An offer you just can´t refuse

”Take a seat my friend”. He leans back with a slight gesture towards the empty chair. It is black, leathered – ge-nuine. The late afternoon sun casts long shadows across the black and white tiled floor, and I can only make out the man at the other end of the table as a dark silhouette, I sit down. ”What can I do for you?” His voice is as calm and businesslike as always. Just as I re-member. He doesn´t seem surprised to see me again. Comfortably seated in his chair, nothing seems to be able to surprise him. Even though I can´t discern his face in the half-light I can sense his penetrating gaze. How it measures me.

There is no way that I could hide anything from those eyes. Might as well lay all the cards on the table.”I´ve come to ask for your help” I try to keep my voice steady.”You´ve got problems?””Yes, I´m about to furnish an office. And I need really neat furniture. Can you help me out?” The question hovers in the air for a second, before he breaks the silence:”Well, of course! You´re my friend – I do anything for my friends.” He comes towards me and puts his hand on my shoulder. ”As a matter of fact, I already think I have the solution to your problem...”

Why didn´t you come to me first?

Helge Leikanger

Studied interior Architecture and Furniture Design at Ber-gen National Academy of the Arts, Norway. Received his diploma in 1979 and a design scholarship in 1980. His work has been honored with the Award for Good Design from the Norwegian Design Council in 1984 and 1996.

What is your favorite piece of furniture from Modart?

I don´t really like ranking my own furniture. But I do have a special relationship to Fatboy.

Where do you get your inspiration?

When an idea of mine is approved, and I get to follow it from the first sketch to the final result. An idea can be born over a glass of good wine and good music!

What is good design to you?

It has to be something that you can rest your eyes upon, it doesn´t have to be furniture. Innovative and exciting, with both form and functionality - timeless!

Name a famous person you think should fit in a Modart chair.

Tina Turner would fit nicely in a Spirit chair. Perhaps with a specially made footrest.

T-Gul Industrial Design

Even if T-Gul designed furniture before, this is our first cooperative design job. So far, our work with Modart has really whetted our appetite and we hope to develop it further in the future.T-Gul Industrial Design has its roots firmly set in Swedish design tradition. We know how to find the artistic expression for strong impressions.

What is your favorite piece of furniture from Modart?

It´s great that Modart has embraced an eyebrow raiser like pazzo!

What´s the inspiration behind your furniture?

Our inspiration comes from everywhere. As designers we work in several businesses and our different projects contribute to each

other. The inspiration to pazzo came from Bauhaus, even if it isn´t a Bauhaus chair in itself, but also from the dentist´s chair in Little

Shop of Horrors and from futuristic movies like Terry Gilliam´s Brazil.

What is good design to you?

Good design is a strategic resource which generates experiences that allows people and organizations to develop. It is a fine balan-ce between innovation, functionality and esthetics which together

makes good ideas visible and accessible.

Name a famous person you think should fit in a Modart chair.

Pierluigi Collina, the Italian former football referee, who widely regar-ded as one of the world´s best officials. Also known as Capo di tutti

capi (boss of all bosses.) He would fit perfectly in Capo di Capi!

Seriously.Why are offices so dull?Why can´t you have an office designed with a bit of sting?Something that gives life to those every-day routines.Not so pretentious. And not so bloody boring.

Furniture needs both attitude and comfort. Important decisions call for comfortable furniture.

Fashion constantly changes, but our furniture is always up-to-date. We design them in a classical, clean style, but with a great portion of personality. Furniture for business kings and street lords alike.
