This document is divided into sevensections:

Current design trends favour the texture-plastered look with monolithic wallsfrequently highlighted with a variety of architectural design features.

Harditex is the ideal cladding for a monolithic finish, because it providesyou with the comfort and peace of mind that comes with the stability andstrength of James Hardie fibre cement. In other words, the best of bothworlds.

When using Harditex the only limiting factor is your imagination. It can beused to create anything from subtle beauty to strong bold statements thatmake the most of colour, texture and style. So the latest design trends areyours for the asking.

Design flexibility with Harditex is further enhanced with the use ofpolystyrene shapes which provide a wide range of options for architecturaldetail. Please phone the James Hardie Building Systems Helpline on 0800PANEL4U (726 3548) for more information on polystyrene shapes.Polystyrene shapes are applied by the coating contractor of your choice.

The Harditex base sheet, readily identified by its pink colour in its ‘raw’ state,has been developed to provide a durable substrate for a range of texturedcoatings.The coating of your choice is applied by a coating contractorlicensed by the coating manufacturer. Section 7 gives further details.

Harditex is available in a regular 7.5mm sheet which is ideal for mostresidential applications.Where there is a need for superior strength, finish andimpact resistance, such as in light commercial construction, or some residentialhomes, 9mm Harditex Premium is the answer. Installation is the same as for7.5mm Harditex , so the choice is yours.

Harditex 7.5mm and Premium 9mm Checklist

James Hardie Harditex 7.5mm and 9mm is integrally coloured pink to identify the product.

• Framing – studs, plates and nogs must be dry, true and straight prior to fixing sheets (page 8)

• All sheet edges must be fully supported by framing (page 8) (generally sheets are fixed vertically).

• Studs 600mm centres maximum, nogs 1200mm centres maximum (page 8)

• Sheets are to be fixed, stopped and coated only when dry (page 5)

• Stack sheets flat in a dry area and protect from damage (page 5)

• When cutting, drilling, or grinding, safety glasses and an approved dust mask must be worn (pages 6 and 7)

• A breather-type building paper complying with NZS 2295 must be used behind Harditex sheets (page 9)

• In two-storey construction a horizontal control joint must be used at floor joist level (page 8)

• Sheet edges should not coincide with sides of doors and windows unless they are control or expansion joints. (Controljoints 5.4m centres, expansion joints 14.4m centres) (page 10)

• Vertical joints are to be offset when walls are more than one sheet high (page 10)

• The tops of windows and doors must have head flashings (page 10)

• Gap between sheets is 1-2mm (page 11)

• Nail sheets from the centre of the sheets outward to avoid drumminess (page 13)

• Nailing – 150mm centres to perimeter and centre of sheet, 12mm from edges and 50mm from corner (nails 40 x 2.8mm galvanised flat-head or stainless steel driven flush with sheet surface) (page 12)

• Internal corners – use Inseal 3259 (80mm wide and 1.5mm thick behind sheets) (page 18)

• Bracing ratings have been determined by BRANZ tests and ratings are shown on page 19

• Stainless steel nails (40mm x 2.8mm) must be used for all bracing panels and in severe coastal environments (pages 21and 34)

• All stopped joints must have both edges recessed. Control joints should have square edges (page 15)

• Sheets must be coated within 3 months of fixing (page 34)

• External corners – use PVC external corner mould – perforated (page 18)

• Colours must have a light-reflective value (LRV) of 40% minimum regardless of gloss level (page 37)

Product descriptionHarditex is a sheet materialmanufactured in New Zealand byJames Hardie from fibre cement whichis a composition of treated cellulosefibre, Portland cement, finely groundsand and water. Following forminginto sheets the product is cured byhigh-pressure steam autoclaving.

Harditex 7.5mm and 9mm thick isused as the exterior cladding to timberand steel framing whilst also being theexterior bracing system (for timberframe only) when jointed and coated.

The product is identified by the fixingpattern printed on the face of thesheets, by a pink colour tintthroughout the thickness and by thename Harditex printed on thereverse face of the 7.5mm sheet.

