At NHK Broadcasting theme park, you can test your skills as an ani-mation and drama voice actor and enjoy the feeling of being an announc-er. Two high vision cameras project images of visitors onto a 150-inchbig screen. In the hall there is an experience studio, a period drama stu-dio, etc. where you will more closely experience the world of TV. Youcan also observe the filming of scenes from popular TV programs suchas long-running dramas or TV novel series through the viewing window.Being photographed with TV characters is very popular among children.

The sight of 75 different species and 1,500 cherry blossoms fill the garden. One ofthe features of Shinjuku Gyoen is that you can enjoy various kinds of cherry blossoms over a long period. They start with kanzakura (winter cherry blossoms) inthe middle of February, a single-petal flower in late March, and the buds of eight-petaled flowers in April. Over 300,000 people visit this park during the spring duringthe cherry blossom season. The beauty of the Japanese garden is well-known. You canalso see the skyscrapers of west Shinjuku from the park.

The All Japan Cheerleading and Dance Championship is scheduled to be held in2006. The USA Nationals is the general term for the “US Cheer Song & DrillContest.” In the United States, preliminary contests are held in each region of theUSA from October every year and about 500 teams and 7,000 ‘spirit’ leaders go tothe final selection held the following March in Anaheim, California. This is a bigevent. “USA-Japan” is the equivalent Japanese Contest held in March. The quarterfinals will be held on the 24th, semi finals on the 25th, and the final on the 26th atMakuhari Messe event hall. Admission fee is ¥2,600. For inquiries, contact theUnited Spirit Association Japan.

They’re handmade in Japan. Hand painted yuzen tee-shirts are very popular as are pen-cases made from Japanesetabi socks. Hunting caps handmade from Oshima-tsumugikimono material are also very popular items.”

What have been some of the biggest hurdles Shinya hasexperienced while running shokuninn.com? “Finding cus-tomers initially, although thankfully more new customersand continued repeat customers means Shokuninn.com isexpanding nicely,” he says. “The next great hurdle is build-ing up a solid overseas customer base. The high point of running the business occurred inChristmas 2005 when all the craftspeople came together as agroup for the first time for the ‘bonenkai’ and they realizedwhat they were doing has great value. “All the craftspeopleare making a living from their traditional skills, even theyoung newcomers,” Shinya says. “The low point was definite-ly April 2005 as we had a 90% drop in business that month.The main artisan on our books at that time went out of busi-ness and it affected our company badly. Japanese speak the same language and share the same cul-ture. The key to understanding Japanese people is that it isimportant to realize that Japanese are a mono-cultural, agri-cultural-based race living on islands that enjoy a mild climate.In other words, they have been raised purely in the land ofJapan, where very little mixing has taken place. As a result, auniform race has been created.

Using the term “Clone-like race” may make it easier tounderstand the Japanese. This clone-like race, which express-es their particular characteristics in exaggeration, has the sameshape, skin color, character, and share the same values. Inaddition, they have topics in common. Because Japanesebelong to the same race, they can understand what otherJapanese are thinking and they can enjoy a “feel at home”atmosphere with other Japanese.

To the Japanese, who have the same genes, foreigners areusually perceived to be people from a different world.Japanese do not generally distinguish foreigners individually,such as American or French, but distinguish them all as atotally different race, or ‘aliens.’ In Japan, foreigners areviewed as different people in many respects.

Foreigners may feel that they are being discriminatedagainst, but this perception among Japanese is merely theresult of an innocent distinction between races. To realize thisJapanese aspect of awareness is the first step to understandingthe Japanese.

The new school term in Japan starts in April. Due to thedecrease in the number of children and population in general,the number of school students has been decreasing. Accordingto the 2005 school basic survey carried out by the Ministry ofEducation, Culture, Sports, & Technology, the number of pri-mary school students has been decreasing for 24 years since1982. The number of Junior high school students has beendecreasing for 19 years since 1987. The total number of Seniorhigh school students also dropped compared to last year.

lege students are included). These figures are the highest everand the increase in the number of female students is outstand-ing. The ratio of students who go on to vocational schools is19.0 percent. Only 17.4 percent of high school students workafter graduation.

