I am truly privileged and honoured to have been elected your Mayor for the 2014/2015 term.

I have great vision for the future to work hard to tackle our citys serious issues, such as youth unemployment, problem gambling, violence against women and tackling the infrastructure gap.

My vision is for a city that still beats with hard working blue collar, but is also enterprising. I see a city that can be a job creating machine. We have industrial land to attract high end, clean industries. We have strategic land and can look into public private partnerships. We have a university, a hospital, and a national football team. We have untapped commercial potential in the Footscray CBD to attract businesses out of the capital city and into the Bulldog city.

I would say the City of Maribyrnong is the last bastion of inner city gentrication, but lets not become just another apartment city, lets become the Economic Powerhouse of the West.

My vision is for rough diamonds like Braybrook to be on a level playing eld where we have less pokie machines, less marginalization, and more urban renewal and job opportunities. I believe renewing the public housing stock in Braybrook can create new jobs and rejuvenate tired public assets.

My vision is for a city that has less grafti and more street art. I need the help of the community too, to ght complacency!

My vision is for a city with a world class hospital. The Footscray Hospital has been neglected for decades, with 60 year old buildings still operating with no upgrades. I no longer want to see our citys most vulnerable being treated like door mats, and I say it is time for this to change!

I would also like to say that I am a very proud Vietnamese-Australian. I dont say this out of tokenism, or for some warm multicultural gesture. As the Mayor of the City of Maribyrnong, I offer my words of leadership to say all races, faces, creeds, colours and religions are welcome with open arms in our great city.

As our children grow, our community centres grow with themThe Braybrook Community Centre on Churchill Ave has been undergoing a major transformation into an incredible, multi use community hub that centralises a range of services for every member of the family.

Due for completion in early 2015, the $12.5 million redevelopment will deliver Braybrooks rst ever library, an integrated early years centre, maternal and child health services, a sports pavilion, community and social spaces, meeting rooms, a mens shed, a caf.

With the 2015 kindergarten year fast approaching, now is the time to register your four year old for the kindergarten program at Braybrooks new Early Learning Centre, part of the new development.

The total cost of the Braybrook Community Centre redevelopment is $12.5million. The project was jointly funded by Council ($9million) and the State Government ($3.5million).

Another key Council project is the new Maidstone Child and Family Centre, which provides maternal and child health services, kindergarten services, a toy library, a community room and specialist consultation rooms. Children and families have been delighted with the new $4.7 Maidstone Child and Family Centre, which re-opened in October 2014.

A community Open Day will be held on Saturday 6 December 2014 at 11am to ofcially launch the new community facility with childrens activities and a community barbeque between 11am and 1pm.

To register for kindergarten contact Councils Central Registration System at [email protected] or 9688 0116.

A 10-year plan to transform Footscray into a university town is full steam ahead a year after the project was announced.

Victoria University and Maribyrnong councils joint Footscray University Town project aims to position the suburb as an innovative gateway to Melbournes rapidly growing west. It also plans to link VUs two Footscray campuses and 20,000 students with an active string of cafes, businesses, parks and plazas.

A public discussion tonight will explore rejuvenation already under way, including the launch of the $2 million MetroWest centre on Nicholson Street Mall and 12-storey, 500-bed student accommodation opposite the Footscray Park campus, which is due to open in 2016.

Were already using the creative energy of the university and the areas existing and planned creative arts and sports infrastructure to kick-start projects aimed at attracting more businesses, jobs and services, engaging residents and traders. Above all, were changing the perception of Footscray, VUs vice-president of government relations, Dr Rob Brown, said.

A Footscray University Town public discussion, featuring Creative City concept founder Charles Landry and other speakers, will be held at Victoria University, Footscray Nicholson campus, from 5-7 tonight. Register at www.vu.edu.au/fut-events.

New Maribyrnong mayor Nam Quach has vowed to improve the councils performance during his year at the helm.

The Stony Creek ward councillor was elected at a special meeting of council last Wednesday night, edging out Labor councillor Martin Zakharov four votes to three.

Cr Quach and the three other independent councillors again banded together to freeze out Labor, which held a stranglehold over Maribyrnong until the 2012 election.

Cr Quach takes the mayoral reins from fellow first-time councillor Grant Miles.

Were exactly halfway through our four-year term and I think were doing OK, but theres plenty of room for improvement, he said.

Weve almost finished building a new library and community hub in Braybrook and weve activated more truck curfews in Footscray and Yarraville.

