Mums supporting mums across Kirklees The final two Baby Bistros in Kirklees have now opened in Savile Town and Chickenley. This means that every locality can now offer additional support to mums by mums through the volunteering opportunities breastfeeding peer supporters can now access.

By working closely with Sure Start Children’s Centres the team have seen the opening of seven Baby Bistros in total providing information and support in a relaxed environment from a network of local mums who volunteer their time to support other mums with breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding Bulletin

Calling all breastfeeding peer supportersOur breastfeeding peer supporters attended a celebration event last month as recognition and praise for the dedication and support they offer to breastfeeding mums across Kirklees.

With almost 40 volunteers trained as breastfeeding peer supporters in 2009/10 it has been an extremely rewarding year with peer supporters helping to support the Baby Bistro's, Baby Cafes, maternity wards and community based parent craft classes.

Our team of breastfeeding peer supporters have developed good networks which give them an opportunity to share knowledge, experiences and support each other as well as a chance to take on additional training.

Visit the popular Kirklees Breastfeeding Bistro FaceBook page to keep up-to-date with local news. The online group is now getting over 100 visits per week since it began last September.

If you know of any mums who would be interested in supporting other mums to breastfeed please contact Dorothy Clayton on 07507 603500 or Christine Stephen on 07534 260943

Breastfeeding friendly Dewsbury and BatleyWatch out for a new booklet featuring places that provide Breastfeeding Friendly facilities in Dewsbury and Batley. We have already got Sainsbury’s, Tesco’s and Asda on board along with many other shops, cafes and restaurants.

As soon as the booklet is complete we will be distributing it to shops, Children’s Centres, GP practices and information centres. If you know of any retailers who might want to be included in the booklet contact Amanda Jewell on 01924 351490.

Breastfeeding Awareness Week

For the second year running we are planning on holding a breastfeeding one stop shop as part of Breastfeeding Awareness Week. The Packhorse Centre in Huddersfield will host a team from 21 to 25 June each day from 10-3pm.

The team will offer advice, support and friendly encouragement to mothers who have chosen to breastfeed or who are able to support a family member to breastfeed by engaging with communities through a wider initiative such as this.

During last year’s campaign we talked to more than 200 people who were keen to drop in for a chat. This included young mums, dads, grand-parents, friends of breastfeeding mums and of course babies and children.

Once again there will be freebies, leaflets, balloons etc to be given out on the day. If you are interested in being involved contact Amanda Jewell 01924 351490.

and Baby CafesRace For Life - Cancer UK CharityAs part of extended celebrations an ever growing number of people are taking part in the Huddersfield Race for Life event at Leeds Road Playing fields at 2:30pm on Sunday 4 July.

We will be at the event raising awareness of the links between the reduced risk of breast cancer by breastfeeding which has been widely researched and evidence based.

Our Baby Bistros and Baby Café Centres of Excellence will be given the opportunity to join in the campaign week. Contact your local venue for more details.

Breastfeeding Bulletin

The national Start4Life team have informed us that the Banana Challenge will be removed from all future Start4Life literature.

The choking risk has been assessed and viewed as too high so promotion of the 'test' or 'challenge' should not continue locally.

However, the three signs of when a baby is ready to wean are still valid.

These are;

Your baby is ready if they can:

• Stay in a sitting position and are able to hold their head steady

• Co-ordinate their eyes, hands and mouth, can look at food, grab it, and put it in their mouths all by themselves

• Swallow their food. Babies who are not ready will often push their food back out, so get more around their faces than they do in their mouths.

The regional Department of Health (public health group) and Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber Children and Learners Directorate are working together to promote breastfeeding to young people within schools.

To help this work they have purchased the Best Beginnings, ‘Get Britain Breastfeeding’ Exhibition which is an innovative display that encourages discussions around the benefits of breastfeeding.

Health in schools and breast feeding teams are being offered the opportunity to borrow the ‘Get Britain Breastfeeding’ exhibition for the use within their secondary schools. The exhibition is a set of seven individual pull up stands and a postcard display stand. These stands can be used all together or separately. The display creates the opportunity to discuss the benefits of breastfeeding and dispel the myths around breastfeeding.

It is proposed that the exhibition will be available in the Kirklees area from 17 May – 9 July and the regional team will arrange the transport to and from the local areas and local areas will be responsible for housing and transporting the exhibition around the schools in their area.

