Fresh new exhibition for OrbitalThanks to Altona Meadows Primary Schools Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden programme, students from Grades 4 to 6 have been growing vegetables and cooking their fresh produce for lunch. Their efforts are celebrated with a new exhibition at the Orbital exhibition space near Aldi at Central Square, Altona Meadows. Principal Bill Reid joined Councillor Carl Marsich to open the exhibition on Tuesday 21 October. The exhibition was curated by Heather van Heerwarden and will run until February 2015.

Dogs on beachesThe weathers hotting up and it will soon be time to bring your togs to the beach. Togs that is.... not dogs. From 1 November to 30 April, to give beachgoers some dog-free time, dogs are restricted from the following areas:

Williamstown Beach (between the Life Saving Club and Sirens Restaurant) and Altona Beach (between Romawi and Mount Streets).

This applies seven days a week between 10am and 9.30pm and $200 penalties apply. So if you do want your dogs to have some time in the sand what options are there? Well, there are designated dog beaches at Burns Reserve, Altona and Doug Grant Reserve, Altona Meadows. Or you can run your dogs outside of the above times, but if you do, please keep your dogs on a leash and collect and dispose of all droppings. For those dogs that just want to run around, whether its sandy or not, there are a number of dog off-leash areas around Hobsons Bay, details of which are on our website. Simply go to www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au and click on the Council tab, then Local Laws and then Animals.

For residents of Brooklyn there was good news last week. A new off leash area is in the pipeline or rather, Pipeline Reserve (adjacent to the Federation Trail) - with funding in this years budget to commence design, preparation and initial works. One of the important reasons for keeping to the prescribed dog off leash areas is to keep your dogs from disturbing the local wildlife. This includes the migratory shorebirds were welcoming back from their summer breeding grounds in Siberia and Alaska. The slightest disturbance can interrupt their feeding routines and cause them a great amount of stress.

Paid parking furoreYarraville traders have vowed legal action against any move by Maribyrnong council to introduce paid parking. The council was due to decide on the proposal at a special meeting last night. Read the decision and reaction at www.maribyrnong.starweekly.com.au.

Four-storey rejection challengedYarraville Villages first four-storey residential proposal will be decided by VCAT. Marwood Developers will take the council to VCAT over its refusal of a fourth storey on the building proposal for 66 Wilson Street. The council unanimously rejected the proposal despite a council report recommending its approval.

Jobs promoter launchedBusiness West 21, launched yesterday, will promote investment and jobs growth in Melbournes west, including Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham.

Driver charged after collisionAn Altona North man, 21, was taken to hospital with a suspected broken arm after an alleged hit-run collision in Altona North on Monday. Police believe he was riding a motorised bicycle in Fourth Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle about 5.30pm. The driver, a 31-year-old Altona North woman, was found nearby and returned a blood- alcohol reading of 0.137 per cent. She has been charged with reckless conduct endangering life, drink driving and failing to remain at an accident scene.

A new custom-built trailer is delivering hope and support to asylum seekers and refugees settling in Melbournes west.

When West Welcome Wagon (WWW) had a trailer stolen earlier this year, it was a major blow for the grassroots community organisations ability to deliver much-needed donations. But Metropolitan Remand Centre prisoners have built a new trailer to get the group back on the road and better able to reach those most in need.

WWW founder and Yarraville resident Mia McGregor said one of the biggest challenges is getting goods out to families living in bare homes, often without electricity.

Having the trailer stolen earlier this year was a great distress to have our own custom-built trailer is going to make the biggest difference.

The Facebook-based group has grown to almost 3000 members, mostly in Melbournes west, in just a year. It has helped almost 300 households, delivering more than 500 beds and 100 bikes, providing 460 food hampers and supporting asylum seekers with English lessons.

Ms McGregor says the group has received incredible support, but she wishes more could be done for families falling through the gaps.

West Welcome Wagon and Hobsons Bay Refugee Network are holding a film fundraiser at The Sun Theatre, Yarraville, at 7pm on November 21. The Good Lie tells of three lost boys from Sudan who make it to America. Tickets: www.trybooking.com/FYFK

Hobsons Bay Residents Association (HBRA) has criticised the impending sale of the former Altona West Primary School site, citing the areas urgent need for a public school that caters for years 10-12.

Meanwhile, Hobsons Bay council wants to retain the former Eastona Primary School in Altona North, where the population is expected to jump 53 per cent by 2031.

The council last week rejected an offer from the Finance and Treasury Department to buy both former school sites, which have been deemed surplus to the Education Departments needs. The council also voted not to buy the former Altona Gate Primary School site in Altona North.

HBRA co-convenor Tony Briffa said Altona did not have a state school catering for years 10-12.

The state government, and indeed the council for supporting the sale, is not thinking about the future needs of the Altona, Seaholme and Altona Meadows community in selling the former Altona West Primary School site.

In fact, we dont have a public high school providing years 10, 11 and 12 in all of Altona, Seaholme and Altona Meadows.

Retaining the former site of the Altona West Primary School means the Altona College has room for expansion, Briffa said.