Harditex Premium 9mm sheets havethe name Harditex Premium printedon the face side of the sheet.

Harditex Premium has a sanded faceand is used where superior finish,strength and impact resistance aredemanded.

New Zealand StandardHarditex is manufactured to conformto NZS/AS 2908.2-1992: CelluloseCement Products - Flat Sheets.

Installation – technicaldetailsHarditex must be installed inaccordance with the details of thespecification. James Hardie hasevaluated a number of proprietaryjoint and coating systems.Thesesystems must be applied by licensedapplicators nominated by the coatingmanufacturer.A list of proprietary

jointing and coating systems is givenon page 40.A Harditex installationvideo is available on request fromJames Hardie.

Sheet bracingHarditex 7.5mm and 9mm sheets aresuitable sheet materials for wall bracingin terms of NZS 3604. For full detailsof the Harditex bracing systems referto pages 19-33.

Sheet propertiesThe Harditex cladding sheet is alightweight fibre cement substratewhich is resistant to permanentmoisture damage, and which will notrot or burn.The sheet is securely fixedto the timber or steel framing bynailing or screwing.

Sheet edge finishThe sheets have stepped recesses on bothsides and one end to take a reinforcedflush joint detail applied by the coatingcontractor.This allows for a monolithicfinish of both vertical and horizontaljoint details. (Refer Fig. 1.)

Sheet mass and moisturecontentThe approximate mass of 7.5mmHarditex at equilibrium moisturecontent (EMC) is 10.7 kg/m2, 9mm is13.4 kg/m2.

Harditex sheets must be allowed todry to EMC before fixing to framing,otherwise drying shrinkage can occurwhich will be detrimental to thefinished job.

NOTE: Dry Harditex sheets vary inmoisture content with the seasons andprevailing weather conditions.As a guide, adry sheet can vary between 6% moisturecontent in summer and 14% in winter.

The sheets are also defined as havingan equilibrium moisture contentwhere the sheet is under conditions of25°C and a 55% relative humidity.

Fire propertiesHarditex will not burn and has thefollowing Early Fire Hazard Indices(tested to AS 1530 part 3 1982).

NOTE: Zero is the best possibleresult.

C3 Spread of FireThe Harditex substrate for exteriortexture coatings with a surface finishcoating of not more than 1mm inthickness is considered to meet theperformance provisions of NZBCC3.3.5 when used to clad allbuildings.

When the applied surface finishcoating is more than 1mm inthickness, the coating manufacturer

must be consulted to obtainIgnitability Index and/or non-combustibility data for the substratecoating system. Performancerequirements are given in C3/AS1Table 2.

Handling and storageHarditex sheets must be stacked on asmooth, level surface. Edges andcorners must be protected fromdamage. Carry sheets on edge. (ReferFig. 2.) Store under cover and keep dryprior to fixing, jointing and coating.

CuttingSuitable cutting methods are ‘score-and-snap’, hand guillotine, handsawing, power sawing and theHardishear power cutter.

Score-and-snap‘Score-and-snap’ is a fast and efficientmethod of cutting using JamesHardie’s special tungsten-tipped ‘score-and-snap’ knife. (Refer Fig. 3.)

• Preferably score from the face sideof the sheet.

• Position the straight-edge along theline of the cut.

• Score against the straight-edge andrepeat the action to obtain adequatedepth for a clean break – normallyone-third of the sheet thickness.

• Snap upwards to achieve break.

• Clean up edges with a rasp ifnecessary.

Hand guillotineThe Bentley hand guillotine producesclean, straight edges. Make the guillotinecut on the off-cut side of the line toallow for the thickness of the blade.(Refer Fig. 4.)

Hand sawingHand sawing is suitable for generalcutting operations and for small cuts,notchings or small penetrations.

Preferably use an old handsaw.A quickforward jabbing action is best.

For neatness, mark out the cuts to bemade on the face side of the sheet.Where small notches are to be made,cut the two sides with the handsaw orhand guillotine, score along the backwith the ‘score-and-snap’ knife andsnap upwards. (Refer Fig. 5.)