There are now more and more university departments fail-ing to fill their student quotas that once used to be very com-petitive. If you don’t specify a university, almost every stu-dent can enroll. Nowadays, universities are becoming morelike places where students can discover their vocations, findfriends and enjoy their youth, rather than places for studying.

Japan’s ratio of students who go on to highereducation is not high when viewed globally

What about the higher education situation globally?According to the 2003 survey of university entry carried outby the OECD (which contains 30 member countries at pre-sent) announced in September 2005, the ratio in advancedcountries is generally high. Japan is ranked 16th. Japanesemen are ranked above the OECD average, but women wereranked below. For your information, the highest ranked coun-try is Iceland with 80 percent, followed by New Zealand andSweden.

Decreasing numbers of children and increasing numbersparticipating in higher education are trends being observed inadvanced countries, not only Japan. On the other hand, popu-lations of poor countries are increasing. According to the“Human Development Report 2005” produced by the UnitedNations Development Program, 115 million children are notattending school. The main reason behind this is poverty. 2.5billion people are living on less than 2 dollars a day.

The current world population of over 6 billion is forecast togrow to 9 billion by 2050. The opportunities for children inpoor countries to get an education will continue to be low.The difference in education between advanced countries andpoor countries will make rich people richer and poor peoplepoorer.

necessary for commuting to companies and schools. The bigtransportation terminals in Tokyo are Shinjuku, Shibuya,Ikebukuro, Ueno, and Tokyo stations. It is reported that thenumber of passengers who get on and off at Shinjuku Stationalone is over 3.2 million a day.

Tokyo is a complex combination of different towns, each ofwhich has its own characteristics. Marunocuhi and Otemachi,located on the west side of Tokyo Station are long establishedoffice centers. Kabutocho, next to the above centers, isJapan’s Wall Street. After a large number of skyscrapers,including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, werebuilt in the early 90’s, the west side of Shinjuku was spotlight-ed as a new business center.

Tokyo towns are rich in varietyAfter “Roppongi Hills,” a huge skyscraper complex, was

built in 2003 in the night entertainment district of Roppongi, ithas been changing into a business center. Successful venturecompanies such as those in the IT industry have moved intothe Roppongi Hills complex, which has now become a symbolof success. Recently, the bay area have been developed as anew business center. Kasumigaseki is an area where manygovernment offices are located.

Ginza, Aoyama and Harajuku are famous shopping andfashion areas where many high class stores jostle for attention.In February 2006, the new landmark “Omotesando Hills”complex opened in Harajuku. Shibuya and Harajuku are hothangouts for the younger generation. Shibuya is also knownas an IT town. Shinjuku, which has almost everything, includ-ing business, shopping and entertainment suitable for peopleof all ages, is a popular town.

With regards to sightseeing, Asakusa comes top of the list dueto its many temples and shrines, which with the nearby Ueno,provide a true Japanese cultural atmosphere. Recently, Odaiba, acoastal town facing Tokyo Bay, has become a new sightseeingspot and is especially popular among couples. Roppongi is stillpopular as a night spot for foreigners. Japanese in this modern age still have these aesthetic val-ues, which were built up in part, using tea ceremony by SENno Rikyu (1522~1591). Rikyu was born to a rich merchantfamily in Sakai, Osaka. His familiarity and talents with teawere recognized in his childhood. Later Rikyu served the rulerODA Nobunaga. After Nobunaga’s death he served TOY-OTOMI Hideyoshi, who was a subordinate of Nobunaga andwho unified the entire nation for the first time.

