We are proud of our students on a daily basis and we enjoyed celebrating three different times this week. On Wednesday, we hosted our monthly #SouthPride day for October where students participated in a universal lesson on Connecting with Others. Students also participated in a Flexible Learning Day where they had a half day of face-to-face instruction at school and a half day of flexible learning at home. In the afternoon, teachers from both South and Central worked together on the process of aligning grading and assessment practices across the district. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Dear Hornet Nation,

This week we celebrated student achievement at Breakfast Club on Tuesday morning (beinggood humans), Hornet Scholars on Thursday afternoon and evening (Dean’s List and/or earing3+ on at least 1 AP test), and National Merit Breakfast this morning (top in the country PSATscores). We are proud of our students on a daily basis and we enjoyed celebrating threedifferent times this week.

Wednesday, October 16, 2019Important PSAT Testing Information

In order to fully prepare our students for the SAT, District 86 will administer the series ofPreliminary Scholastic Aptitude Tests (PSAT) to all juniors on October 16, 2019 during theregular school day to help all students demonstrate their full potential when they take the SATin April. Additionally, these tests are being offered to District 86 students free of charge,allowing all juniors the opportunity to use their PSAT results as their qualifying scores theNational Merit Scholarship Competition.

Details for October 16,2019:All students will attend on October 16, 2019 and will arrive at school at the regular time.

The only exception to this is that there will be no Early Bird PE forJUNIORS

Juniors (grade 11) will take the PSAT/NMSQT while all other students will attend theirregular schedule

This standardized testing program is part of the comprehensive academic and post-secondaryplanning services District 86 provides to all students. For additional information about the SATassessments, please click here to visit the College Board website.

Families are also encouraged to reach out to their student’s school counselor for moreinformation about post-secondary planning or other academic questions.

College Visits at Hinsdale SouthStudents must sign up prior to the visit in the Counseling Office and secure a pass to the visit.

AP Exam Registration – Nov 3 DeadlineRegistration for AP Exams at Hinsdale South can only be completed online atwww.TotalRegistration.net/AP/141428. It is helpful to have a credit card or debit cardand your student’s schedule available before beginning the online registration process.

College Board AccountYour student will need to take the additional step of logging into their College Boardaccount and “joining” their AP courses. Click here to see the step by step instructionsthey will be given through their AP class(es).

AP exams cost $100 per test, but this fee is waived if your family was approved for a fee waiverduring the book purchasing process. AP Exam registration must be completed by November3, 2019. If the initial registration deadline is missed, late registration will be available between

November 4 - 13 with an additional late registration fee of $20 per exam.

Hispanic Heritage Month is in full swing and students of TheCulture have diligently prepared activities for our Hinsdale Southcommunity to celebrate the dynamic and rich history of Hispanic

and Latinx Americans. Sol Peralta once said, “Your individuality isimportant, but so is belonging. Recognize the parts of your culture that have shaped your past,

and the parts you want to carry with you into the future.”

On Friday, October 11th, the final celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month will be a powerfulone. During periods 1-3, Hispanic and Latinx Hinsdale South students and staff members and

District 86 community members will speak their truth around the idea “I am…”.#SouthPride

Congratulations Alumni,Cole Haubenreiser, Class of 2019,

Earns Eagle AwardCole Haubenreiser, a recent HSHS class of 2019 graduate has

recently earned the rank of Eagle Boy Scout with Troop 101 fromDarien. His required Eagle project benefited the St. Johns Lutheran

Church in Darien. Cole designed and built from scratch woodenfurniture, designed, built, and installed commercial storage shelving, and lastly painted the

churches youth studies room. Over 200 hours were volunteered to complete the work!After Cole's junior year of high school he became a pilot and logged over 65 piloting hours

during his senior year. Cole is attending University of Dubuque, in Iowa, where he is an AviationFlight major to become a commercial pilot.

Week Sydney Huang. Sydney has beenplaying great tennis as of late! Last yearas a junior (her first year on tennis), sheplayed 4th doubles on Varsity (which is

impressive in and of itself), and this yearhas risen to the top of the lineup, oftenplaying at the first doubles position. OnThursday of this week she represented

the team at the third singles positionagainst conference rival DGS and pulleddown a solid 6-3, 6-1 win against a tough

opponent.

Congrats Sydney on a great week andan awesome senior season so far!

Week Marquez Wesley. Hinsdale Southdefeated Downers Grove South 33-28 ina thrilling game to retain the cannon for

the 3rd consecutive year. Senior outsidelinebacker, Marquez Wesley, was a majorfactor in the victory by intercepting DGS

on the first play of the game and laterintercepting another pass and returning itfor a touchdown. He recorded 6 tackles

and was active all game.