Power sawing, site recessingand hole formingSafety precautionsWhen cutting, drilling or grinding,safety glasses and a dust mask mustalways be worn.This can be either adisposable P2 dust mask or a half maskwith a disposable cartridge.The maskmust fit properly and be approved foruse with dust.The mask must berepaired or replaced as necessary andcleaned often.

All dry power-cutting operations mustbe carried out in open-air situations orin well ventilated spaces and dustextraction equipment must be fitted tothe dry-cutting tool.

All aspects of wet and dry cuttingmust comply with the latestregulations of the Occupational Safetyand Health (OSH) division of theLabour Department. (Refer to‘Recommended safe workingpractices’, page 7.)

Power sawingPower cutting using a dry diamond orcarborundum saw blade gives anacceptable edge.

Clamp a straight-edge to the sheet andrun the saw base plate along thestraight-edge when making the cut.

Hardishear power cutterA Hardishear power-cutting tool canbe used for 7.5mm and 9mmHarditex. (Refer Fig. 6.)

Site recessingWhere it is necessary to produce aground recess detail on site, use aportable angle grinder fitted with astrong, thick carborundum blade orsimilar and a dust extraction unit fittedto a vacuum cleaner. Do all edgegrinding outside in a well-ventilatedarea. Run down the edge of the faceto produce a stepped recessapproximately 40mm wide but notexceeding 1.5mm at its deepest point.(Refer Fig. 7.)

A suitable tool for this is the HitachiEasy Bevel (refer Fig. 8), available fromAccent Tools, 232 Bush Rd,Albany,Auckland, phone (09) 415-2545, ormajor Hitachi distribution outlets.

Hole formingSmall rectangular or circular holes canbe achieved by drilling a series of smallholes around the perimeter of the holethen tapping out the waste pieces fromthe sheet face.Tap carefully to avoiddamage to sheets, and clean roughedges with a rasp. (Refer Fig. 9.)

Large rectangular openings, such as forwall ventilators, can be made by thefollowing method:

• Mark out the hole on the face sideof the sheet.

• Drill a hole in each corner asshown in Fig. 10.

• Score to the outside of the holes tohalf the sheet depth.

• Turn sheet over and score thereverse face to half the depth usingthe drilled holes as a reference.

• Knock out the scored material toform the hole. (Refer Fig. 10.)

Alternatively, large rectangular holescan be formed with a 110mm-diameter diamond-blade saw.

For smooth, clean-cut circular holes:

• Mark the centre of the hole on thesheet.

• Pre-drill a ‘pilot’ hole.

• Using the pilot hole as a guide, cutthe hole to the appropriatediameter with a tungsten-tippedring cutter fitted to a heavy-dutyelectric drill. Sandvik ring-cuttingkits or similar are available for thispurpose.

Breathing in fine silica dust liberated when working with products such as fibre cement, clay and concrete is hazardous.Over time, usually a number of years, this may result in lung bronchitis, silicosis and lung cancer. Work safely with fibrecement sheets by following the precautions described below.

• Minimise dust when cutting sheets, by using either Score-and-Snap knife, Bentley hand guillotine or Heavy DutyHardishear.

• When using other power tools or abrasive hand tools, wear approved personal protective equipment, i.e., P1 or P2 dustmask and safety goggles.

Section 2: Framing

General requirementsNOTE: For Harditex bracing systemsframing requirements refer to page 20.

Correct design of the framework andcareful consideration of the sheet set-out (refer page 10) to minimise jointswill significantly contribute to thelong-term success of all flush-jointedwall systems.Allowance must be madefor the provision of both horizontaland vertical control joints andexpansion joints at the design stage(refer pages 15-17).

All Harditex sheet edges must befully supported by the framing.Framing must be rigid and not rely onthe Harditex for stability.

All studs and nogs must be checkedwith a long straight-edge for line andface accuracy to ensure the timberstud wall has a true and accurateoutside face before the Harditex

sheet is fixed (refer Table 3, page 9).

