SpringF A S H I O N

With Spring well underway and Summer fast approaching, Sam Palmer, visual merchandiser at House of Fraser in Telford Shopping Centre tells Hub it’s time to ‘get gorgeous, playful and feminine’ in this season’s hottest trends…

2. NeaPoliTaN iCe CreamIce cream coloured pastels are undoubtedly one of the

strongest trends this season with stores awash with mint green, yellow sorbet and candy floss pink. Inspired by Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Alexander McQueen, this mouth-watering trend is guaranteed to get you in the mood for Summer. Pair pastel coloured jeans with a shirt or a plain white tee and blazer or, for full on ice cream parlour chic, choose a pastel coloured skater style dress.

Miss Selfridge dress £42, Dune suede colour block shoes £99, Dune colour block handbag £65.

Warehouse chiffon top £50, Warehouse mint vest £6,

Therapy mint trousers £35, French Connection hat £18.50,

Ted Baker bag £89, Dune coral pumps £55.

1. WaiST-deFiNiNg PePlumS

It’s a word thrown around a lot in the fashion industry but what exactly is a Peplum? Seen on celebrities

like Michelle Williams who wowed at this year’s Oscars

in a vibrant Louis Vuitton gown, a Peplum is a short flared, gathered, or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a garment. Peplums are a real celebration of the female silhouette and not only do they help accentuate boyish hips, they also mask less-than-flat tummies. Miss Selfridge’s pink Peplum mini dress is a great way to show off this style or, if you’re feeling a little less daring, add a little catwalk glamour to your work wardrobe with a Peplum shirt and knee length skirt.

3. amaziNg laCeWhether you go for sultry

red or black as seen on the likes of Miranda Kerr, Jessie J and Emma Watson or girly white crochet worn by Natalie Portman and Vanessa Hudgens, lace is a must-have for any fashionista’s wardrobe this Spring/Summer. Inspired by Miu Miu, Phase Eight’s raspberry coloured lace dress is the perfect item of clothing for channelling the trend and is ideal for a night out when teamed with heels and a clutch bag.

4. ouT oF aFriCaTribal and ethnic prints

have been around for a few seasons and are back once

again for this Spring/Summer but this time with a touch of subtlety. Rather than whole outfits devoted to the trend, designers have instead borrowed patterns and ideas from tribal cultures and cleverly worked them into Western garments. This kaftan jumper from Linea with its ethnic print and trimmed sleeves is the ideal way to wear the tribal trend. Pair with skinny jeans, sandals and bold statement jewellery.

All outfits featured are available at House of Fraser, Telford Shopping Centre.

Phase Eight dress £120, Dune beaded shoes £110, Dune beaded clutch £55.

Ziba cuff £125, Dune metal trim sandal £70.

Wedding Fayreindependent makers and Sellers

re you getting married and struggling to find something individual, something a bit ‘different’ for your wedding? Then this fayre might just be for you!

Showcasing the best independent makers, crafters and retailers from around the West Midlands, South Staffordshire and East Shropshire, this event is designed to bring to you the people that you may otherwise never have found.

There will be between twenty and thirty of the region’s not-on-the-high-street businesses under one roof, many of whom specialise in one off, handmade and bespoke designs for your big day. Currently, these include handmade cake toppers, handmade jewellery, custom gowns and dresses and photographers. There is also a magician, which I am assured is THE next big thing for entertaining your guests, and a violinist who plays not only classical music, but also pop songs and reggae!

There also may be a few freebies, and a competition or two . . .

pril sees the Tigers end their season with a home game against basingstoke bison on april 1st. With the season at an end attention

turns to building for next season, before that a quick reflection on what Tigers have achieved in their second year as a Supporters Trust run club. Under player coach Tom Watkins, the Tigers have become the first squad in the English Premier League to take points of every team in the league for over 10 years, showing that despite having the lowest wage budget in the league and the youngest squad they are more than a match for anyone on their day. March also saw the team achieve back to back victories with a 4-1 win on the road at Basingstoke, followed by a 2-0 home win against high flying Milton Keynes, where young British netminder Dec Ryan achieved his first shutout. The clubs reputation for nurturing young British talent continues to grow under Watkins stewardship, with 4 players being selected to represent Great Britain in the Under 20’s World Championships this season, where Watkins himself was selected to be assistant coach.

Plans are well under way for next season with coach Watkins agreeing a new deal to stay at the club, saying ‘i’m pleased to have reached an agreement and delighted to be staying with the club for a third season.’

With Telford Ice rink being refurbished over the summer and the nucleus of a developing squad, next season promises to be an exciting and eventful one, so wether you’re a die hard fan, or thinking of coming to see what it’s all about, keep an eye on our website www.telfordtigers.co.uk for news on team signings, fixtures and our programe of summer events.

t’s 2012, the year of the diamond Jubilee and the London olympics...and so it appears, the perfect year to holiday at home.

A national campaign has been launched by VisitEngland supported by famous faces asking us to consider holidaying in the UK. The £5m campaign has brought on board actresses Julie Walters and Michelle Dockery as well as actors Stephen Fry and Rupert Grint to promote the ‘staycation’ drive.

