Prickly Hay

End of Year Performance

Our children in Key Stage 1 were

involved in our end of term school production of Prickly Hay. They put on a fantastic performance of acting and singing. It was brilliant to see so many of our children demonstrate such commitment to learning and

practising their lines and music. It was a wonderful way to begin the holiday season and we look forward to

exploring how different cultures celebrate New Year.

Many thanks to Mrs Pieterse, Mrs Martins-Mitchell and all of the other adults involved, for all of their hard work.

This term we have been very busy organising events and fundraising, on Thursday 20th October 2016 we held an event called “Spooky time” . All the children really enjoyed it, we had incredible spooky themed cakes and we also made biscuits to raise money. Our dress up day was a huge success too. Children made a huge effort and really loved wearing their best spooky outfits.

The event was well attended and raised over £600. The PTA decided to use a portion of the money to treat the

children to End of Year Theatre Performances (see below). We all say a big Thank You to the PTA.

Reception – Tales of the Dragon storytelling performance

Years 1, 2 4 and 5 – Big Wow, Small Wonder, by the Half Moon Theatre group

Year 3 – Trip to Polka Theatre to see Babe.

Year 6 – Trip to Chickenshed Theatre to see Adventures to Oz

We would like to thank Ms. Lovell's greengrocers in Highbury Barn for their incredibly kind gift again this year of a Christmas tree for the Lunch/Playcentre area. School council representatives really enjoyed walking with Myra to choose a tree and it has been much appreciated by everyone in the school. We would also like to thank Ms Lovell for providing each child with a Christmas Tree decoration.

We have Fran and Playcentre children to thank for the beautiful decorating of the tree.

Additional funds raised from Spooky Time, were donated towards Winterfest 2016, which was held on Friday 16th December 2016 a wonderful evening of fun activities, amazing food, Father Christmas and entertainment. Thank you all for coming and supporting this event. The festivities were enjoyed by pupils, parents/carers and staff, it was fantastic to have everyone from the Highbury Quadrant School community coming together at the end of term. We raised an amazing

£1593.00 towards completing phase 3 of the Small Hall Music/Arts space project. Without the kindness of

volunteers donating their time and efforts to Winterfest we would not have been able to make it happen. A massive thank you goes out to our team of helpers who contributed to organising the event, made activities, staffed activities, sourced gifts and decorations, sold raffle tickets and prepared and served food. We could not have done this without our amazing Father Christmas and his beautiful sleigh, our DJ Ben Ryan, wonderful hosts Miss. O'Malley and Mr Harragan, Anita for her terrific singing, Claudine (stringed instrument teacher) and Lucky (steel pan teacher). We had the most amazing staff from Highbury Quadrant as

attendants, stage hands to help with turning the stage around, giving technical support and helping the

children. Amazing decorations and props to really make Winterfest festive came from The Garden Classroom and Steve Trout from Islington Council. And last but by no means least the, the pupils who performed in the steel pans group and those who played their cellos, violas and violins so beautifully and made us really proud - what incredibly talented young musicians we have!

We cannot and could not do this without the help and support of parents so please if you can get involved it does make a difference.

HQSA will meet again in January to continue our fundraising effort in support of the school so please do come along to the next meeting - dates to be advertised on return to school.

School Christmas Lunch

On Wednesday 14th December the children and staff enjoyed our Annual Christmas Lunch. The delicious menu included

turkey, stuffing, potato swirls, roast potatoes and vegetables. With chocolate log for dessert.

Also, a big thank you to Caterlink for donating ingredients and staff to make cookies for the children. Sandra and the kitchen staff worked tirelessly for these to be ready, they were

beautiful and the children enjoyed them.

School Council News

Congratulations to the following children who were democratically elected to represent their year groups on the School Council: Ana 1H, Dylan 1Q, Hamish 2Q, Summer 2H, Laura 3Q, Adewale 3H, Taijaun 4Q, Daniella 4H, Dylan 5Q, Arwa 5Q, Kayf 6Q and Arin 6Q.

Their first task was to represent Highbury Quadrant at an Anti-Bullying Workshop at Hargrave Park Primary School. All the children were wonderful ambassadors for our school and some of them even found the time to write about the experience. The following are extracts from their articles:

“Don’t bully! Tell the teacher to tell them to stop!” Dylan 1Q.

“We learned about different types of bullying, for example cyber bullying”. Laura 3Q.

“We learned that bullying is ongoing, intentional and deliberate. We also learned that bullying can be verbal, physical, mental and cyber bullying”. Arin 6Q.

“The workshops on bullying were fun and taught us a lot about bullying and what you should do if you are

being bullied”. Ana 1H.

“We learned lots of things and we worked at three workshops. “We were doing things about Anti Bullying week and Power for Good”. Daniella 4H.

Thank you to all the children for their contributions!

Maths week

Maths week took place last week 12th—16th December 2016. It was an exciting week with lots of fun activi-ties and competitions taking place.

Hassti from Year 4 said “I enjoyed doing the algebra activity because I like working with numbers and codes.”

The theme of the week was “Maths Puzzles”. Each class was visited by the Happy puzzle company where they got to work as a team to solve a range of puzzles.

Malachi and Mahee from Year 5 said, “We enjoyed the times trial because it challenged your brain, we also enjoyed the game of 24 which made you use your maths knowledge to make 24.”

Many children took part in the maths times table trial and number bond challenge from Y1- Y6, testing their skills against the clock.

Throughout the week the children investigated using maths: creating stars; learning algebra; and making

codes; using maths when cooking; and problem solving.

There was also an opportunity for parents to come in and complete puzzles with the children.