Harditex must not be used in full polehouse construction where excessivestructural movement could beencountered. It can be used on theupper level of pole platformconstruction where the polesterminate at the underside of the floorlevel.

Timber frameAll timber framing must be inaccordance with NZS 3604 Code ofPractice for Light Timber FrameBuildings.

Specific design to NZS 4203:1992 andNZS 3603:1993 can also beundertaken providing:

• The framing centres do not exceedthose given in this specification.

• The framing member widthsconform to this specification.

Standard green frame or kiln-driedtimber can be used for single-storey ordouble-storey construction with thefollowing exceptions:1. When the inter-storey wall height

exceeds the sheet length andhorizontal joints need to beintroduced, all timber framing mustbe kiln dried to minimise verticalshrinkage as this can causehorizontal joint pouting.

2. When the one sheet spans from topto bottom plate of the same storey,standard green frame can be used.

3. Standard green frame or kiln-driedtimber can be used for floor joists.Because green floor joists can havesignificant shrinkage and kiln-driedjoists can also move, a horizontalcontrol joint must be located atthe floor joist level as shown inFigs 25, 26 or 27.

4. Harditex must not be fixed totimber framing with a moisturecontent in excess of 24% and forfully air-conditioned buildingsmoisture content must not exceed18% in accordance with NZS3602:1990.

NOTE: Kiln-dried timber will minimiseshrinkage.This is particularly important formulti-storey buildings and applicationswhich are more than one sheet length inheight.

Refer also to ‘Structural details’, page10, for further information.Timberframing must be either ex 50mmwide, or when kiln-dried is used,35mm minimum finished size atintermediate studs and 45mm wide atall sheet joints to give sufficient widthto fix sheets at joints. Studs must be atmaximum 600mm centres betweencontinuous top and bottom plates andnogs at maximum 1200mm centres.(Refer Fig. 22.)

SPECIAL NOTE: 35mm-wide kiln-dried timber must not be used at anysheet cladding or lining joints becauseof insufficient nailing width.

Frame set-outIt will be more economical when thetimber is pre-cut or set out to suit theexterior cladding rather than theinterior lining. For a typical exampleof this refer Fig. 11.

Batten requirementsBattens for fixing the sheets arerequired when the sheets are fixedover:

• Gypsum board or fire-rated gypsumboard

• Softboard, polystyrene or similarsheets

• Concrete, masonry block or brickwalls.

Batten specification• Timber battening is to have a

minimum thickness of 40mm togive adequate sheet nailpenetration.

• Steel battens are to be a minimumof 72mm wide x 23mm deep x0.55mm thick and to have abearing surface of 37mm. Battensare to be galvanised steel (257g/m2

zinc coating) and fixed tomanufacturer’s specifications.

All battening centres and sheet fixingis to be strictly in accordance with theframing and fixing required by thisspecification. Care must be taken toensure the battens are packed andaligned to give a true even surface forthe sheets to be fixed. Check the faceof the battens with a long straight-edge before fixing the sheets.

Building paperA breather-type building papercomplying with NZS 2295, asrequired by NZS 3604, must be fixedto the outside face of timber framingbefore fixing the Harditex sheet.Note that for clarity building paper isgenerally not shown in the drawings inthis brochure.

Curved applicationsHarditex can be used for curvedapplications.The minimumrecommended radius for convex orconcave fitted sheets of 7.5mm and9mm thickness is 1800mm.The sheetsmust be bent only along the length.

NOTE: The framing is to be closed up to400mm centres for curved applications togive extra support to the curve.

Kiln-dried framing must be usedwhen horizontal sheet joints areintroduced into the height of thecurved frame.

Exterior frame straightnessTo achieve a visually acceptable finishto the textured Harditex the framestraightness tolerances listed in Table 3must be used.

Bracing sheets stoppedbelow top plateWhere bracing sheets are stoppedbelow the level of the top plate, referto Fig. 49 for framing details.