Along with the display each venue will receive 20 workbooks, worksheets templates and evaluation templates to support you to use the exhibition effectively.

The exhibition can either be used in PHSE lessons or in health fairs. It is particularly effective with Key Stage 3, but can be of use for KS4 & A level students. It is aimed at both boys and girls to help encourage positive discussions around breastfeeding.

If you are interested in using the exhibition or know a school who might like to use it contact Jayne Heley, Baby Friendly Initiative Coordinator on 01924351490 or [email protected]

update

The KCHS Breastfeeding Standard Operating Procedure 2010/12 has recently been ratified and all relevant staff should have access to it and be familiar with the principles and guidance in it in supporting mums and families to breastfeed through a fully informed choice.

Watch out for the Kirklees Breastfeeding three year strategy 'Breastfeeding in Kirklees - Part of Everyday Life' which will be disseminated over the next few weeks.

Breast pump loaning systemAll health visiting teams and Children Centres have access to at least two electric breast pumps and additional collection sets. Breast pumps enable mums to express milk and can help mums to feed their child using breast milk for longer. Updated loan forms have been sent out to all health visiting and Children Centre teams.

If you have any queries or issues with any of the pumps please contact Rachel Goddard, Ardo Medical representative on 07850 521870 who would be more than happy to help deal with any problems.

Special thanks to Allison Howitt, breastfeeding champion who recently bought four breast pumps with small grant monies.

Research seminar - Biological nurturing: Laid back breastfeeding The University of Huddersfield are hosting a seminar on

17 June at Commercial Street Lecture Theatre, Estates Building from 1-2pm.

Lunch will be served from 12.30pm.

Contact Alison Holmes on 01484 473646 or [email protected] for more details or to register your attendance.

A step closer NHS Kirklees are currently working towards the stage 1 assessment of the baby friendly accreditation process.

This next step is designed to make sure that the necessary policies, guidelines and information are in place to allow health-care providers to implement the Baby Friendly standards effectively.

The stage 1 assessment covers four areas. These are:

• Breastfeeding policy

• Staff education

• Information for pregnant women and new mothers

• The International Code of Marketing of breast milk substitutes

For more information on the Baby Friendly initiative contact Jayne Heley on 01924 351437 or email [email protected]

Artificial milk substitutesArtificial milk substitutesThe Baby Friendly Initiative has produced a new guide for parents who have chosen to bottle feed. This guide is an impartial introduction to the different types of infant formula available and also covers feeding methods, recognising when your baby is hungry or full, weight gain and selecting bottles and teats. It is designed to be given to parents with the DH bottle feeding leaflet in the very early postnatal period.

You can also download a health professional's guide to the leaflet, which has been designed to equip health professionals with the scientific evidence around the recommendations in the parents’ leaflet. It contains the latest information on infant formula regulations and research and is written by experts in this field.

At the moment both the parents and the health professional leaflet are available for download only at www.babyfriendly.org.uk

Artificial milk in hospitalThose mums who choose not to breastfeed will no longer be supplied with artificial milk for babies whilst in hospital. If mums choose to bottle feed it is important that they take a small tin of artificial milk into hospital with them as well as a bottle and a teat.

If would like to know more about what is happening locally regarding breastfeeding awareness and promotion or would like to take part in any of these breastfeeding initiatives please contact Amanda Jewell who is part of the breastfeeding team for Kirklees on

01924 351490.

Nurture range of infant milksHeinz is proposing to discontinue its range of Nurture baby milks so as to focus on growing and developing its popular range of infant weaning foods and drinks. The proposal affects the UK market only and is subject to consultatio n with affected employees.

Families using this brand of baby milks will need to gradually move their baby onto a different formula milk. The milks would be phased out gradually over a period of several weeks to allow parents time to switch to alternative products.

For more information about the proposal visit www.heinzbaby.co.uk

Breastfeeding substitutesYou may be aware of Emma’s Diary, an online and paper publication for pregnant women. Apparently the paper version currently contains an insert promoting the use of breast milk substitutes. This is in violation of the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes and therefore if any of our healthcare facilities distributes Emma’s Diary we would fail our Baby Friendly assessment.

Calling all link health visitors with GP practices Please try and discuss with your GP practices the process of returning all breastfeeding data from the six to eight week infant medical review to child health via the DER form or the infant medical review form.

If you have any queries about returning the data please contact Jayne Heley or Ann Keeton in South Kirklees or Debbie Corcoran in North Kirklees.