Cr Quach spoke of a bright future for the area but of the need to tackle issues such as growing youth unemployment, problem gambling, domestic violence, closing the infrastructure gap and fixing Footscray Hospital.

My vision is for a city with a world-class hospital, he said. Footscray Hospital has been neglected for decades with 60-year-old buildings still operating with no upgrades.

I no longer want to see our citys most vulnerable being treated like doormats, and I say it is time for this to change.

Cr Quach also called for the community to band together to reject bigotry and prejudice.

I offer my words of leadership to say all races, faces, creeds, colors and religions are welcome in our great city, he said.

River ward councillor Cameron McDonald was elected unopposed as deputy mayor.

The Hobsons Bay Refugee Network (HBRN) and West Welcome Wagon (WWW) are holding a fundraising film night in Yarraville to help asylum seekers set up new homes.

Ann Morrow, co-founder of the HBRN, said some proceeds would help asylum seekers in the community who are receiving 89 per cent of Australias lowest dole payment as little as $56 a day for a couple. A screening of The Good Lie will be held at the Sun Theatre from 6.30pm on November 21. Starring Reese Witherspoon as an employment counsellor, the movie tells of three young Sudanese men making a new life in America.

WWWs Sue Cram said money raised would be used to buy reconditioned washing machines and fridges for asylum seeker families released into community detention.

HBRN helps with finding suitable housing and providing white goods and bicycles, she said. WWW supplies donated furniture, food, clothing, kitchen requirements and childrens needs, including toys.

The groups help asylum seekers enrol their children in school, show families how to use local community and health services, encourage them to make friends with their neighbours, and give some free English conversation classes.

In the quiet comfort of a Williamstown hotel, Patrick Walsh pores over letters from refugees being held at Broadmeadows detention centre.

Its an intimidating pile and a harrowing read.

Some of the stuff thats written, its just heartbreaking, Mr Walsh said.

Theyre talking about how, back when they were at home, some of their family were murdered in front of them and how that made them feel. Theres some pretty dark stuff in there.

But then theres other stuff where theyll be out in the garden at the detention centre, and [one man] has written a page about how a flower blossomed.

When they can, Mr Walsh, a refugee advocate, and his wife visit the letter writers in detention.

Some of the people that we visit have been in detention for more than six years, he said. All of the people we visit have got refugee status.

He said the refugees appreciated the smallest act of kindness.

We took in some pineapple and a packet of Tim Tams, because Tim Tams always win, Mr Walsh said..

I dont think the Tim Tams were touched; they were absolutely, wow, pineapple. Even the kids went crazy about the pineapple.

Mr Walsh said refugees often reciprocated by offering him what little food they had.

They get given a very small allowance to do their own cooking. They buy their own ingredients and they cook their own traditional meals.

When we visit, there hasnt been a time when they havent pulled a meal out for us and theyll feed us. Ive asked them why and they

    Words from behind bars

say, Youre in our home.On November 16, Mr Walsh will run 15

kilometres in the City2Sea race to raise money for long-term and indefinite detainees. Money will go towards costs for clothing and food, and for detainees to send money home to support

their families. This is a cause close to my heart, but there is no official charity specifically for this group of detainees, so I am collecting money myself and will present it to them once it has been collected, Mr Walsh said.

RACV tourism awardsThe Captains Retreat in Williamstown is not retreating anywhere. Far from it - the bed and breakfast is in the ascendancy,

having just been announced as the winner of the RACV Tourism Awards, Peoples Choice Award for Guest Satisfaction. It also featured in RACVs top 101 places to stay in Victoria. The heritage listed house which has five rooms (all with ensuite) was originally built in 1862 and then extensively increased in size for a sea captain and his family taking residence in 1880.

Bruce and Percy StreetDrainage, kerb and channel works are progressing well along Bruce Street

The state government has dashed hopes that it may match Labors commitment to a new inner-west high school.

Education Minister Martin Dixon has written to the SKY High lobby group telling them analysis of the school network suggested there was already capacity to meet projected demand.

I understand Labor has pledged $15 million to undertake a feasibility study to consider the merit of a pre-school to post-graduate education precinct in Footscray, which would then conditionally progress to master planning, he wrote. This seems to be an excessive and convoluted approach.

He called Labors commitment uncosted, unplanned and undeliverable.

