How Do I Become Certified?TherearecurrentlyeighttestsintheMedium/HeavyTruckTechniciancertifica-tionseries.Class4throughClass8trucksarecovered.MediumdutyClass4–6is14,001to26,000lbs.grossvehicleweight(GVW).HeavydutyClass7–8is26,001andabovegrossvehicleweight(GVW). Ifyoupassoneormoretestsandhaveatleasttwoyearsofrelevanthands-onworkexperience,youwillbecomecertifiedasanASEMedium/HeavyTruckTechnician.IfyoupasstheDieselEnginesTest(T2)andtestsT3,T4,T5,T6,andT7youwillearnthecertificateofMasterMedium/HeavyTruckTechnician. IfyouarecurrentlycertifiedinDieselEngines(A9,H2,S2,orT2) andElectrical/ElectronicSystems(A6,H6,S6,orT6),youareeligibletotaketheL2ElectronicDieselEngineDiagnosisSpecialisttest.

Fromthere,allquestionsarepre-testedandquality-checkedonanationalsampleoftechnicians.ThosequestionsthatmeetASEstandardsofqualityandaccuracyareincludedinthetests;the“rejects”aresentbacktothedrawingboardordiscardedaltogether. Eachcertificationtestismadeupofbetween40and55multiple-choicequestions.Thetestingsessionsare4hoursand15minutes,allowingplenty oftimetocompleteseveraltests.Note: Eachtestcouldcontainuptofifteenadditionalquestionsthatareincludedforstatisticalresearchpurposesonly.Youranswerstothesequestionswillnotaffectyourscore,butsinceyoudonotknowwhichonestheyare,youshouldanswerallquestionsinthetest.Thefive-yearRecertificationTestwillcoverthesamecontentareasasthoselistedabove.However,thenumberofquestionsineachcontentareaoftheRecertificationTestwillbereducedbyaboutone-half.
How Do I Prepare for the ASE Tests?Becomefamiliarwithtestcontentandquestionformat:TheTestSpecificationsforeachofthetestscoveredinthisbookletcontainasummarydescriptionofthecontentcoveredbyeachtest.TheListsdescribetheactualworkperformedbytechniciansineachspecialtyarea.Together,theseforma“blueprint”forwritingandassemblingtheASEtests. Pleasenotethateachquestiononthetestiskeyedorlinkedtoaparticularorsetoftasksinthelist.Therefore,areviewofthelists,withaneyetojudgingwhetheryouknowhowtoperformeachlisted,willprovidevaluableinformationtoprepareforthetests. Therearefivetypesofmultiple-choicequestionsonthetests,eachofwhichisincludedinthesamplequestionsinthisbooklet.Notethedifferentinstructionsforsomequestions. Besuretoreadeachquestioncarefully,(twice,ifnecessary)sothatyouunderstandexactlywhatisbeingasked.Each question tests a specific diagnostic or repair problem and has only one best answer. • Testing and diagnostic knowledge and skill:Testsyourabilitytorecognizeproblemsandtousegenerallyavailablemeasurementandtestingequipmenttomakeadiagnosis.Alsotestsyourabilitytotracetheeffectsofaparticularconditionandfindthecauseofaparticularsetofsymptoms.
Ifyouareanexperiencedandcompetenttechnician,acarefulreviewofthisbooklet,andadditionalbrush-uponthoseareasinwhichyouareweakest,isallyoushouldneedtopasstheASEtests.
Before The TestsTrytobewellrestedforthetestssoyouwillbealertandefficient.Havethreeorfoursharpenedsoft-lead(#2)pencilsandaneraserwithyou;pencilswillnotbefurnishedatthetestcenter.Ifyouwishtopaceyourself,bringawatch,sincesometestingroomsmaynothaveclocks.Finally,besuretobringalongyourtestcenteradmissionticketandsomeformofidentification.
At the Test CenterWhenyoureachthetestcenter,waitintheassignedareauntiltheproctorbeginsthetestadministration.Heorshewillinstructyouinfillingouttheanswerfolderandwilltellyoutheamountoftimeallottedforeachtest. Oncethetesthasbegun,keeptrackoftime.Donotspendtoolongonanyonequestion.Ifaquestionisdifficult,marktheanswerthatyouthinkiscor-rectandputacheckbyitinthetestbook.Thengoontothenextquestion.Ifyoufinishbeforetheallottedtime,youmaygobacktothequestionsthatyouchecked.
