Holy Trinity Lutheran Church August 2019 / vol. 26 issue 8
The Calming Presence of Jesus
Many of us remember the Biblical account of Jesus quieting a fierce windstorm on the Sea of Galilee to calm the fears of the disciples who were in the boat with him. We’ve had quite a few fierce thunder storms this summer. Hopefully none of you were in a boat in the middle of a lake during those storms. Even being indoors can be frightening when the rain is pouring down and the thunder and lightning are nearby.
Those outdoor thunderstorms can be frightening. But we can also have storms within. Any storm within does nothing to help us. We need Jesus’ calm. Jesus gives us the word of peace.
I read somewhere, “It’s not stress that kills us; it is our reaction to it.” I have a plaque in my study with these words on it, “God doesn’t give us what we can handle; He helps us handle what we are given.” Someone once said, “Worry is like sitting in a rocking chair. It will give you something to do, but it won’t get you anywhere.”
Go to Jesus when you’re under stress. He can help. He can give peace and calm in the midst of your wor-ries. He can cast out the demons of despair and fear and in their place put peace and calm. With that inner peace you can move forward in greater confidence and trust! Pastor Pentti Maki

God Is in Control “Knowing God has a plan for our lives is very im-portant. Putting our faith in God allows us to trust that the events in our lives are meant to be. It helps us to make choices that must be made and re-alize things are not really out of control – they are under His control. There is a peace that can be found knowing that His plan is playing out in our lives. God is in control. Trust Him. He loves you.” – Rick Norman
QUILT MAKERS—THRIVENT
On June 21st our Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
Comfort Makers Action Team put on the "Live
Generously" T-shirts and used the $250 seed money
provided by Thrivent to help purchase material for
making quilts to provide for the needy in our local
area such as Harmony House and for Lutheran World
Relief. Our team meets once a month to work on
making the quilts. During the year, the team gives
local agencies like Harmony House some of the quilts
and in the fall will deliver quilts to the Lutheran World
Relief truck in Seville, OH. Thank you Thrivent for
your generosity and providing the money to help our
team continue the service of helping those in need.
Anyone who wishes to help make the quilts are
welcome to join the group on the second Wednesday
of each month at 10 a.m.

Manufacturer of the bulbs states that if they were run for 3 hours a day for a whole year, each bulb would only use $1.31 for the year. That means for all 15 bulbs our bill for the year would be $19.65. Asked question of Committee members-- Would our members be able to seal the parking lot by ourselves? Might be a bigger job
than we can take on. Asked for feedback at our next meeting. Several outside jobs are still on the list of things needing done. If any
Congregational members would like to share in the fun of improving our Church, see me.
Actions Taken: Cleaned steps to basement by the parking lot. Continued painting of outside handrails. Filled in for our Sexton on July 8th.

Property Committee Meeting July 2, 2019
Present: Dick Collier, Larry Feichtner, Malachi Johnston, Jim Fleming, Jon Butz, Don Karger, Aaron Koon
Topics Discussed: Work is being done on the exterior areas of the Church Property. We are
painting handrails, trimming the bushes, planting flowers, as well as cleaning up our parking lot.
Pro-Turf has applied the 2nd treatment of the weed and feed to our lawn. The fall application will be in September or October.
We went over how the meeting with our Standard Plumbing and Heating service tech helped us to better understand ways to save on our heating bills.
Steve Flockenzier has been cleaning the carpeted areas of the Church that have not been done in several years. As of this meeting, he has cleaned the Sanctuary, Office, Lounge, Pastor’s office, and the downstairs activity room. We included a few pictures in the monthly newsletter of Steve in action with the carpet cleaning machine. The one thing we were not able to convey to our Congregation was the color of the wastewater that was being removed from the carpet; it was a muddy brown color! With the carpet cleaning ma-chine, we will be able to clean our carpeted areas on a semi-annual, or an annual basis.
The 4 older light fixtures in the hallway outside of Pastor Maki’s office either need to have new LED bulbs installed, or we need to see about replacing the old fixtures with newer ones.
Brenda and I have been working on filling out a Columbia Gas energy effi-ciency rebate savings application that we hope to have in the mail the week of July 8th.
The new LED bulbs that we installed in our Lounge will not only make it brighter in this area, but it has cut down on the heat given off from 15 incan-descent bulbs, as well as an energy savings. We are using 810 less watts of electricity every time we turn on the lights.

Curvin, Carol Bertholf, and Cindy Shasky. Zeddicus Butz also attended the meeting.
Those unable to attend: Stacey Bowman and Rachel Wain. Pastor Maki was teaching
adult Sunday school.