Section 3: Sheet layout • Fixing

Structural details• Harditex cladding systems are

suitable for both commercial anddomestic applications.These mustbe limited to two storeys in heightunless specific design is undertakenfor the attachment of theHarditex sheets to the structure.This is because the Harditex

sheets form a very rigid elementand will act as a structuraldiaphragm. If a high wall isincorrectly designed the lateralforces on the building may beabsorbed by the Harditex sheetsbefore the designed structuralbracing systems, which could leadto serious damage to the sheetfixing and jointing.This aspect mustbe structurally considered by anengineer before work of greaterthan two storeys is undertaken.Harditex has substantial sheetbracing performance (refer topage 19).

• All sheets must be installedvertically for timber frameconstruction as this method givesthe best overall performance.

• Sheets may, however, be laidhorizontally for timber frame whena depth of cladding not more than1200mm high is required (onewidth of sheet). Examples arefascias, spandrels or narrow bands ofcladding along the building. Referalso to ‘Curved applications’, page 9

Door and window openingsWhere sheet joints are above and/orbelow door or window lines, jointsmay crack due to structuralmovement. Fix sheets across door andwindow openings so sheet edges donot coincide with the side of thewindow or door, then cut away waste.(refer Fig. 12.)

An alternative method toaccommodate this possibility is toprovide an expressed joint at windowedges flashed with Inseal or a sealant-filled joint. (Refer Figs 23 and 24.)

When Harditex is fixed more thanone sheet high on large walls the jointsmust be offset. (Refer Fig. 13.)

FlashingsThe tops of windows and doors mustbe flashed with a head flashing (referFigs 14 and 15). Use pre-shapedaluminium flashings.The sides of thewindows must be sealed with Inseal3109 6mm x 10mm strips or apaintable silicone.

The Inseal strips are adhered to thewindow overlap before installation(refer Fig. 16).

When silicone sealant seals are usedthe continuous bead of sealant isapplied under the window overlapbefore the window is fixed (referFig. 16).

NOTE: Silicone applied as a fillet to thewindow edge and onto the cladding is notan effective weathering method and mustnot be used.

When aluminium joinery is used sillflashings give good long-termprotection (refer Fig. 17).

The sill flashing needs the end turnedup to be effective (refer Fig. 18).

Ground clearanceSlab on groundThe concrete slab floor-to-grounddimension must be 150mm minimumto comply with paragraph EI/ASI2.0.1(a) of the New Zealand BuildingCode.

The sheet must finish no closer to theground than shown in Fig. 19 or thealternative detail in Fig. 20 or, ontimber pile, as shown in Fig. 21. In nocase can the Harditex be taken closerthan 50mm to the finished ground,whether paved or unpaved.

Timber pilesWhen timber-piled foundations areused, the Harditex can be carried towithin 50mm of the finished groundlevel (refer Fig. 21).

FixingNail at 150mm centres to theperimeter of sheets and intermediatestuds and nogs (refer Fig. 22). Nailsmust be hammer driven flush with thesheet surface. Do not fix closer than12mm to the sheet edge or 50mm tothe corner of the sheet. Do notoverdrive the nails below the sheetsurface as this can weaken the nails’holding.

The jointed panel must be limited insize by the use of vertical andhorizontal control and expansionjoints.

Corner jointsExternal and internal corners have thejointing and coating continuous aroundthe corner or are reinforced with aperforated corner angle (refer Fig. 33).Expressed external and internal cornerscan be used. Details are similar to thoseshown in Figs 23 and 24.

For external corners refer to Figs 32and 33.

At internal corners adhere a strip ofInseal 3259 in position before fixingsheets. (Refer Fig. 34.) The sheets canthen be finished with the standardtape-reinforced flexible jointingsystem. (Refer Figs 31 and 34.)

Corner details can also be expressed orsealant filled similar to the detailsshown in Figs 23 and 24. Refer to thenotes in Figs 23 and 24.

Notes:1. The recessed edge of the Harditex™ sheet is designed to accommodate a tape-reinforced

flexible jointing system, to achieve a flush finish with textured coatings. Refer also to theselected coating contractor for joint details.

