An army of artists is boy-cotting the official opening

ceremony of the Bangkok Artand Culture Centre (BACC).Her Majesty Queen Sirikit willpreside over the event, set totake place on August 19.

The artists are unhappy withpoliticians and officials from theBangkok Metropolitan Admin-istration (BMA) who they sayhave continued to interfere withthe running of the centre.

‘We should manage it’“The centre is a place for arts

– artists should be allowed tomanage it,” says PatravadiTheatre founder and promi-

nent actress Patravadi Meeju-dhon. “So far, the BMA has sim-ply hired a private company tohandle the opening ceremonywithout consulting us first.”

Echoing her complaints arePradit Prasartthong and Chum-pon Apisuk. Pradit is from theBangkok Theatre Networkwhile Chumpon is secretarygeneral of the Network ofArtists for BACC.

“We are not going to co-oper-ate with the BACC until itsmanagement is free from inter-ference,” Pradit says.

Built with a Bt500-millionbudget, the arts venue has beenopen to the public for morethan a year already, though itsofficial inauguration has only

just been scheduled.

Artists not consulted A source said the BMA had

indeed planned the openingceremony without consultingartists. “In fact, these artists siton a sub-committee whichshould have been consulted,”the source added.

According to the source, thecompany handling the ceremo-ny has offered to pay betweenBt5,000 and Bt10,000 per exhibitsent in by interested artists. It isstill unclear how many will takeup the offer, and how many willturn up at the opening.

Located at the Pathumwan In-tersection, the BACC is open be-tween 10am and 9pm Tuesday toSunday. As well as art galleries, its 25,000 square metres featuresshops, eateries, conferencerooms and an auditorium.

THE CITYBuffaloesget a boostScientists are cooking up a super-breed to protect the beast of burden from extinction

Reacting to fears thatthe Thai buffalo could

be on its way to extinction, the Livestock Develop-ment Department andChulalongkorn Univer-sity’s Faculty of VeterinaryScience are set to visit theNortheast in October togather data for the ani-mal’s conservation.

The move follows con-cerns voiced by HRHPrincess Maha ChakriSirindhorn that Thai buf-faloes are being eradicatedby the growing use of trac-tors in rice farming.

Seeking perfectionTheera Pattarapornnant,

a researcher with a teamthat is developing a body-scanning device for Thaibuffaloes at the NationalElectronics and ComputerTechnology Centre(NECTEC), said yesterdaythat the NECTEC had con-sulted with the two agen-cies to establish a workingteam to determine the stan-dard size of Thai buffaloes.

While the NECTEC wasdeveloping the scanner, the two agencies wouldvisit the lower northeast-ern region and collaboratewith local experts to select250 model buffalo speci-mens and survey theirphysical aspects, Theerasaid. The survey wouldtake about two years togather the data, he added.

Snappingfor safetyTraffic cameras putthe brake on road accidents; fines can now be paid at 7-Eleven

D A I L Y X P R E S S

Police are easing thepain for motorists

caught running red lightsby allowing them to paythe traffic fine over thecounter at one of 8,000outlets nationwide includ-ing all 7-Eleven stores.

Motorists simply needto present the ticket alongwith their ID card to paythe Bt500 fine plus theBt35 service fee, saidDeputy MetropolitanPolice Commissioner fortraffic, Maj-General PanuKerdlarpphol, yesterday.

Since the traffic camerashad gone up at junctions,he said, the number of red-light-runners had declinedcontinuously. In January,62,490 traffic tickets wereissued but by last monththat figure had dropped bymore than half, to 30,026.

Panu added that thecameras and fines had cutthe number of accidentson the road by tacklingone of their major causes –running red lights. Call 1197 or visitwww.TrafficPolice.go.th for details.

Malaysian gets jail forforcing wife to have sexA Malaysian man who forced hiswife to have sex with him hasbeen sentenced to the maximumfive years in jail, in the country’sfirst successful prosecution undera new law against marital rape.

The amendment to the penalcode that made marital rape acrime was considered a small steptoward women’s rights. But someactivists say it doesn’t go farenough because the law doesn’tstipulate a minimum sentence, which means a man could go tojail for as little as a day even ifconvicted.

The 35-year-old man was alsosentenced to three lashes of thewhip for forcing his wife to haveanal sex. Anal sex, even whenconsensual, is a crime punishableby up to 20 years imprisonment inMalaysia. The sentences are to runconcurrently. The man changedhis plea from innocent to guilty forboth charges.A P

Asexually frustrated manwho killed three women

in a Pennsylvania health club, then himself, blogged hispreparations – with the finalchilling entry announcing the“big day”.

The killer, who late onTuesday burst into the LAFitness Gym in Bridgeville, near Pittsburgh, and sprayed36 bullets, apparently wrotethe blog on a personal Webpage starting last November.

On the eve of the killings, hewrote: “Took off today,Monday, and tomorrow topractise my routine and make

sure it is well polished...Tomorrow is the big day.”

Local police superintendentCharles Moffatt said the killer,George Sodini, preparedmeticulously.

Used three gunsAfter twice visiting the gym

earlier in the day, Sodini en-tered the Latin dance class, turned off the lights andopened fire, Moffatt said.

Sodini used three guns: two9mm semi-automatics and a.45-calibre revolver he turnedon himself. A total of 12 peoplewere shot.

“He shot at least 36 times.

He had clips of ammunitionthat held 30 rounds,” Moffattsaid, noting that the military-style ammunition had been le-gal since 2004, when a ban ex-pired.

According to Moffatt,“there’s nobody that was in thatclub that could have done any-thing to prevent Mr Sodini”from carrying out the murders.

The blog, which Moffatt saidwas being treated as genuine, and which was quickly pulledoff the Internet, reveals a sin-ister, often banal mind of aman crippled by sexual frus-tration, anger at women anddepression.

