00 Introduction

AFTER GROWTH HACKING... Some say it’s a philosophy, others that it’s a trend. For some years now, Growth Hacking has been infiltrating the world of start-ups – among others. This mix of techniques, from marketing to web development to data analysis, aims at rapidly developing your business on a limited budget. Growth Hackers have limited time and money, so they have to be creative and find indirect ways – “hacks” – to develop their business. Want a famous example? In 1996, Hotmail automatically added a short message at the end of it’s users’ emails that would help it soar: “PS: I Love You. Get Your Free Email at Hotmail”.

... LET’S TALK RECRUITMENT HACKING!

PS: I LoveYou. Get Your

Free Email at Hotmail.

How to apply Growth Hacking principles to Human Resources and specifically, for this first episode, to recruitment? This is what we try to explain in this short study. The presented methods – or hacks – are mostly experiments. They are all matched with actual cases.

01 Use your own product as a recruitment tool

02 Hide messages for developers

03 Rely on geolocation 04 Go where you are (really) not expected

05 Rely on artificial intelligence 06 Rely on digital marketing technologies

01 Use your own product as a recruitment tool

//01 S P O T I F Y Music streaming website Spotify uses playlists to send a message to programmers, who often listen to music while working. After exchanging for the first time on specialized websites such as GitHub or StackOverFlow, recruiting officers send this playlist, which turns into a job offer if you read the list of song titles. //02 G O O G L E Google offers developers searching for some complex queries on Google (such as “python lambda function list comprehension”) to take a quiz and enter its recruitment process. This hack allows Google to target applicants who were not actively searching for a job. 02 Hide messages for developers

//01 F L I C K R Picture sharing platform Flickr calls directly to applicants through the source code of its website. Nosy developers can find the short message: “You’re reading. We’re hiring” and are invited to visit their careers website. Source: https://www.troyhunt.com/deconstruct-websites-get-hired-hiding/

//02 N S A The National Security Agency (NSA) posted this strange message on its Tweeter account. First thought to be a mistake, it turned out to be an encrypted message aimed at identifying and recruiting the best hackers. 03 Rely on geolocation

//01 U B E R Uber recruits thanks to a game available on its app in some cities with a very large engineer population, such as Seattle, Boston, Austin and Denver. During their ride, engineers can solve “hacker challenges” and get a job. Source: http://venturebeat.com/2016/03/25/uber-recruiting-engineers-by-randomly-sending-a-coding-game-to-play-during-rides/

06 Rely on digital marketing technologies

//01 G O L D E N B E E S Programmatic buying, an automated and precise advertising targeting technology, can be used to communicate to a specific audience only. For example, graduates from La Sorbonne with an interest for energy and living in Paris. Golden Bees offers such a tool. Source: http://goldenbees.fr/

//02 L E L A P S Did an Internet user visit your website and leave it without applying to any of your offers? Retargeting with a program such as Lelaps allows you to remind them of your company by later displaying an ad banner in their browser. It can show new offers matching their profile. 06 Conclusion

Are we to have recruitment hackers in our companies? Just like Growth Hacking, Recruitment Hacking should start spreading in the start-up field. It seems quite suitable to

recruit developers.

The main interest, besides saving time and money, is to target candidates who are not necessarily actively looking for a job, and did not register in other common channels, such

as job boards.

Just as Growth Hacking does not stop after gaining new clients, HR Hacking does not stop after recruiting new employees.

In the next episode, we will talk about integration in the company, management and the creation of asset loyalty.
