It is with great pleasure I congratulate Health Tutors’ College – Mulago for the achievement of 50 years of existence. The College is the only College for Health workers seeking to develop and equip themselves with professional knowledge and skills for teaching and research in health related disciplines.

I am proud to associate myself with the college for a long time. First as the administrator responsible for Mulago Hospital and complex, secondly as the first ever Chairperson of the Governing Council briefly before I left for further studies in USA. Thirdly as the member of the 4th and 5th Governing Council where I served as the Chairperson Finance Committee and currently as the Chairperson of the 6th Governing Council.

As a council, our work is to plan, provide policy guidelines and direction and give advice and support to the College Administration for effective smooth running of the college. The council conducts its committee meetings quarterly. We base our strength and aspiration on the appointing authority, the Hon Minister of Education and Sports, work closely with the Ministry Staff and College management led by the Principal. We follow closely the Universities and Tertiary institutions guidelines.

Thanks go to Ministry of Education and Sports , past Principals and, Governing Councils, Alumni, development partners, management and staff of the College. The products of the College boast of excellent hands on qualifications. This explains why they are easily absorbed into the market as soon as they graduate. The future of the College is bright as is evidenced in its development plans.

Dear Reader, I am delighted to celebrate with you fifty years of Health Tutors’ College Mulago existence. As we celebrate 50 years of existence, Health Tutors’ College Mulago strives to maintain the quality of health tutors through performing its core functions of teaching and learning, research and community service. In the area of teaching, Health Tutors’ College Mulago gives the students a memorable experience through Competence Based Training and Active Teaching and Learning in the new Pedagogic Block with its spacious classrooms, well equipped skills laboratories, well stocked library with both text books and electronic resources, a computer laboratory with internet and Wi-Fi on the campus. The college has a number of qualified fulltime academic staff backed by part-timers from Makerere University, College of Education and External studies and College of Health Sciences together with staff from other Health Training Institutions around Mulago Hill.

In order to equip the learners with the knowledge, skills and attitudes holistically, they are placed in Mulago National Referral Hospital and various practicum centers for the clinical placements. The tutor students get an opportunity to share experience with academicians, scholars and educationists from the Ugandan Ministry of Education and Sports, Ministry of Health, Makerere University, various Examinations Boards and Professional Councils and other stakeholders. The students conduct mandatory research through developing and defending their proposals and research reports under the guidance of the College staff and the College Research Committee. The students carry out community service through interactions with the various

communities during medical camps, blood donation drives, community cleaning and various health education talks to the communities.

The college provides its students various welfare and learning support facilities. The students have an opportunity to enjoy sports using the Mulago Hospital Fields through their annual sports activities and cultural gala. They compete at the national level in Teacher/Tutor, Instructor Education and Training Institutions’ National Sports Competitions. There are several prayer groups and religious Organisations on campus for spiritual nourishment of the learners. The College has a Memorandum of understanding with a Hostel on Mulago Hill to provide secure accommodation to the tutor students. Transport is also providedby the college to learning/training sites

Health Tutors’ College Mulago continues to expand as it trains competent Health Tutors who will train other health workers and contribute towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals with the thinking in mind that there is no education system that is better than the quality of its teachers in this case health tutors. Looking forward to your continuous support in making Health Tutors’ College Mulago a Centre of excellence in competence based health tutorship education responsive to national, regional and international labour market needs.

I am very honored and highly privileged to write about the Health Tutors College (HTC) Mulago on the occasion of 50 years’ anniversary. I am very proud to be associated with the HTC and I thank God for the opportunity.

Mulago National Referral Hospital (MNRH) has been working very closely with the HTC since it was established in 1967. The Hospital provid-

ed land for construction and the original tutors. Indeed, the teaching staff were previously staff of MNRH. Notable among them are the former Director of the College, Mrs Margaret Kabanga and the former Deputy Principal, Mrs Margaret Wandabwa.

