HPL NEWSLinking YOU to the World of Fun and Education

FOCUS ON…Saima KadirSaima Kadir was recently assigned to manage Houston Public Library’s (HPL) brand new Virtual Library Services team. Kadir, along with her team, will be working to ensure that HPL meets current needs and anticipates future virtual services for customers, such as: interactivity through podcasts and videos, mobile tools, text alerts/notifications (receive text alerts for holds and overdue items), mobile optimized building tours (using smartphones as a tour guide), and much more. Working collaboratively with other staff across the Library

system, she will lead HPL into a more exciting, vibrant, engaging, and interactive virtual presence – continuing HPL’s standard as a recognized leader in cutting-edge service delivery.

In 1995 Kadir obtained her Masters in Library Science while working at Rice University’s Fondren Library. She initially started her college studies with another career in mind, but after working a temporary job repairing library books in the DePaul University library and then finding herself working in other libraries over the years, she knew she was destined to be a librarian. Kadir has been an HPL librarian for more than seven years.

Kadir has been able to combine her passion for library work and technology through her current and recent work at HPL. Kadir said, “I love what I do! One library exposure brought me many opportunities, and at this time, I couldn’t be happier doing anything else. I’m working with a great team and together we are starting to work on innovative ideas that we think customers are going to like. Technology is always changing, so we are going to be working on providing up-to-date technology that our customers may need now and in the future.”

Kadir is an avid reader. She likes different types of books, but there are two authors whose books she will read no matter what they write: Margret Atwood and Pakistani author Kamila Shamsie. She is presently reading The Mirage by Matt Ruff. She also recommends the Dummies Series to anyone wanting to learn about technology.

The Literary Horse: When Legends Come to LifeNow - March 31, 2012Central Library | 500 McKinney, Houston, TX 77002

Does Black Beauty live at the end of your street? Does Pegasus take wing from the pasture around the corner? Explore this exhibit and find out!

From Achilles receiving his immortal chargers to Don Quixote’s farewell to Rocinante, literature is full of unforgettable stories and poetry about heroic horses and horse-people. This exhibit brings those legends to life by pairing up to 100 photos of today’s novice through Olympic equestrians with quotations from the world’s great books. Though legends may sometimes seem like nothing more than imaginary tales from long ago, they are happening again here. And though their horses may seem impossibly good and brave and splendid, they are living again now. Look closely, and you will see the great heart in both the horse show champion and the shaggy pony in your neighborhood. Look more closely still, and you will see the timeless hero in your neighbor, in your family member, in your friend, and, ultimately, in yourself.

The Literary Horse: When Legends Come to Life is an exhibit touring public and school libraries worldwide through 2012. Exhibit creator Vanessa Wright is a multiple award-winning teacher, author, and equine photographer.

Fotofest 2012Photographers Jeff Heger and Paul GreenbergApril 1 - April 30, 2012Central Library | 500 McKinney, Houston, TX 77002

Houston Public Library is pleased to announce its participation in Fotofest 2012. We will have two artists on view for you to enjoy.

Industrial Steel by Jeff HegerChanneling Piet Mondrian, Mark Rothko and Franz Kline; Jeff Heger photographs industrial locations around the world. He explores large steel structures with an eye trained in mid-Century abstract art and tries to bring that dimension to his photographs.

People of Russia - 1975 by Paul GreenbergPaul Greenberg, known to many as a Dallas physician, is also a respected photographer whose works have been exhibited in curated shows across the state since the 1970’s. His work is the product of travels near and far, in which a keen eye for observing the juxtaposition of colliding cultures, life on urban street corners or the exotic landscape, draw the viewer to his photographs.

In Black and White Magazine, he stated, “I take a very simple approach to making photographs. I document what I see. Nothing in my photography is planned or manipulated. I’m not interested in inventing a new way of seeing. My intent is to nurture and preserve a very important photographic exercise—the documentation of life on the street.”
