big thing in every person’s life. We all have doubted something in our lives, whether it be our faith or ourselves or each other. It made me realize that it’s okay to doubt. If we don’t doubt we might never learn from that doubt. It’s okay to doubt God. Doubt is a big part of faith as it makes us realize and think and learn about things we wouldn’t have thought about or learned or even noticed before The talk about caring for creation stuck with me too. We took a poll during this talk to see how much everyone cares for God’s creation. It went from not caring at all to being a tree hugger. I was right in the middle. I am the person that will recycle if it’s convenient. Someone either in my discussion group or in the theology talk said that people don’t care if they litter. Think about this. They asked someone if you walked into church and there was trash everywhere what would you say or do. That person said I would say who would do such a thing like this and ruin God’s house. The thing is the world is God’s house and we are destroying it and not even realizing it. That hit me hard. We need to care more about the world we live in and God’s creation I had a blast during the Collide week. It’s something that I will never forget. I experienced so many new things and learned stuff about Nashville that I didn’t know about or didn’t even know existed.

YOUTH TO VOLUNTEER AT FOOD BANK The youth group will be volunteering with Second Harvest Food Bank on Thursday, September 10th at 5:30 pm.

MISSION AND OUTREACH

…Faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. --James 2:17

St. David’s parish family continues to grow in enthusiasm and commitment in this interim pe-riod. During the past month our focus has been inward as we have examined our per-spectives and dreams by filling out our parish assessment. At the same time we are focusing on our out-reach ministries. St. David’s has been involved in countless ministries throughout Nashville and beyond. Some of these programs include St. Luke’s, scholarship programs in Honduras, work with our companion diocese, homeless ministries, and micro lending through Kiva.org (264 loans in 80 countries). Opportunities to serve others abound, and a newly formed Out-reach Committee has begun to explore some of them. One such opportunity is described below. But we can do more! St. David’s is a multi-tasking place! What are your thoughts regard-ing outreach? If you would like to serve on the committee or have suggestions, please contact Judy Grace or Jim Irwin.

“TOGETHER WE CAN DO SO MUCH” How St. David’s Brought Art Therapy to Kenya

by Caroline McNair

This summer St. David’s gra-ciously donated funds to cover the cost of art supplies to be given to the stu-

dents at the Made In the Streets program. MITS, as it is fondly called, has been dedicated to the process of rescuing young adolescents off the streets of Nairobi, Kenya for 20 years and providing them with a home, education, and a Christian lifestyle. At the end of July, I had the opportunity to re-turn to the school to assist in leading an Art Therapy class for the students. Art Therapy is an expressive form of counseling through

which the individual has the opportunity to ex-press their memories, feelings, and dreams through the creation of artwork, poems, songs, or stories. The donation given by St. David’s allowed our mission team to purchase note-books, crayons, colored pencils, and markers for the students to use and keep. The Art Therapy class was a great success, and the students were incredibly thankful to each re-ceive a notebook that they could have as their own. Through the class they were able to ex-plore their pasts, illustrate their favorite memo-ries during their time at school, and express their dreams for the future. It was through these exercises that I was able to witness how important this class had been to them. The students took great pride in the works they created, eagerly sharing their artwork and their stories with us and with each other. One little boy named Eugene drew a picture of a bus (shown below) and drew himself under the bus; when I asked him what he was illustrating, he told me of his dream to become a mechanic. A young girl named Catherine chose to draw the children’s home she planned to establish so she could aid other street children like herself. (shown at the beginning of this article) Eugene and Catherine’s drawings demonstrate how effective and meaningful the Art Therapy class was to the students at MITS. The dona-tion given by St. David’s made this all pos-sible. Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Alone the students have few opportunities to receive such gifts like the notebooks and art supplies, but through this generous donation St. David’s chose to come together with the students to achieve “so much.” Thank you all for choosing to support the MITS students. Please continue to pray for the students and the staff at Made In the Streets, as well as for the 60,000 children still re-portedly living on the streets of Nairobi. For more infor-mation on MITS or to find out how you and your family can become involved in this ministry, please visit madeinthestreets.org. drawing by Eugene, Kenya