2. When the sheet recessed edge is cut away, site grinding of the edge to form a recessed jointis required before the sheet is fixed. (Refer Fig. 7.)

Recessed sheet joint methodThe following external corner details must have recessed edges and can be finished by thefollowing methods.• The external corner can be jointed with flushing and finishing compounds and reinforcing tape

continuous around the corner as described in Fig. 31.• The external corner can be tied together with an exterior-quality PVC angle fitted over the

recessed edges of the Harditex™. Nail-fix to frame. Nail both legs of the angle with 40mmHardiflex® nails at 255mm centres. The corner must then be finished with flushing and beddingcompound over the angle. Refer Fig. 33 for finishing detail. The PVC angle is available fromstockists of James Hardie products.

This specification is used to install anddetermine the bracing ratings ofHarditex 7.5mm and 9mm externalwall bracing and claddings. Bracingratings have all been determined byBRANZ testing and are suitable foruse in conjunction with NZS 3604Code of Practice for Light TimberFrame Construction Not RequiringSpecific Design.

FramingThe Harditex bracing systems in thisbrochure apply only to timber frameconstruction, and are not to be usedfor steel frame construction.

The timber framing must be inaccordance with NZS 3604 Code ofPractice for Light Timber FrameBuildings.

The studs must be spaced at 600mmmaximum centres, between continuoustop and bottom plates with nogs at1200mm maximum centres.

FixingHarditex bracing sheets must be fixedvertically with all sheet edges onframing. Sheet joints must be avoidedat the corners of openings (except forexpansion and control joints). Refer topages 15-17 for full details of controland expansion joints.

When bracing panels contain controland expansion joints the panels mustbe separated, for design purposes, intoseparate units each side of the joints.

To achieve the bracing ratings shownin Table 4, full-height sheets withoutjoints must be used for walls up to3000mm in height.When bracingwalls exceed 3000mm in height, onesheet joint is permissible up to amaximum bracing element height of4800mm. Jointing sheets in thehorizontal direction is permissible tomake up the element length. Jointingmust be kept to the minimum, forexample an 1800mm element length

must be a 1200mm- and 600mm-widesheet or two 900mm-wide sheets.

Always ensure the sheet join is on thecentre line of the stud or nog toachieve the fixing as detailed.

There is no limit to the length ofbracing elements.

When end fixing straps are used, thestrap and the holding-downbolt/coach screw must be used at theend of each element length.When justHD bolts/coach screws are used theyare required at the end of eachelement length.

When group nailing is used it must beat the end of each bracing sheet.WhenHD bolts or coach screws are requiredwith group nailing, they must be atthe end of each sheet as shown in therelevant figure.

stainless-steel Hardiflex nails. Nail at150mm centres (or as specified in thediagrams) to sheet edges and tointermediate framing and nogs.

Nails must be driven a minimum of12mm from the sheet edge and 50mmfrom corners.The sheets must be heldhard against the framing during nailingto minimise nail break-out.

Drive all nails flush with theHarditex sheet surface. Do not punchas this can weaken the nails’ holding.

Fix all Harditex sheets from thecentre working towards the outside toavoid drumminess.

Certain bracing applications requirethe use of end strap fixing.The endstraps must be rebated into the framingbehind the sheets. (Refer Table 4 andFigs 42, 46, 47 and 48.)

BracingHarditex will provide bracing forbuildings designed and constructed inaccordance with NZS 3604 (NZS3604 is cited in Approved DocumentBI/AS1 Clause 4.0.)

For verification of this aspect of theproduct refer to BRANZ AppraisalCertificate No. 229, 1995 (JamesHardie Wall Bracing Systems).

Harditex when used as the requiredbracing must also be used with theappropriate fixings as set out in Table4. Refer also to Figs 35 to 56 forHarditex sheet bracing details.

Sheets stopped below top plateWhere bracing sheets are stoppedbelow the level of the top plate referto Fig. 49 for details.