I have also personally participated in the development of the college. I have been an active member of the Governing

What started as a Midwifery Tutors College in 1967 through the years became a Nurse Tutors College, included Allied Health Professionals and

became Health Tutors’ College with a steady growing population, an increase in demand for better Health care, new advances in medical care and being the only Health Tutors’ College in the country, there is no doubt we are destined for greatness.

The quality of mid-level Health Professionals lies in our hands. As we celebrate this great milestone of 50 years, we have a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the history of the College and important contributions it has made to the personal and academic development of students. We have every reason to be proud of the past and excited about the future destined for Excellency. We shall continue preparing Tutors that will successfully tutor, instruct and mentor learners in Health fields to deliver quality Health care.

As we strive to provide quality Health Tutor education through skills training and research, we offer the following programs;• Bachelors of medical Education 3 Years Full time study• Higher Diploma in Clinical Instruction 9 Months, Distance Mode

Council for the past four years and take pride in the many developments which have taken place at the College. Nota-bly the acquisition of the new Pedagogic block which also houses the library. I was a member of the National Belgium Technical Cooperation Steering committee which negotiated and commissioned the construction of the new block and ne-gotiated the acquisition of the new college van. I have also personally participated in the development of the college cur-ricular including the one for nutrition and the formulation of the Strategic Plan.

I most cordially and heartfully congratulate the HTC on the 50th anniversary and I look forward to moving to greater heights. Long live the Governing Council, the Principal, the Deputy and the staff of the college.

May God be with you always.

Congratulations to the 6th Governing Council, Teaching, Non-teaching, Support staff and Students of Health Tutors College Mulago on reaching a great milestone, 50th Anniversary of service at Health Tutors’ college.

I thank almighty God who has kept us alive to witness, share and take part in this great milestone at Health Tutors’ College, since 2013 when I join the HTC family;we take pride in the things we do and we are definitely proud of what we have achieved in 50 yearsof existence.

Health Tutors’ College is the only health tutor Training institution in Uganda and is affiliated to Makerere University through the College of Education and External Studies, a competence based training institution. The introduction of ATL (Active teaching and learning) A technique of teaching and learning, according to Bonwell C and Eison J (1991)” states that in active learning, students participate in the process and students participate when they are doing something

Like the saying theory deficient of practical is blind, training at Health Tutors’ College (HTC) is not without. The triad of Skills’ Laboratories at HTC provides the opportunity for the tutor student to learn and safely practice clinical skills in a controlled environment, in preparation for the pedagogical skill building related to dispensation of quality care to the client / patient.

These Laboratories are wittingly designed to replicate healthcare settings or living environments and facilitate the educative teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate tutor students to develop their clinical teaching skills.

They simulate a hospital unit, well equipped and contain 21st century teaching and learning

resources including modernized equipment, variety of life size mannequins ,anatomical models, disposable and non-disposable supplies ubiquitous in client care.

The fabulous use of Skills laboratories at HTC ameliorates the skills of tutor trainees and ultimately makes them capable of out manoeuvering both pedagogical and non pedagogical predicaments there out.

Remember , Knowledge is power.

Mr. Nshabire IvanDept. Of Skills Laboratory.

besides passively listening, students are engaged in two aspects that is doing things and thinking about the things they are doing” enhance critical thinking.

With the Integration of ICT with teaching and learning;we encourageour Tutor Students to use ICTteaching materials like projectors, presentations and video recordings of classroom sessions.

The ICT Department would like take this opportunity to thank The Principal Health Tutors College Mulago for the continued support given to us. It is with the collective dedication and hard-work, trust of your entire staff that helped the institution reach the place where the college is today.

Congratulations from all of us for your wonderful journey of 50 years of success and we hope the same for the future also. We hope the institution reaches to new heights in the coming days.Best wishes

How I Joined Health Tutors’ College MulagoFirst of all reaching at Health Tutors’ College was not on my own. After finishing my O’level which I did in 1976, there was no more chance for me to continue further with my studies. My mother came for a visit and found out that being at home will not open doors for me. She suggested that I need to do something instead.