SKY High president Melissa Horne said the announcement was disappointing given recent government figures showed the number of school-aged children in the Maribyrnong council area soaring from 12,382 now to 20,831 within 17 years.

These figures show the question isnt whether our kids need a new high school, its a question of when it should be built, she said.

Its all well and good for the minister to criticise the oppositions announcement, but it is nothing but a cynical attempt to divert attention from the fact that this government has committed nothing for the needs of SKY kids now and into the future.

New blow for high school bid

Altona Primary School pupils with autism will have specialist drama classes, thanks to a $3920 grant from the Hobsons Bay Community Fund.

The 10-week drama program, for pupils with autism and/or a learning or physical disability, will be taught by Petra Glieson, who has appeared in Australian television dramas including City Homicide, Neighbours and Blue Heelers.

What I hope the children get out of it is learning new skills in terms of helping themselves to feel confident communicating with others, Glieson said.

They do respond really well to drama. Because its such a physical and kinesthetic way of learning, it almost helps the brain to absorb what theyre learning through the physical work they do.

I also think the sense of play always supports a young persons learning, no matter what needs they have.

Kathie Karapalidis, the mother of a former pupil at the school, was instrumental in obtaining the grant. She said many students with disabilities didnt qualify for state government funding and would benefit from a program to help them communicate and socialise.

My son, who has high-functioning autism [formerly known as Aspergers], is a classic example of a child who is not funded and who flies under the radar at school, she said.

He struggles with basic fundamental socialisation issues and its programs like this which could build the skills he needs to express himself to people.

Unfortunately, Lee doesnt attend Altona Primary School any more so will not be able to take part in this course. But Im so pleased

A 20-year dream for a welcome arch at the entrance to Footscrays Little Saigon quartier is on the verge of being realised.

The Footscray Welcome Arch will celebrate the contribution made by the Vietnamese community to Footscray over decades.

A $420,000 state government contribution was announced on Thursday by multicultural affairs minister Matthew Guy alongside a bevy of election hopefuls.

The arch will become the gateway to the famous Little Saigon precinct, paying tribute to the generations of migrants who have made Footscray a hub of Vietnamese culture in Melbourne, Mr Guy said.

Maribyrnong council has offered $300,000 towards the arch and a further $200,000 is being raised by the community.

Maribyrnong mayor Nam Quach said the funding follows 20 years of campaigning for a welcome arch by Footscrays Vietnamese community. You only need to walk down Barkly Street or shop at Little Saigon Market to see the significant connection the Vietnamese community has with Footscray and the city of Maribyrnong more broadly, he said.

Western region MLCs Bernie Finn and Andrew Wellsbury were at the announcement.

    TAKE A FRESH LOOK

One persons trash is Carolyn Cardinets treasure.

Cardinet is the first artist chosen for the Footscray Artsbox Artist residency, happily creating away in a custom-fitted shipping container in front of the Paisley Street library.

The visual artist collects discarded and unnoticed objects, things she considers the rejected mass-produced objects of everyday life.

She assembles this reclaimed refuse into sculptural forms, drawing connections between the objects and the environment from which they were extracted.

For her Footscray residency project, Cardinet has been collecting waste from local streets, which she will turn into a series of totem poles.

Cardinet says she feels her work draws a connection between the areas Aboriginal past and the present.

She is inviting any curious passersby to drop by the studio and discuss the work in progress.

The residency will finish on November 20, with Cardinets monument to Footscray to be displayed in the library courtyard.

Maribyrnong councillor Grant Miles said the Artsbox would give the Maribyrnong community a new vibrant, intimate and inclusive arts venue, which would be home to artists-in-residence, exhibitions, and creative workshops throughout the year.

Created by designer and fabricator Derek John, the Artsbox will be at the Paisley Street site for up to 18 months, before moving to different locations around Maribyrnong.

A big house often means loads of extra chores so buying a smaller, low-maintenance unit such as this one will give the new owner more time to do what they love. The brick-veneer residence is ideal for first-home buyers or investors and has two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, a bathroom, laundry with toilet, lounge room with wall gas heater, a separate meals zone with exposed brick wall, and kitchen with adequate storage and bench space. Upstairs, living/dining areas beneath the cool, clean lines of a cathedral ceiling are complemented by an open plan kitchen and a north facing deck. Water tank, secure storage and an off street parking space complete a property defined by an astute approach in a cul-de-sac setting close to Williamstown Beach station, schools, the Botanic Gardens and the beach.