Tea ceremony parties at that time played the role of mod-ern-day salons. Prominent figures gathered and strengthenedtheir friendships. At these parties, peoples’ attention was cen-tered on the tea ceremony utensils, in particular the tea cups.These would be substituted by gems today. They competed toshow them off to each other. The tea room played a similarrole. Hideyoshi, who climbed from being a poor farmer to thehighest position in the nation, built a tea room made of gold toshow off his power.

Mental conflicts between two geniuses

Rikyu became Hideyoshi’s trusted adviser. One day,Hideyoshi heard that the Morning Glory’s at Rikyu’s resi-dence were beautiful. He wanted to view them and askedRikyu whether he could visit. When Hideyoshi arrived atRikyu’s residence, there were no Morning Glory’s at all.Rikyu took the puzzled Hideyoshi to his tea room. There,Hideyoshi saw just one Morning Glory. Rikyu had cut all theother Morning Glory’s down to highlight the most beautifulflower. It was sitting in a non-decorated space, looking veryvivid and impressive. Hideyoshi praised him saying “You area great master, Rikyu.”

Rikyu reduced the size of his tea room to the minimum of 2tatami mats and made it simple. Keeping the walls free of dec-orations he used cheap Japanese tea utensils. The reputation ofRikyu, who was mindful of Zen philosophy and the beauty ofsimplicity, had grown.

One day, all of a sudden, Hideyoshi ordered Rikyu to com-mit hara-kiri. The reasons behind this order are still a mysteryeven now. Although there are many views, the weightiest ofwhich is that Hideyoshi became jealous of Rikyu, who wasmore respected than Hideyoshi who held ultimate power. Wasthe mind of Hideyoshi, who praised the Morning Glory,inflamed with jealousy? It must be true that these two top fig-ures, who stood out in politics and culture, were conflictedbetween friendship and hate. Rikyu followed Hideyoshi’sorder without any protest, to highlight Hideyoshi’s tyranny.Rikyu was 71 at the time.

“2 tatami” is generally called “1 tsubo,” or 3.3124 square meters, and is used to measure house space.This is a very important measuring unit in Japan when expressing house space.

Japanese is generally perceived to be a difficult language tolearn. “In fact, it is the easiest language in the world,” KISHI-MOTO Tatsuo, professor of Ritsumeikan University men-tioned in his book “Secrets of Nihongo” (HIRA-TAIBOOKS). However, it does not mean it is all easy. One of thepeculiarites of the Japanese language is that the characters arethe same as the phonetic symbols.

In brief, you can speak and write by just memorizing the 46different pronunciations of Japanese characters. The character“a” in English is pronounced in several ways, such as “a,”“ei,” “e,” but in Japanese, “a” is only pronounced as “a.” Aslong as it is written in hiragana (a simple form of readingcharacters), you can immediately read correctly and you canwrite what you speak correctly.

Japanese consists of 46 different sounds, but accuratelyspeaking, an additional 58 sounds, that are slight variations ofthe basic 46, developed naturally to help make pronunciationeasier. As these 58 sounds have similar sounds to the basic 46,you do not have to make much of an effort to learn them. Ifonly hiragana is used, Japanese would be the world’s easiestlanguage. The reason people feel Japanese is difficult is thatJapanese has three different forms of writing — hiragana,katakana and kanji.

In Japanese, there are many words that have the samesounds but different meanings. For instance, “Kisho.” Thisword has various meanings including “getting up,” “whether”and “temperament.” You can understand the correct meaningby looking at the context of the sentence, even if it is writtenin hiragana. However, sometimes it invites misunderstandings.If you think that basic Japanese is hiragana, and katakana andkanji are used to make the meanings of hiragana charactersclearer, then Japanese is easy.

“The best part of this group is the ability to help one anoth-er via the mailing list,” Chiharu explains. “Some memberspost technical questions, sometimes very basic questions, andothers answer them. Basically, we are an online community,so face-to-face events are secondary. But in the Kanto region,we try to organize as many events as we can.”