Sunday School room.
Minutes: The minutes of the June 2, 2019 meeting were approved as written.
Old Business:
Committee Activities:
• Rally Day- We continue with the sports rally theme. The group discussed having
a meal on Sept. 8, 2019 Rally Day. Breakfast foods were considered for serving at 10:00 between services. Carol Bertholf proposed having one service at 10:00 a.m. and having a pot luck meal (with a tailgate theme) following the service. This will be taken to Council on Tuesday. "Team Jesus" was identified as our team. Cindy found stickers of sports balls, etc. that say "Team Jesus" on them. We will put these on the doors. Red towels or rags may be used to wave during the welcome back. We will encourage youth to wear their sports clothing on that day. Perhaps everyone could wear their favorite team's sportswear. Nancy will check with the Rehab Center to see if they still do silk screening to have tee shirts designed with the "Team Jesus"
logo.
• Christmas Program- Dec. 2019. No new information at this time.
Summer Youth Activities- The group felt the June youth activity was a success. The July activity will include helping church members (Arnold, Burns, and Frank and others, if needs are identified) with needed projects around their homes. The group will meet at the church at 3:00 pm to discuss "Who Is My Neighbor?" We will talk about the Good Samaritan and what it means to be a good neighbor. Then, small groups will go to the homes and complete the needed work. Then, everyone will return to the church for pizza and drinks and wrap up. The August 11, 2019 2:00 p.m. youth activity will center around "Live Peacefully" where the focus will be on water. We will talk about how blessed we are to have clean water and how many parts of the world do not have clean water. We will discuss Water Missions and how they help parts of the world get access to clean water. The local fire department will talk to the youth and demonstrate what they do. Then, we will have water activities to
finish up the program. We plan to finish at about 4:00 p.m. Continued...
Congregational Outing to Fairport Harbor – August 21
By popular demand the Journeymen will host a return trip to Fairport Harbor, Pastor Maki’s hometown. The invitation for this outing is open to everyone in the congregation. Just show up in the church parking lot on Wednesday, August 21st by 8:30 a.m. From there we will car pool for
the two hour journey. We will tour Pastor Maki’s home congregation, Zion Lutheran Church where the tour guide will give us an explanation of the beautiful stained glass windows. From there we will
go to the Luther Center across the street from the church. We’ll have lunch at Brennen’s Fish House. Perch meals are a favorite but there are other tasty options on the menu. After lunch we’ll tour the Finnish Heritage Museum and the Marine Museum with its lighthouse. You’ll be able to climb the steps to the top of the light-house for a panoramic view of Lake Erie, the Harbor, Grand River and the Village. The after-noon will conclude with closing devotions at the beach before heading home.
Sign-up sheet in the Narthex for lunch reservation. Thank you.
THINGS ARE LOOKING UP FOR OUR ROOF!
HTLC FUND FACT, Even though we are off to a great start, please do not forget to give your donation to the roof fund if you are able.
As of July 18, 2019 $ 8,540 has been raised towards the $20,000 needed for the roof.
THANK YOU!

Background Checks. Nancy signed the CIA (Clear Investigate Advantage) contract and submitted her information for a background check on 7/5/2019. She signed with Agent Acting for Holy Trinity Lutheran Church after her name as recommended by attorney Chuck Robinson. Those who have not had a background check for Holy Trinity before should go either to the Sheriff's Dept. at the former People's Hospital building or to the Mid-Ohio Conference Center on West 4th St. where teachers and others have their background checks done. All who have had a criminal background check in the past, may now complete it on-line at the church office after scheduling a time with Nancy. The cost for Nancy's background check was $14. This does provide a cost savings for Holy Trinity. Always and Cindy are not due to be rechecked till next year. We will look to see if their prior checks are at the church. Background checks done at People's Hospital or at Mid-Ohio Conference Center should have the results sent to Carol Bertholf at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. She and Nancy will review the results and assure the obligations are met to the CIA
contract.
New Business:
Topics for Youth Conference at the NALC Convocation Aug. 5, 2019. Nancy requested topics the group would like to have covered during the conference. She shared some proposed topics from Gary Pecuch who is connected with Faith Webbing. She will e-mail suggestions to him after today's meeting. Always requested information about ways to see that the congregation provides the resources for Faith Webbing, especially after catechism is completed. Catechism provides resources for the 2 years, but then the resources end. She shared experiences she and others had with Faith Webbing. Another subject was the
problem of overcoming science as presented in the schools.
"Believe". Always and Jon shared a packaged program that builds upon "The Story" program that we plan to complete before advent. "Believe", also developed by Randy Frazee, could be implemented in January 2020 and continued for the 30 weeks as it is set up. They found the $300 valued program for $30 at Ollies! Pastor Maki will be asked to review the materials and Council will be informed about the program for
consideration for use at Holy Trinity.
Adjournment: There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:50
a.m.
Respectfully Submitted, Nancy Collier, Parish Education Chairman
Next Meeting: August 5, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in the Sunday School Room.