Altona P-9 College principal Julie Kraus declined to comment.

Councillors said they would continue to

advocate for the former Eastona Primary School in Collins Avenue, Altona North, to be retained for use as a school.

A council officers report stated that recent discussions with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development indicated the classification of this site as surplus to requirements was under ministerial review and may be retained.

Cr Peter Hemphill criticised the state government for not planning for population growth in Altona North.

According to forecasts by .id, the population experts, Altona Norths population is expected to increase from 12,249 to 18,771 by 2031.

Forecasters from .id worked with council planners to predict likely development activity in Altona North.

They predicted 1500 dwellings would be developed on the former Don Smallgoods site between 2016 and 2031, and 300 dwellings on the Eastona Park school site between 2015 and 2025.

Earlier this year, the council bought the former Laverton Primary School site for $2.6 million, excluding GST.

This site will be used for parkland and, most likely, social housing.

    School site sales rejected

The state government is not thinking about the future needs - Tony Briffa Children at Altona Gate Kindergarten in

Altona North are getting a backyard blitz thanks to local high school students.

Bayside P-12 College students are revamping the kinders Walker Close playground as part of a project aimed at making a difference in the community.

Program co-ordinator Tracy James said year 9 students, under the guidance of teacher Jenny Tzikas, were visiting the kinder fortnightly to do gardening and other work.

The program focuses on developing student leadership capacity and a culture of caring and responsibility, she said.

The kindergarten was originally located in Blackshaws Road but moved to the current premises in 2004.

Since then, there have been only minor works to the playground, such as removing a vegie patch and replacing it with a wooden deck in 2013.

Bayside students will sand and paint wood surfaces, clean the sandpit, replace an old bamboo fence-screen with shade cloth, create mosaic wall hangings and build an outdoor kitchen-type play area.

The students organised an out of uniform day and sausage sizzle to raise funds for mosaic tiles, sandpaper, paintbrushes, shade cloth, a sink and wood for the outdoor kitchen area, new sand for the sandpit, and child-friendly plants such as olive trees.

Dentures are a fact of life for many people as age catches up with them, so finding a qualified professional prosthetist may be on the cards to provide a new set of pearly whites.

Ahmed Saoud is the head dental prosthetist at Denture Care Clinic in Altona North and has been a dental technician for more than 15 years and treating locals at the clinic for the past three years.

I enjoy giving patients their smiles back with new teeth, Mr Saoud says.

We make our dentures on-site and use quality materials to provide long-lasting comfortable dentures which often give clients back their confidence.

He added they aim to act as educators for denture services while demystifying the perceived fear of dentures.

The dentures manufactured and fitted at our independent clinic will be created with only the most advanced resins, designed to protect teeth from excessive wear which can cause vertical loss and premature aging. Denture Care Clinic dentures will not stain, chip or break under normal conditions, maintaining their cutting edge and enabling more efficient use, Mr Saoud says.

The Prosthetist makes and fits customised full and partial dentures; implant-retained dentures and mouthguards. He also does repairs and relines and home visits to aged care centres.

We are committed to supporting the local sporting and ageing community. Our key focus is on dental care education and after-sales support.

Patient payment plans are available and specifically designed for clients having dental and orthodontic treatment. The clinic supports the Victorian Denture Scheme, Veterans Affairs and HICAPS.

Our patients receive their initial consultation free so they know what they are up for and what is involved without being out of pocket, Mr Saoud says.

And our modern facilities are accommodating and enable us to provide exemplary customer care.

Denture Care Clinic is a member of the Australian Dental Prosthetists Association.

Denture Care Clinic, at 8 Borrack Square Altona North, opens 9am-5pm Mondays-Fridays and Saturdays and evenings by appointment. Inquiries: 9391 9998 or altonadentureclinic.com.au

Children with a disability and their parents are among the beneficiaries of this years Hobsons Bay Community Fund.

Altona North-based Yooralla West Childrens Services has received $5000 for a parent training program to help mums and dads communicate with their children.

Manager Judith Jones said the money would be used to teach eight families the Hanen program for children with language delays, dubbed It takes two to talk.

Trained speech pathologists will be running the program we just use the funding to be able to have the staff to run the program, she said.

Ruth Culph, who completed the program last year after being on the waiting list for a year, said it helped her interact with her son, Hamish, who has Down syndrome.

She said the program helped in practical ways, such as finding out what Hamish wanted to eat at meal times.

When the kids arent speaking, its really easy to just give them food and not ask what they want or ask if theyre full, because they cant tell you.

We were given lots of help, so you might offer choices and see if the kid will indicate what he wants to eat rather than just presuming.

Similarly, Ms Culph said she might make a twinkle action with her fingers to see if Hamish responds. If he gets excited and claps, it means he wants her to sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Fund chairman Hayden Raysmith said two organisations helping children with learning difficulties were among this years 11 grant recipients.

Yooralla West Childrens Services will focus on helping parents develop skills to help their

pre-school children not be left behind, while the Altona Primary School Parents Association will provide a 10-week drama program for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, he said.

