Course Description: HSM 682. Trends in the Healthcare Industry An in-depth study of significant trends in the healthcare industry and their managerial implications. Weekly reading activities—starting with sections from FutureScan 2014, external website links and videos will be posted at the instructor’s Blackboard Course Management System intranet site for this course—HSM 682 Trends in the Healthcare Industry. Check your Bb site two--three times each week for this course. Beyond your readings and watching of videos, plan to spend two-three hours per week, developing your Memo or Other Activity-Related Response—associated with each Weekly Module which will be aligned with readings from FutureScan 2014 and FutureScan 2015..

Method of Instruction:The principle teaching method will be readings from FutureScan 2014 and 2015, online webinar-video case scenarios on related current Healthcare topics augmented by case studies, webinars, webcasts, dissertation reviews, and Powerpoint presentations.

Other Essentials:An inexpensive jump drive should be purchased for this course OR use the virtual jump drive by establishing an account at www.getdropbox.com or the Microsoft Skydrive account. Graduate students are required to keep files of all coursework prepared for this class. SAVE A COPY OF EVERY FILE CREATED. FILES ARE OFTEN MARKED UNDELIVERABLE for numerous reasons. Your only proof is your backup copy that can be resubmitted. You may also wish to upload (as a backup) your files to the www.getdropbox.com (a free server for file storage).

Assess strategy based upon competitive analysis in decision making.

Critique a sampling of healthcare innovations such as Health Information Exchanges.

Investigate methods and venues for the elimination of healthcare disparities.

Acquire an understanding of the essential (non-clinical) competencies required in today’s healthcare system as well as approaches to professional development in this dynamic field.

Measurements and Method of Evaluation:

Final grades will be based upon the total of earned points for research briefing, online activities associated with HSM activities, readings, and webinars as well as other discussion board activities. No weighted system will be used; rather each assignment will have a designated number of points and the final grade will be determined based upon the following average total point score.

Grading Distribution: A=90-100%, B=80-89%, C=70-79%, D=60-69%, E=59% or <

This timeline is a tentative schedule of the planned assignments for Week 1. Noted updates on the Announcements page and/or an email will be sent. Plan to be on your Blackboard site EVERY week (at least two-three times) of this term. It’s our cyberspace classroom connection. MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING YOUR MSU EMAIL ACCOUNT.

This course introduces graduate students to the constantly changing healthcare industry—trends and issues.

Readings and Weekly Activities will be posted under Required Activities/Weekly Learning Modules button at the Blackboard site. You will be responsible for the assigned reading from the booklet content, any video links associated with each weekly assignment as well as Discussion Forum postings and assigned activity assignments. The assignment window will always be

COURSE ATTENDANCE and POLICIES

Students are expected to have read the assigned weekly chapter material from the Future Scan booklet, and any additional required assignments, in preparation for weekly assessments—usually an Executive Memo Response or a PowerPoint with detailed speaker notes.

All required assignments MUST include a file label that includes student name and course section identifier, at beginning of file, or pages, or as part of document. No document will be accepted under Assignments that does not have a name on the document itself.

No late assignments. Assignments are accepted only on the noted date due or earlier.

Late Assignments will be accepted IF AND ONLY IF prior arrangements are made; Individual cases will be reviewed and a penalty may apply—based upon the reason and justification given.

Any form of cheating – copying and sharing files, – is not permitted. A grade of “E” or 0 will be given for that assignment.

All work is assigned as a measure of your individual performance and not a collaborative effort—unless the activity is so noted as a team/group project.

Face to Face Sections or Online students desiring to Use MSU Labs: MSU’s Network Print Management System provides high-speed laser printing for campus computer labs and the computer classrooms. All users (students, faculty, and staff) pay for printing (using their University ID card) at a printer release station prior to printing. University IDs are issued in ADUC; the information booklet provided with the ID card explains the options for storing cash on the ID card.

Other Requirements:

1. Consistent with department policy, a grade of Incomplete will be granted for documented medical reasons ONLY.

2. The instructor will use the electronic grade book on Blackboard for posting of scores.

3. NO MAKE-UP of Required Activities will be permitted AFTER the scheduled deadlines have past, UNLESS the instructor has granted prior permission. Students who miss an activity because of severe illness (with doctor's excuse) or official university activity may submit a request (via email format) to complete the activity (and submit) earlier than the scheduled test time—or arrange a late submission. Students absent due to participating in University sponsored events must inform the instructor two weeks before the scheduled exam in order for the exam to be administered before the absence. Only official signed University-authorized requests for absence will be accepted.

4. Extra credit is not an option for this class; Exception--bonus points for clear, succinct responses to a posted question in Cyber Cafe.

5. Each student will be required to participate in an HSM Research Briefing associated with a current healthcare topic that has managerial, technological and organizational implications for the USA.

6. Active online participation is important to class success—regardless of whether it be in an online format, hybrid, web-enhanced or face-to-face delivery mode.

For all Sections 001 (Face to Face) Emergency and Campus Safety Statement: Emergency response information will be discussed in class. Students should familiarize themselves with the nearest exit routes in the event evacuation becomes necessary. You should notify your instructor at the beginning of the semester if you have special needs or will require assistance during an emergency evacuation. Academic Honesty: All work you submit for grading must be the result of your own personal effort. Should the instructor identify copyright infringement, source misrepresentation, or multiple submission of the same work by different people, the penalty will be 0 points for all parties involved. It does not matter who copied from whom.

Cheating, fabrication, plagiarism or helping others to commit these acts will not be tolerated. Academic dishonesty will result in severe disciplinary action including, but not limited to, failure of the student assessment item or course, and/or dismissal from MSU. If you are not sure what constitutes academic dishonesty, read The Eagle: Student Handbook or ask your instructor.

Policy for Accommodating Students with Disabilities: Professional staff from MSU Academic Services Center (ASC) coordinates efforts to address accessibility needs and class accommodations with instructors of students who have learning or physical disabilities.