In 1979, I came to visit her here in Kampala and the next day she brought me to Health Tutors’ College where she had a relative called Princess Dora Kago (now deceased). She was working as a Warden by that time and was staying with relatives who later on went away for further studies. I stayed with Princess Dora Kago while helping her as she was old by that time. After some time she introduced me to Ms Kibuuka Sarah who was working as a Deputy Director by that time. We met her in her office where Deputy Principal sits now. She also introduced me to Mr. Okalebo James who was the Director by that time and they discussed about getting me a Job.

After one week or two, they told me to work as a messenger while they process to work on putting me on the pay roll. I remember I never got salary but later on I started to earn my little salary started with 20,000 Uganda shillings. I remember, we used to get it by cash from Mulago Hospital Accounts Section. There was a Cashier who used to come later on he was posted to the college but his office was in Mulago Hospital.

Later on, I do not remember the year, Mr. Okalebo requested me to work in the Library as by that time there was no librarian. I took time to look after that library by cleaning, dusting and issuing books

to students while giving help in other activities like preparing for meetings.

While working in the library, AMREF came to visit the college in 1988 and planned to send those working in the libraries from health training institutes for a workshop in Mbale. I was among them and I also got a certificate in 15th August 1988.

There was a secretary who was called Margaret Nassonko who was later on transferred to Orthopaedic Department and there came in a lady called Lydia now in Makerere University. That lady got a chance to go back for studies and she requested me to give her help while she was away. This lady, disappeared for good and there I came to be Copy Typist. I was working both as a Copy Typist, an Office Messenger and as Library Assistant. Good enough, before, I took a secretarial study in the school where I was (Nkoni Secondary School) but never finished the course. So, I came having a little knowledge in typing and by that time we were using typewriters!

At the time I was working as a Copy Typist, Ministry of Health was in-charge of all health training institutions. In 1994, I was appointed as a Junior Copy Typist and salary still was little 20,265/= In 1996, it was increased to 44,376/=! I was feeling great by that time.

Time came when Mr. Okalebo James left and Ms Sarah Kibuka became the Director. She also worked for a long time and also left for Tanzania where she was working as President for East African Nurses Association.

I also worked with Ms. Lukandwa Rhona when Ms Kibuka left. During Ms Lukandwa Rhona’s time I was appreciated and given a present under Mulago Hospital as an exemplary employee. After serving the college she also left and became sick and later died!

Then Mrs. Wafula Elizabeth was posted as a Principal. I stayed with her as a Copy Typist. After the death of Dora Kago, there came another Warden (she was a half cast and forgotten the name). She later also left and Ms Ziribaggwa Harriet came in. She also left. We had also Mrs. Matovu Mary who was from Mulago Catering Department who later was transferred to Mulago School of Nursing. The college got Ms Sebina Jalia who also worked for seven years and also left. The college found it difficult to be there without a Catering Officer. So, Mrs. Wafula Elizabeth requested me to lend a hand in that post. I worked for a long time after Mr. Kasiita who was working as a Cashier in Mulago hospital came to teach me how to work on delivery, issuing and keeping records especially on food items. This was not an easy task because we had to take all the issuing cards to the Ministry of Education for accountabilities when the college was taken by Ministry of Education & Sports.

During Mrs. Wafula’s time I was introduced to computer. In 1996 and 1997 I went for a one month course respectively to learn how to use a computer where I was given a credit at the end of the course. I got another chance to go for Information Communication Technology which was for one week in 2006 at Makerere University Business School. Record and Office Management at East African School of Library and Information Science for one week in 2008. In that same

Tribute to Our Longest Serving Staff I am delighted to take this opportunity to recognize Nakiganda Betty Grace for her long service and dedication to HTCM. It is the hard work, loyalty, commitment of staff like Nakiganda Betty Grace that has enabled us to achieve this milestone. HTCM @ 50 |15year, I was given another chance to go back for Advanced Records and Information Management. I thank Mrs. Wafula Elizabeth for giving me that opportunity to be introduced to such courses.

