Luxfer Gas Cylinders is a leading global supplier of lightweight, high-pressure composite cylinders for
the storage and transportation of compressed natural gas (CNG), a clean-burning, environmentally
friendly alternative fuel (AF). Luxfer AF cylinders are also used for the storage of bio-methane,
hydrogen and other industrial bulk gases.
Luxfer AF composite cylinders are 66% lighter than Type 1 all-metal steel cylinders and offer improved fuel
economy, increased range and significantly reduced vehicle maintenance costs due to lessened wear on brakes,
tires and suspension systems. In haulage businesses, lower vehicle weights also allow higher payloads. Further,
lightweight composite cylinders can be manufactured in much larger diameters than typical all-metal steel
cylinders, meaning fewer composite cylinders are required to store the same volume of CNG.
Examples of the wide variety of applications around the world where Luxfer AF cylinders are used include:
CNG-powered automobiles; light-, and medium-duty trucks, buses and coaches; and truck-mounted bulk gas-
transportation modules and trailers.

Luxfer manufactures the comprehensive line of G-Stor Pro Type 3 AF cylinders at its state-of-the-art
manufacturing facilities in Riverside, California, and Calgary, Canada.
Europe
Many Luxfer customers require turnkey complete system solutions. In its Ratingen, Germany, manufacturing
facility, Luxfer manufactures fully-wrapped Type 3 AF cylinders, and designs and assembles the world’s
lightest-weight Alternative Fuel systems. Luxfer natural gas and hydrogen storage products and systems are
sold to major automotive, commercial and transit manufacturers.
Cylinder manufacturing
Luxfer’s G-Stor Pro Type 3 cylinders are made with seamless, homogenous
aluminum liners fully wrapped with high-strength, aerospace-grade carbon
fiber. The load-sharing liner provides an impermeable substructure for the
wrapping, which creates an internal cylinder surface free from welds, joints
and potential leak paths. Unlike permeable non-metallic, non-load-sharing
liners, Luxfer aluminum liners present thermal dynamic characteristics that
enable G-Stor Pro cylinders to be fast-filled—a significant productivity and
cost benefit for busy vehicle fleets.
Large-diameter aluminum liners are typically manufactured from seamless
aluminum tube, while smaller diameter liners are made from aluminum plate;
cold drawing and hot spinning processes are used to create required liner
geometry. Liners then undergo heat treatment to optimize mechanical
properties. Since heat treatment is an exacting process, Luxfer has made
significant investments in a fully automated, in-house heat-treatment facility
to ensure that temperatures, heating times and dwell times are precisely
controlled.
On completion of heat treatment, internal threads and outer neck configurations are precision-machined into the
liner. The machining operation is followed by a quality inspection. The liner is then fully-wrapped with epoxy-
impregnated high-strength carbon fiber where an optimal in-house engineered winding pattern is employed to
yield a lightweight AF cylinder will be filled to a prescribed operating pressure, typically 3,600 psi.
Finally, each cylinder is hydrostatically tested, dried and thoroughly inspected. Two cylinders are removed from
each manufacturing lot to undergo rigorous cycle and burst testing.
