Your Students’ UnionNursing and Midwifery students are full members of the Students’ Union and have the same rights to use facilities and get involved in the Union as any other student. Many of you are based at sites outside Southampton and may therefore not have easy access to all the facilities we offer. We have tried to arrange alternative facilities where possible, as listed below. We will also be arranging transport to some of our key events during the year.

Students’ Union Facilities As a member of Southampton University Students’ Union you have access to all Students’ Union facilities, such as clubs and societies, advice and information services, bars, shops etc. For more information, see the Freshers’ Magazine or check out our web site at www.susu.org.

In summary, the facilities at each site are:

Southampton• Highfield Campus - The Students’ Union here offers

a wide range of services to members: Students’ Union Advice & Information Centre, Coffee Bar, Shop, Nightline, Night Club, Bars and Entertainments. There are also many activities in which students can get involved, including nearly 200 sporting and non-sporting societies, media production, volunteering in the community, raising money for charity, etc. The main Union building has been redeveloped to include state of the art nightclub, bars and cinema.

• General Hospital - Unfortunately we don’t have

facilities at this site - watch the notice boards for Union information.

• Avenue Campus & Oceanography The Students’ Union has office space and notice boards at these sites, for use by students.

Winchester The Students’ Union at the Winchester Campus runs an excellent nightclub/bar venue - and the Winchester President (sabbatical officer) also has an office there.

Please check with the Students’ Union Advice & Information Centre about term time surgeries at the Winchester campus.

PortsmouthSouthampton University Students’ Union (SUSU) has a reciprocal agreement with the University of Portsmouth Students’ Union (UPSU), which means that members of SUSU can access the following Union facilities at Portsmouth:

•Social facilities, bars, events, etc. at the Students’ Union.

• Join clubs and societies.

• Get involved in Union activities such as newspaper production, volunteering in the community, etc.

• Use the advice services of the Union.

But can’t:• be represented at academic

appeals or on other academic matters.

In such cases students would have to contact the Students’ Union Advice & Information Centre at SUSU.

• Vote in Union elections, stand for election, attend Union committees, or otherwise participate in the governance of the University of Portsmouth Students’ Union.

•Sign in guests - sorry, it is the law!

Basingstoke & Isle of WightFacilities at Basingstoke and the Isle of Wight are limited but each site has access to a local gym where they can pay the same price as the Jubilee Sports Centre on Highfield campus. We want to support you so please get in contact to tell us how we can.

Students’ Union MembershipAll students of the University of Southampton are members of the Students’ Union and are entitled to use all Union facilities, to stand and vote in Union elections and otherwise participate in running the Union.

Membership works as follows:• All students attending a credit-

bearing course of the University of Southampton are full members of the Students’ Union. This includes full-time and part-time students, undergraduates and postgraduates, UK and international students.

• You automatically become a member of the Students’ Union when you register on your course. Your University ID card (sometimes called a ‘smart card’) is also your Students’ Union membership card.

National Union of Students MembershipSince 1st January 2003 the Southampton University Students’ Union has disaffiliated from the National Union of Students. This decision resulted from a vote during the AGM in the summer of 2001, up to date information is provided on our website.

For the individual student disaffiliation means:• No NUS card - but we have worked

with local businesses to ensure that your Southampton ID card will entitle you to discounts locally. Full-time students can also purchase an International Students Identity Card (ISIC), which is accepted nationally and internationally and entitles you to a range of discounts. ISICs can be purchased from the Students’ Union reception desk on the concourse.

Representation in the School of Health SciencesCourse Representatives - throughout the University play an important role in representing the views of students on matters relating to their course of study. The School of Health Sciences and the Students’ Union have been working together to develop support for Course Representatives, for example by paying the expenses of representatives to attend meetings, running training and producing Course Representative handbooks.

Financial MattersNHS FundingThose who undertake an NHS funded diploma course receive a non-means tested bursary. Depending on your circumstances you may be eligible for extra allowances, for example, if you have children. Those who undertake an NHS funded degree course receive a means tested bursary. Your tuition fees are paid, but the grant allowance you receive will depend on your income or that of your partner/parents. You may also be able to apply for a Student Loan from the Student Loans Company (not from the NHS).

Different funding rules apply to International Students and E.U. Students and EEA Migrant workers - Do not necessarily assume that your funding is correct if you fall into one of these categories.

Contact the School of Health Sciences or SUAIC for details (see back page for contact details).

Student LoansStudents on degree courses can apply for a Student Loan to bring their income up to the minimum loan amount, to help with your living costs such as accommodation, food, clothes, travel and so on. Contact Student Finance England for more information.

Access to Learning Fund (ALF)Appointments are available from Financial Information and Assistance, Student Services Centre, Building 37, Highfield Campus (see back page for contact details).

The ALF is intended to assist students in financial difficulty whilst on their course.

Students in receipt of non-means tested bursaries are not

eligible for Student Loans.

Welfare BenefitsWe strongly advise students wishing to find out about entitlement to welfare benefits to contact SUAIC, and consult our booklet on Students and Benefits. This can be downloaded from http://suaic.susu.org/download International students who require a visa to come to the UK have particular restrictions on claiming benefits and should contact SUAIC.

Students with disabilities who are funded by the NHS may be affected by new rules on the Disabled Students Allowance from September 2002. Contact SUAIC or the University Disability Co-ordinator for details (see back page for contact details.)

Applicants will be expected to have applied for their full statutory student support entitlement before they can apply to the ALF Fund.

University Hardship FundThe University has a small fund to assist UK and International students experiencing financial difficulty and who:

• are not eligible for local authority funding or other sponsorship;

• have experienced a substantial and unexpected change in circumstances since beginning their course of study.

Contact the International Students’ Adviser at SUAIC.

Money AdviceIf you are having money problems then we have a separate booklet on budgeting which might help you. You can find this at SUAIC or online at: www.susu.org/download

You can also follow the advice below:

• Contact the Students’ Union Advice & Information Centre to see if you are eligible for extra help and for assistance in sorting out your finances.

• Work out your income and expenditure and try to stick to a weekly or monthly budget. A SUAIC adviser can help you do this.

• Collect together all the documents you have relating to your sources of income and expenditure, pay-slips, outstanding bills, etc. It is important to look at your overall situation and not just respond to emergencies.

Students’ Union Advice & Information Centre www.susu.org

• Be honest - with yourself and with the people to whom you owe money. Agreeing to make large repayments when you cannot afford to do so, will just create more problems.

• Don’t be intimidated by letters threatening legal action. Most financial difficulties can be resolved without going to court - as long as you don’t leave it too late.

• Visit Brightside UNIAID for advice including an online student calculator.

Please seek help immediately if you are having

financial problems that you feel you cannot manage.