Bracing panel heightBracing panel height is normally

2400mm and all bracing ratings givenin Table 4 are for this panel height.

When other heights are required referto Clause K.7 NZS 3604.Themaximum height for all these bracingpanels is 4800mm.

General notes for all bracingfigures1. Where boundary joists are required

they must be continuous membersnailed to the ends of joists and mustnot be nogged between.

2. For the Harditex or Harditex /Gib® Braceline ratings for all figuresrefer to Table 4.

8. Window Panel Combination notes:• The maximum allowable window size

is 1600mm wide x 1500mm deep.Any window this size or smaller canbe used for the bracing calculation.

• The minimum wall panel length toeach side of a window opening mustbe 800mm. This can be either of thefollowing: An in-plane wall 800mm long.An in-plane wall and a return wall togive 800mm combined length.

• The minimum length of the in-planewall or the return wall is to be each400mm.

• The total wall length including thewindow opening and the return wall isused for the bracing calculation.

• The only exception to this is theexample in Fig. 56 where the middlewindow must be ignored as each win-dow opening must have 800mm eachside.

Section 6: New Zealand Building Code compliance

New Zealand Building Code(NZBC)Harditex must be used in accordancewith this specification. It will thenmeet the relevant provisions of NZBCClauses:B1 StructureB2 DurabilityE2 External MoistureF2 Hazardous Building Materials

(Harditex is non-hazardous interms of Clause F2).

It will also contribute towards theprovisions of H1 Energy Efficiencywhen the details in this specificationare used. (Refer Fig. 57.)

DurabilityThe Harditex sheet system meets theperformance requirements of NZBCClause B2.3.1(a) of 50 years as long asthe integrity of the various coatingsystems is maintained.This isparticularly relevant to theperformance of the fixing and jointingsystems and when used as the bracingsystem.

Harditex sheets must be jointed andcoated within 3 months of erection.

In very severe coastal conditions inNew Zealand hot-dipped galvanisednails and screws have a durability of 10years.Therefore in these locationsalternatives such as stainless-steelfixings must be used.

Very severe coastal conditions aredefined as:

• Areas within 500 metres of surfbeaches

• Areas within 200 metres of non-surfbeaches.

NOTES:1. 500 metres is a guide distance only. In

some coastal areas salt spray may driftinland much further than 500 metres,therefore local corrosion hazards and

prevailing on-shore winds must be takeninto consideration.

2. Areas of high thermal activity must alsobe regarded as very severe conditions.

To meet the 50-year bracing durabilityrequirements, stainless-steel nails mustbe used for all bracing sheets. 40mmand 50mm x 2.8mm 316 gradestainless-steel nails area available fromstockists of James Hardie products.

Serviceable lifeHarditex is not susceptible to long-term moisture damage and when thejointing, sealing, flashing and coatingdetails are maintained the Harditex isexpected to have a serviceable life of atleast 50 years.

Bracing systemsHarditex 7.5mm and 9mm sheets aresuitable sheet materials for wall bracingin terms of NZS 3604. For full details

of the Harditex bracing systems referto pages 19-33.

MaintenanceRegular maintenance of the variousjointing and coating systems is essentialto ensure water ingress is preventedover the life of the building. Inparticular the following will needcareful attention to maintain awaterproof state:

• PVC flashings and jointers

• Inseal and Butynol strips

• Sealants, coatings and any cracks atjoints.

Regular maintenance is required tomeet the stated durability in the NewZealand Building Code. Maintenancealso has an effect on systemperformance, therefore it must beshown that regular maintenance hasbeen carried out for productwarranties to be upheld.

Maintenance definition• A regular check every 12 months to

confirm there is no deterioration ofany component

• Washdown of the painted surfacesevery 12 months

• Recoating of painted surfaces every7 to 12 years

The time cycle will depend on thepaint system used. Check with thepaint manufacturer for the lifeexpectancy of the system.