What took Tomomi to the USA? “I was thinking that Iwould go to a foreign country someday ever since I was lit-tle,” she says. “I was looking for freedom. Living in Japan atthe time was such torture for me. Due to increasing concern about the environment, amovement to stop customers from using disposalplastic bags handed out by supermarkets and other

stores has been rapidly expanding recently and more peoplenow carry their own bags. Against this backdrop, furoshiki(wrapping cloth) is now attracting attention. Furoshiki is sim-ply a sheet of cloth, but it can wrap anything regardless ofshape, and it is reusable.

Gift wrapping amazes foreign people It is MORITA Chizuko, Kyoto resident who is focusing on

presenting furoshiki in new ways. “I wanted to do somethinguseful for society since 20 years ago,” says Chizuko. “Iencountered furoshiki, whose usage was gradually fadingfrom modern life and I felt a sense of crisis that it might dis-appear before too much longer. Furoshiki used to be a symbolof Japan’s living culture. I wanted to revive it in the present

day.” With that in mind she organized the Furoshiki StudyGroup in 1992.

Chizuko looked into the possibil-ities for furoshiki; whether applesor chocolates can be beautifullywrapped, whether it can be used as abag, or whether it would be suitable

for interior decoration. “I am awkward, so in the earlystage I learnt from a manufacturer about how to wrapwith furoshiki,” Chgizuko says. “I have never thoughtI would receive lecture requests from citizen groups orthat many of my books would be published.”

For the first 5 or 6 years, her activities were not acknowl-edged, but they were realized in an unexpected way. “We start-ed to receive many requests, including international exchangegroups that requested lectures as their foreign guests visitthem, and members whose daughters were planning to studyabroad or whose husbands were taking a business trip over-seas.” Since furoshiki is only a sheet of cloth, it is easy to learnhow to wrap things with it and convenient to take it with you.

Rush of lecture requests from localgovernments

On the domestic scene, she received manylecture requests from local governments. Itwas not only its ecological value that drewattention to furoshiki wrapping, but the bene-fits gained from using one’s hands. After some time, furoshikiwrapping came to be used at lifetime study centers andseniors’ classes, by handicapped people and consumers. Eventhose who have eye problems joined as they could experiencethe texture of the cloth with their hands.

At the start, there were only 20 group members, but thatnumber has since grown to 430 and spread all over the coun-try. Of this number, 90 percent are female. Members’ agesrange from 20s to 70s, but the majority are in their 40s and50s. The society is a non-profit organization which has beenregistered by the Ministry of the Environment and while herprofession is a copywriter, her time has been taken up by thegroup’s activities. Using furoshiki meets the concepts of the 3R campaign(Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) that Prime Minister Koizumiadvocates. Her activities caught the eyes of Minster of theEnvironment KOIKE Yuriko and she appeared on a talk showwith the Minister in an event held at Mitsukoshi departmentstore’s flagship shop in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, this January. Sheappears in many lectures and events, but she does not boastabout her success.

The history of furoshiki goes back to the Naraperiod (710~784AD). Many people thinkfuroshiki is unique to Japanese culture, however it has in factbeen used in many countries. It is mostly used as an instru-ment to carry baggage and children. In Japan, while it is basi-cally used for carrying and storing things, it has developed ina unique way in the field of gift giving. From the Edo period,people became very particular about cloth materials anddesigns and some people even included their family crest andname on furishiki. The cloth developed more like a culture. Inthis regard, it can be counted as an aspect of Japanese culture.

At present, few stores sell furoshiki. “There are only 5 ~ 6manufacturers in Tokyo and a little more than 10 in Kyoto,”says Chizuko. “ ‘Sales are limited to department stores andsouvenir shops.” Prices varies from 500 yen to 30,000 yen.Furoshiki costing between 1,000 yen and 1,500 yen are usedmost commonly. As material, silk is the best. Cotton and syn-thetic fibers are often utilized, but cotton is the easiest to use.