A picture of Sodini, 48, at-tached to the blog shows alean, white male with slightlygraying hair and wearing asmart blue shirt.

Gazing down upon the visi-tors to the temple complex

at Bagan in Burma is a very mys-terious Buddha figure. The 10-metre-high statue in the south-ern niche of Ananda templesmiles benevolently on everyonewho approaches, but as you ap-proach the statue its facial ex-pression changes with everystep.

When you stand just in front ofthe Buddha and look up you see avery serious face. The change isdue to a play of shadow and lightbut the optical illusion could beemblematic of the entire country.

Standing in Burma’s lighterside are its history and culturethat stretch back more than amillennia while in the shadowstands its military dictatorship, which has ruled the countrysince 1962.

Its temples stand in starkcontrast to the regime’s torture

prisons, its mostly unobtrusivepeople to the army who forcechildren to take up weaponsand suppress minorities.

Making contactIs it right to travel to such a

country? It is true that some ho-

tels and airlines are in the handsof the regime’s henchmen, butpeople like taxi drivers, travelguides, gardeners and chamber-maids survive on income fromtourists.

Contact with guests is alsoone of the few gateways to the

outside world that people have, says one guide.

Anyone who makes the longjourney from Bangkok to theport city of Rangoon enters an-other world. The country issteeped in Buddhism, as can beseen from the countlessBuddha statues around thecountry or from the magnifi-cent buildings such as theShwedagon Pagoda inRangoon. Its 100-metre-highstupa is the city’s emblem.

Mandalay is about 700 kilo-metres north of Rangoon andhome to the Mahmuni Pagoda,Burma’s most important pil-grimage site next to theShwedagon Pagoda.

The Mahmuni Buddha is fourmetres high but beneath itschin it has been deformed intoa shapeless clump of goldthanks to the gold leaves placedthere by pilgrims over the last150 years.

Bagan is what could be de-scribed as a Buddha paradisethanks to its 2,700 pagodas. It isa stunning site on a par withCambodia’s temple complex atAngkor.

Friendly BuddhaEach pagoda has its own

unique story. The largest is theDhammayangyi Temple built in1167 by King Narathu.According to legend Narathuwas a strict ruler. If he couldplace a needle between blocksin the temple’s wall that meantdeath for the mason.

Another highlight is WatAnanda, built in 1105, with itssometimes friendly, sometimesserious Buddha. If you leave thetemple by its southern gate andcast a glance over your shoul-der you will see the kindly face.

British pop babes theSaturdays’ brief show on

Tuesday at Zense, the restau-rant-bar way up above Zen,featured the six singles thatare still charting in Britain –“If This is Love”, “Just Can’tGet Enough”, “ChasingLights”, “Issues”, “Work” and“Up”.

And it also gave Xpressanother chance to chat upthe girls. Rochelle and Una satdown to talk before flyingoff to Malaysia for the nextshow.

So how’s Thailand been?Thailand is lovely! We’ve

had such a good time. We likethe spicy food and the peopleare very nice – we got such awarm welcome.

So how come you’re onlyhere for one show?

We just want to introduceourselves on this trip.We want to branch out intoAsia.

We don’t think we’ve re-leased enough songs overhere, so we want to build ourfoundation around the world. So this time we just want toimpress people and hopefullywe’ll come back and have abigger show.

What do you think is spe-cial about your album?

We’re really proud of it be-cause we have five singles inthe UK top 10. It’s one ofthose albums that, when youput it on, you’re not going toskip through every song.

And it has a mixture ofballads, pop rock, R’n’B andsoul.

What projects are in thepipeline?

We just finished recordingthe new album and we’re go-ing to release the first singlein October in the UK. We justfinished shooting the musicvideo for it last week.

Will it be the same style? It’s a progression from the

old one, really. We think it’sbetter than our first album. We worked with some pro-ducers in LA and some ofthem have worked with LadyGaGa and Rihanna.

Any farewell message foryour fans here?

We’re glad you liked thesongs and we hope you cometo the show next time. Pleasekeep following our updates onTwitter or on our website,www.TheSaturdays.co.uk!

Call in serendipity. Whiledriving along Chiang

Mai’s city moat, we spottedwhat looked like a charmingrestaurant and pulled in, onlyto discover two restaurantswithin the same compound.More brightly lit with a livelyfeel, Ginger&Kafe was almostfull, with clients relaxing onthe outside seating underwhite canopies.

We opted for the dinner-on-ly The House and were imme-diately enchanted by the soft-lit and intimate ambience aswell as the nimble fretwork ofresident classical guitaristKho Thet, the deciding factorfor the music teacher in ourgroup.

The House serves diversedishes to accommodate everypalate. You can opt for thenorthern style Sai Ua andKhao Soi at very reasonableprices or choose more luxuri-ous Western dishes.

The tapas selection is espe-cially impressive. While KhoThet played Chopin’s “No 7 inA Major” with Segovia-likemastery, I indulged in chickensatay skewer with lemongrassand peanut butter sauce.

We unanimously agreedthat whoever is responsiblefor this kind of perfectionmust be gay, and soon got ourconfirmation from co-ownerChatchai Jultamara, whocame around to oversee theservice. “My partner and Ilove wining and dining.

We entertain friends all thetime, so a restaurant has al-ways been our dream,” saysChatchai, who contributed hisprevious professional experi-ence at Four Seasons HotelSingapore to this labour oflove.

In 2003, Chatchai’s partner,

Danish fashion and homewaredesigner Hans Christensen, chanced upon thisold and badlyneglectedhouse. Helearned ithad beenbuilt inthe ’30sby a fel-low Daneto serve asthe northernheadquartersof the East AsiaticCompany. After exten-sive renovations, The House
