“...empathy, intuition as well as objective listening skills” by Bob Weaver, SCTE/ISBE Region 1 Representative
Managing your team is as simple as planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and controlling right?
Perhaps that may work in a sterile short term environment however leadership talent in today’s work-
place is a critical element that some managers may overlook. Leadership skills that many folks alluded
to as “people skills” are a necessary conduit towards encouraging individual development, inspiring in-
novation as well as focused creativity within their team. Exceptional leaders are not only well suited in
management and organization of objectives they also place a high priority on leading folks in such a
way that inspires and encourages positive behavior toward a desired outcome.
Alternatively managers who thrive on being a type of all-knowing technical sub-
ject matter expert (SME) often find themselves a bit lean on interpersonal team
building let alone inspirational skills. Successful SMEs do not always make
good people leaders, however good people leaders bring out the best in SMEs.
Inspiring a team is truly an art that involves significant levels of empathy, intui-
tion as well as objective listening skills. Listening is not just patiently waiting for
your turn to speak. Listening is an honest and consistent ability to connect to
the accurate perspective of a conversation, evaluating various points of view
along the way, and introducing mutually acceptable alternatives when a com-
promise is in order. Empathy, intuition and solid listening skills are certainly not
talents that can be acquired by reading details in a book, digested and receive
a passing grade on the final exam. Typically you will need to practice your be-
havior then observe feedback and adjust as needed based on either expressed or implied details.
When a manager or supervisor achieves leadership skills they just may have the potential to inspire he-
roic behaviors in others. Everyday there are opportunities we face that involve a barrier or friction point
in achieving a desired outcome. How you as a leader choose to confront these challenges is up to you.
The decisions you make not only affects your path, but your actions are also being critically observed by
your team. Your leadership style and methods have the potential to stimulate optimistic energy and mo-
tivate your team. Hopefully the observed behavior you display will encourage and inspire positive be-
havior. When a choice is at hand during a problem solving scenario it is likely best not to react too
quickly or take the easy way out. Always consider the big picture. Otherwise as the saying goes you
may end up stepping over a dollar to pick up a quarter! Think outside the box and be honest and objec-
tive. Everything I’ve mentioned in this editorial is so much harder to do than say. However for the most
part anything worthwhile doing usually isn't simple, quick or easy to do, and if it were anyone could do
it. So start today by planting a seed of optimistic energy and water it regularly to encourage growth and
deep roots. Get your thinking cap on and visualize what past experience you’ve observed from a re-
spected leader that inspired you. Then think of something you as a leader did recently that you can
easily point to that inspired one of your team members. This moment of truth is a precious seed oppor-
tunity that you can build on. Be honest and consistent in your path to develop as many goodwill seeds
as possible. Don’t forget that seeds of inspiration do need to be planted deeply and nurtured by rein-
forcement over time to assure strong and powerful roots.
Active participation in the SCTE/ISBE is an opportunity for us to give back to our industry beyond one’s
self or associated company! It is a platform to allow us to be mentors, proficient board members and in
some instances even stellar technical subject matter experts. We are a coalition dedicated to sharing
knowledge with those in need and in turn supporting everyone’s learning and development. We are the
coalition of talent striving to leave it better than we found it by involving ourselves in people, tools, tech-
nology and resources.
Now go out there and make today a good day!

SCTE Region 1 consolidated Award Matrix Report Below please review our SCTE Region 1 consolidated Award Matrix Report as of month ended August 2016. We only have four months remaining in the year to finalize our tactical methods to finish the year with the best pos-sible performance.
As a region we all can celebrate with our top three Chapter performance Achievements: Leading the way is our tra-
ditional Golden Gate folks who are on an aggressive plan to earn a stretch goal over their performance of last year.
Sierra is next in line for their respectful performance to date followed by Central Cal who are surging in 3rd across
Region 1 Chapters. SoCal has also significantly improved their numbers since our last report and has moved ahead
of San Diego. The Desert Chapter is very close to managing a heroic come back while in the midst of a majority of
their Board members transitioning from TWC to the Charter environment as well as a recent departure of their Pres-
ident due to an employment transfer.
In Summary: Based on the current data from SCTE/ISBE Headquarters the compliance standings for our Region is tracking on an opportunity, for the most part, to achieve full compliance in all six of our region 1 chapters. However with the exception of Golden Gate the below report does indicate 5 chapters having compliance issues that do need to be completed. The most common of these compliance needs involve the requirement of updating or confirming Chapter Bank Signature Cards followed by 3 chapters whereby records reflect not all board members are active SCTE members. Additionally the Desert and San Diego Chapters do have an urgent need to gain Technical Training hours as soon as possible. If you have a good technical speaker contact or a suggestion that will assist these two chapters in managing the remaining time of this year to reach the minimum 30 hours please reach out to Bob Weaver or di-rectly to [email protected] (Desert Chapter) or [email protected] (San Diego Chapter). And your chapter will also earn Teamwork points as well!

SCTE/ISBE Region 1 “Extreme Awesomeness Award”
New to Region 1 this month is the launch of our inaugural “Extreme Awesomeness Award”
This recognition is presented to an individual who has demonstrated superior teamwork and contribution to
their Chapter as well as to the SCTE/ISBE. Candidates for this recognition may either be nominated by a
Board Member within Region 1, or directly selected by the Region 1 Representative. As this is the inaugu-
ral recognition and just now implemented I, as your Region 1 Representative, have selected our very 1st
winner of this most prestigious award. I do so by direct witness of honorable behaviors that support the ba-
sis of this award. In addition to all the accolades that this award brings the winner does receive a most
stunning SCTE Region 1 (CA; HI; NV) Polo shirt to wear and strut with pride!
Please join me in congratulating Don Dyer, SCTE Sierra Chapter Director of Training for this very well
deserved and esteemed honor!
To all Region 1 Chapter Board Members: Now it’s your opportunity to assist in the selection of our next
worthy recipient within our Region 1 Coalition of leaders that are clearly worthy of this recognition. Look
for selfless and heroic behaviors that contribute to the good of the many while leaving it better than we find
it! Please send your nominee to...
Bob.Weaver@ Cox.com and include a short description of their “Extreme Awesomeness” .