In its largest funding pool yet, the community fund is allocating $30,678 in grants to 11 causes, including womens refuges, early-learning programs for children with a disability or learning difficulty, equipment for the Mens Shed program, entertainment for residents in

aged-care facilities and support for people with anxiety disorders.

Now in its ninth year, the fund has provided more than $120,000 in grants to 55 community groups. The Hobsons Bay Community Fund grants night will be hosted this year at the Kooringal Golf Club, which has joined Signcraft, Qenos, ComptonGreen, UMS and Star Weekly as corporate supporters. The event is on November 12, 5-7pm.

People riding petrol-powered bicycles could be fined for riding an unlicensed motorbike and a raft of related offences say Hobsons Bay police, amid mounting complaints from residents.

An Altona Meadows resident, who asked not to be named, said she had been run off a path by noisy bikes travelling about 70km/h.

Theyre up and down all weekend and its just ridiculous, she said.

They come straight at you on the footpaths they dont slow down or try and move out of your way. Then theres the noise disturbance as well. Were not talking about kids playing these are really, really noisy.

One lady shes in Altona North and they gather across from her house theres about five of them. Shes too scared to say anything, but theyre constantly waking up her children.

Just have a little bit of respect for other people. Have your enjoyment but respect other peoples enjoyment.

One woman said she was driving down Queen Street doing 70km/h, and [a man on a motorised bicycle] overtook her and then was trying to play dodgems with her on Maidstone Street.

Theyre dangerous, theyre illegal and they shouldnt be on the footpath. But it wont stop.

Inspector Richard Paterson said almost all motorised bikes on roads would be legally defined as motorbikes.

With the warmer weather upon us, Hobsons Bay police have become concerned with the number of bicycles getting around our suburban streets with petrol motors fitted to them, he said.

If those motors have a power output larger than 200 watts, which is only .2 of a kilowatt, then the bike becomes, by legislative definition, a motorcycle.

The smallest of engines from whipper snippers and other petrol-powered garden tools exceed this 200-watt limit.

Motorcycles are required to comply with the registration requirements and also the safety standards.

Riders need a motorcycle licence and an approved motorcycle helmet.

He said a range of offences and fines applied, from $148 for riding on a path to $738 for unlicensed riding.

Riders with prior offences for unlicensed riding or driving could have their motorcycle impounded, while drink-driving on a motorised bicycle could result in loss of licence.

A youth leader from Seddon is helping other young African-Australians living in Melbournes west to share their stories.

Fostin Nshimirimana, who performs as Fofo, has mentored young hip-hop enthusiasts via the RAP3021 program and is studying youth work at Victoria University.

The 20-year-old also has a story of his own and has been recognised in a new book, Inspiring Stories by Young Victorians, a collection of stories from more than 60 young people participating in state government programs.

Mr Nshimirimana was four when he was snatched from his Burundian family by rebel forces and forced to become a child soldier. He

trained for nine years before fleeing to a refugee camp in Tanzania in 2006.

Arriving in Australia in 2007, Mr Nshimirimana learnt English and set about building a new life. He uses hip-hop song and dance as a way to make something positive of his experiences and sees the power of creativity for other young people.

Im interested in creating a space for young people to come through and be themselves, he said. It can be really hard for young people to be creative.

More than 30,000 Victorian children are forced to turn to charity to have enough food to eat, according to a Yarraville-based food charity.

The Foodbank Hunger Report 2014, released last week, reveals 32,300 children are among the 108,700 people relying on Foodbank each month.

A shortfall in food and resources means charities assisted by Foodbank are forced to turn away a further 8600 people, including 2700 children, as demand for food relief rises.

Working poor low-income families are the largest group seeking help, followed by single-parent families and the unemployed.

The Foodbank report found access to meals contributes to improvements in emotional well being, sense of self-worth, social relationships, academic performance and overall standard of living.

Foodbank Australia chief executive Jason Hincks said research highlighted the overwhelming community benefits that even a kilogram of food can deliver.

No child should have to worry about where their next meal will come from, yet a shocking number of Aussie kids are in this position every year, he said.

Foodbank provides almost 60 per cent of food used by Australian welfare agencies across the country. Last year Foodbank delivered the equivalent of 26,301 meals each day in Victoria.

A cricketing crash course is under way in Footscray as part of the areas first all-girls cricket program.

Melbourne Renegades player Matt Short was recently on hand at the first of six In2Cricket sessions at Merv Hughes Oval, teaching girls the finer points of the game.

The sessions, part of Maribyrnong councils Active Maribyrnong sports program, coincide with a new grants program aimed at getting more juniors into cricket.

The Cricket Victoria-funded Active Maribyrnong Junior Cricket Participation Grants Program is cutting new club registration fees for juniors by 75 per cent as well as providing $40 cricket clothes allowances for families with health care cards.

Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles expects the grants to boost junior cricket.

Council is proud to be supporting junior cricketers and increasing participation in sport and recreation within the City of Maribyrnong, he said.

Physical activity plays a vitally important role in community life and councils long-term plan is to foster a vibrant and active community.