Later Mrs. Wafula Elizabeth had to go for studies and Mrs. Kabanga Margaret came in as Principal. She kept me but remained in the library as my special duty. Before Mrs. Wafula left, I was feeling overloaded with work then Mrs. Nabukalu Elizabeth came in to assist the college with catering activities.

The College’s growth upto where it is nowHealth Tutors’ College has been growing in my sight. It was a small place but now it is big! At first students were accommodated at the college as we had only fourteen (14 rooms) and others were coming from their centres especially those who were working in Kampala Health Training institutions. According to the records it started with four students, then eight and so on. Later it started its Master Degree Programme where the number increased a lot. It has a Post Gradate and a Higher Diploma in Clinical Instruction programmes. Where the Pedagogical building is now, used to be a garbage burning place. I never new that such a building will be there. I was happy to see this and thanks goes to BTVET and BTC for this. We used to be few workers but now, we are many. Each department is working on its issues without running up and down as I used to do so before.

Before the college had no van but now, we have two vans and three coasters. No trip is difficult when there is field activities and also when we are going for an End of Year Parties. I have enjoyed the one we went to Murchison Fall in Masindi, and another one where we

went to Forest Park in Buloba. Before as were few with Mrs. Wafula we went in one was at the Equatorial Hotel and another one was in one of the Restaurants on Buganda Road.

Vote of thanksI would like to thank all those above for allowing me to work with them and for keeping me since I came to the college. Special thanks to Princess Dora Kago for her good words she used to tell me. Those words are still on my heart. The way I stayed with her she was a good lady to me. I thank Mrs. Matovu Mary (Warden at Paramedical Training Institutions) who was also a friend to me. I thank the current Principal Ms Keren Carol Drateru, as she was a student before, she knows me very well. She is a great to me not only keeping me around but also caring for me.

Now as we celebrate to reach this far, I thank The Almighty God for keeping me up to this date. There were ups and downs in my life but I never got worried to give up. I understand the college is a better place to work with.

AdviceTo my fellow workmate, stay together as a team. Serve diligently and keep the college on its standard.

May the college live longer and be blessed. Higher and higher it goes.

Let this Golden Jubilee Celebration be the renewal of hope and energy in working for growth of Health Tutors College ( HTC) and to define the position of Medical Educators in Uganda and entire World.

50 years of any organization is an important stage that marks a long journey that different

players have covered. A Golden Jubilee is the opportunity any organization gets to:• Remember and honour those departed and still alive for the

vision, aspiration and dedication they had and have for the college.

• Appreciate achievements made during the period covered.• Regrettably note the mistakes made in the process.• Seriously put forward, scrutinize and analyze the programs

and plans for next 50 years and beyond.

We who have been and still proud to be part of HTC must be happy as we celebrate this day. As there is no greater Joy than that of seeing oneself, or an important element of oneself growing to greater horizons year by year. This is the great joy that HTCM is experiencing today she makes 50 years of existence! Congs HTC!

There is no doubt HTC has shaped medical education and Health sectors in Uganda and World over.

Dear Mom am pleased to learn that as years increase for you, you just become young! Now with help of BTC you are having a new face. You have renovated all the buildings, have an active Website, progressed from a diploma awarding institution and now you are awarding degrees and Postgraduate qualifications on addition! Most important of all you are now calling back your old sons and daughters form an Old Students Association.

Allow to inform you that your children have lived and championed your core values of providing medical education with Compassion, Professionalism, Innovativeness, Integrity, Team Work and Time consciousness everywhere they are found.

On this special day as old students we can never forget to thank our lecturers, guardians, benefactors, support staff and people of good will that have supported the existence of HTC- Mulago. We are really proud to have HTC for a mother, for she contributed a lot to what we are now.

Therefore, as we celebrate this Golden Jubilee, let us forge the way forward for the future of HTC and also continue to strengthen the old students Association. This shall create an unbreakable bond between HTC and her sons and daughters.
