The computer wakes from sleep mode unexpectedly

Step 1: Changing device settings in Windows

Some device settings can cause the computer to return from a power savings state

unexpectedly. This can cause the computer to wake from sleep mode for no apparent reason. Activity from devices such as a Wireless Mouse, Network, or High Definition Audio can cause the computer to wake. Network activity can cause the network hardware to wake the computer, especially when the network is always on (like cable and DSL connections). Use the following

steps to prevent hardware devices from waking the computer:

1. In Windows, search for and open the Device Manager.2. Click the arrow next to the device that needs to be adjusted.

• If you are using an optical mouse, select Mice and other pointing devices.

• If the computer is using an "always-on" Internet connection, select Network Adapters.

• To check the high definition audio settings, click Sound, video, and game controllers.

3. Double-click the name of the device to open a Properties window.4. If the Power Management tab is available, proceed to the next step.

• If the Power Management tab is not available, click the Change Settings button. The same Properties window opens with the Power Management tab available.

• If you are prompted for an Administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

5. Click the Power Management tab, and remove the check next to Allow this device to wake the computer. You might need to do this for each of the devices listed in the previous step, mice, keyboards, and sound.

6. Click OK, close the open windows, and then restart the computer.

Step 2: Checking for a problem with a connected device in WindowsSome devices can cause sleep/standby issues. Use these steps to check for a problem with the devices connected to the computer.1. Disconnect all non-essential connected devices (printers, scanners, USB drives, etc.).2. Restart the computer with only the original mouse, monitor, and keyboard connected.

• If this resolves the sleep/standby issue, one of the connected devices was causing the problem. Replace one device and test to see if the issue occurs again. Continue adding devices and testing until you find the device that is causing the problem.

• If the issue still exists, proceed to the next troubleshooting step.

Step 3: Installing/upgrading antivirus application and definitions, and running a scan in Windows• Some viruses and other malicious applications can cause sleep/hibernate issues. It is therefore advisable to download/update antivirus applications and definitions, and run a scan.

• Perform a virus scan to check the computer for possible viruses or other malicious applications that might be interfering with the sleep/hibernate modes.

• For instructions on downloading and updating antivirus applications and definitions, and running a virus scan, refer to the HP support document Resolving and Preventing Viruses on Your Computer (Windows 10, 8) (in English). If the issue still exists, proceed to the

next troubleshooting step.

Step 4: Scanning for malwareMalware applications can also cause sleep/hibernate issues. Windows Defender helps to prevent malware from infecting your computer in two ways:• Real-time protection: Windows Defender

notifies you when malware tries to install itself or run on your computer. It also notifies you when applications attempt to change important settings.

• Scanning options: You can use Windows Defender to scan for malware that might be installed on your computer and to automatically remove (or temporarily quarantine) anything that is detected during a scan.

Open and use Windows Defender with the following steps:1. In Windows, search for and open

Windows Defender.2. Check the Windows Defender screen for harmful or unwanted software on your computer.• If Windows Defender detects potentially

harmful or unwanted software, the names and details of the software display on the opening screen. Use this information to decide whether to remove or temporarily disable the software.

• If Windows Defender does not detect potentially harmful or unwanted software, no action is required.

3. Run a scan of your computer with Windows Defender. You can run a quick scan or a full scan looking for malware. A full scan might cause your computer to run slowly until the scan is complete.

• A quick scan checks the places on the hard disk drive that malware is most likely to infect. To run a quick scan, click Quick, and then click Scan now.

• A full scan checks all files on your hard disk drive and all currently running programs. If you suspect that malware has infected your computer, run a full scan. To run a full scan, select Full, and then click Scan now.