Energy efficiencyA timber-framed wall clad with7.5mm or 9mm insulated Harditex

(refer Fig. 57) will exceed the1.5ºCm2/W requirement of thermalresistance as cited by AcceptableSolution E3/AS1 and therefore therequirements of NZBC Clause E3should be met in housing if adequateinsulation is provided.

Fire-resistance ratings (loadbearing)Refer to Table 5.

A load-bearing 30/30/30 fire-resistance rating is available (referBRANZ test report 2454).This systemcomprises 7.5 or 9mm Harditex on100 x 50 frame with R1.8 fibreglassbatts and 12.5mm Gib® Fyreline.Contact the James Hardie Helpline on0800 808 868 for further details.

Fire-resistance ratings can be achievedby fixing Harditex sheets to thefollowing specifications:

• Fix Winstone’s Gib® Fyreline instrict accordance with thespecification number shown in theGib® Fire Rated Systems, July1997.

• Batten over the outside layer ofGib® Fyreline at the same framingcentres as for the fire-ratedspecification. Refer also to page 9 ofthis brochure for the batteningspecifications. Refer also toWinstone Wallboards LtdInformation Bulletin No. 13March 1994.

• Place heavy-duty breather-typebuilding paper complying withparagraph E2/AS1 2.5.3 of theNew Zealand Building Code overthe battens.

• Fix the Harditex in accordancewith the instructions in thisbrochure.

A number of reputable exteriorfinishing systems have been developedfor use with Harditex claddingsheets.These are ideal for residentialand light commercial projects.

This brochure describes three basiccomponents:

Harditex sheetsFor description refer to page 4.

Architectural shapesThree-dimensional shapes of expandedpolystyrene (EPS) can be fixed directlyonto Harditex base sheets quicklyand easily, giving greater designflexibility.These polystyrene shapesproduce a wide range of architecturaltrim details for windows, arches,cornices and columns. Instead of constructing costly shapes ofwood or wire lath, aesthetic detail canbe achieved very economically.Sculptured architectural shapes can beaccurately cut to a range of designsand thicknesses.

The shaped polystyrene is adhered tothe Harditex , covered with fibreglassmesh, plastered and primed, ready forcoating.

For methods of adhering and finishingthe polystyrene shape apply to thechosen jointing and coatingmanufacturer.

Jointing and coating systemsThe minimum film dry thickness willvary with the type of texture andfinish chosen. (Refer to the chosencoating applicator for details.)

The systems suitable for use withHarditex are 100% acrylic or pureelastomeric high-build texture coatingsor flexibly modified plasters.These aregenerally fade resistant, water resistantand together with the tape-reinforcedjoints are flexible enough toaccommodate thermal expansion andcontraction.The finishing systems offera variety of colours and textures; fromearthy terracotta shades, through tofresh light pastels. Smooth finishesmust be avoided.The medium toheavy textures chosen may varybetween manufacturers.

The joint and coating systems usedmust be from the same manufacturerto ensure compatibility and systemwarranties.

System essentialsWhen horizontal recessed-edge jointsare installed the timber framing andfloor joists must be thoroughly drybefore jointing and coating isundertaken. Failure to comply withthis will result in downward shrinkageof the framing and joists which can

result in horizontal sheet jointpouting.

Do not use dark colours as they cancause excessive heat build-up on east,west and north-facing walls. Coloursmust have a light-reflective value(LRV) of 40% minimum regardless ofgloss level, i.e. colours tinted fromUltra Deep,Accent and some Mid andDeep tones are not suitable.

Control and expansion joints must bedesigned and built into the system.

Decking bearersWhen timber bearers are fixed directlyover the Harditex cladding, theHarditex sheet must be fullyprotected by a paint coating beforefixing the bearer.

FencingWhen Harditex is used inapplications such as fences or screens itis essential that the timber framing andthe back of the sheet are sealed fromthe weather.Therefore, for fenceapplications it is essential that sheetsare applied to the Harditex

specification on both sides of theframing to completely seal the backface of the sheets.The bottom of thesheets must also be kept 20mm clearof concrete foundations or mowingstrips.