The television advertising campaign will also focus on additional destinations, including Blackpool, Skegness, Yorkshire and Liverpool. All four are within a few hours drive of Telford, and have attractions galore to pull in the tourists this year.

BlackpoolIt may still be battling it’s Kiss Me Quick hat reputation but

Blackpool really is the town with something for everyone. New attractions like the Blackpool Tower Dungeon and Madame Tussauds as well as the open-air Tower Festival Headland on the promenade, which is going to be opened by Elton John in June, are changing the perception of the town. And it’s also been helped by the glamour and glitz of the live Strictly Come Dancing television shows broadcast from the famous ballroom.

The work along the sea front has created beautiful Spanish Steps, linking the promenade to the beach, as well as a huge new headland spaces. The major new multi-entertainment space is a new piece of land, extending the existing promenade 60 metres seaward and right in the shadow of the famous Blackpool Tower.

With so many B&Bs to choose from, where’s somewhere a little different? Try Number One Blackpool (www.numberoneblackpool.com) - a chic three-bedroom residence combining the style and luxury of a top-notch hotel with the friendly informality of a classic B&B.

SkegnessBrits have been taking family holidays on this part of the

Lincolnshire Coast for more than 100 years. Although still home to a Butlins resort and donkey rides, Skegness has developed what it offers to tourists in recent years, with a seal sanctuary and animal centre, the Captain Kids adventure centre, and of course, Skegness Pier.

But the enduring appeal of Skegness is its European award-winning beach, with clean sand and a safe sea to paddle in. The resort will no doubt be boosted by the question being asked by Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary Crawley asking: “Why wouldn’t you want to holiday here?” in the new television campaign.

And when it comes to where to stay, why not give Butlins (www.butlins.com) a try? Gone are the Hi-De-Hi chalets, replaced with New England-style accommodation perfect for a family break.

YorkshireWith more than 800 attractions from castles to mines

and World Heritage Sites to hands-on museums, Yorkshire is expecting to see a increasing number of tourists this summer. Not least as 2012 marks a particularly significant year in York’s history being the 800th year since the city was granted its Royal Charter by King John. York is one of the most historic cities in England and boasts an array of beautiful landmarks such as York Minster, the Bar Walls, Clifford’s Tower and The Shambles, all tied into the history of the city which dates back almost 2000 years. Other attractions such as the Jorvik Centre, The National Railway Museum and Castle Museum means you’ll never be short of something to do.

And of course, outside of York there is some of the best countryside the UK has to offer, whether that’s horse riding in the Dales, mountain biking through Dalby Forest or having a wander through Saltaire.

And if you’re looking for somewhere to lay your head, why not see Yorkshire from the water? Hire a narrowboat through Shire Cruisers (www.shirecruisers.co.uk) for a boating holiday on the Pennine canals.

LiverpoolWhat better time to take a break in Liverpool than

in 2012, the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Beatles. But its not just the Fab Four which bring in the music-loving tourists, the city is also the World Capital of Pop. Visitors can still drop into the Cavern Club, where the Beatles began, for some live music as well as visiting the childhood homes of John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney.

Liverpool is also great for maritime history enthusiasts and home to two of the Premiership’s biggest football teams. The city is compact for walkers, offering fabulous new shops, buzzing new restaurants, hip hotels and trendy bars. And once you’ve had your fill of music and wine, the Walker Art Gallery is worth a detour and includes works by Hockney, Degas, Turner and Rembrandt.

Perhaps best for couples, Liverpool offers a fantastic welcome for a weekend break and so why not try the McCartney Suite at the Hard Days Night Hotel (www.harddaysnighthotel.com) - the world’s only Beatles inspired hotel. Could be a little kitsch, but isn’t, offering top class accommodation in the heart of the city.

ith lavish costumes, stunning scenery and glorious music, the renowned Vienna Festival Ballet’s

beautiful performance of Swan Lake is sure to please dance-lovers on the 18th April, while drama aficionados are in for a treat on the 19th when our friends at Reform Theatre Company bring Gordon Steel’s powerful play, Like A Virgin, described by The Times as “direct, unfussy, touching stuff.”

If you’re looking for a good laugh you’ll need to hurry for the last few tickets to see Montana’s comic genius Rich Hall. The critically-acclaimed TV comedian will be discussing a variety of topics in his own hilarious unique way on the 20th.

Music is provided by The Ultimate Eagles, whose simple yet bold mission statement is to play the Eagles’ music better than anybody, anywhere, second only to the Eagles themselves. Covering the Eagles music is not a thing you attempt half-heartedly. The Ultimate Eagles recreate the music with reverence, excitement and with a new stage show that focuses its bright lights on the 1970s, when the Eagles were at their mightiest. You just might find yourself whisked away to the sunny climes of Southern California on 23rd April.

If you’re interested in military and current affairs, the topical special-interest talk show, Soldier I, on 26th April, is the event for you. Eighteen years in the SAS saw Pete “Snapper” Winner, codenamed Soldier “I” survive the savage battle of Mirbat, parachute into the icy depths of the South Atlantic at the height of the Falklands War, and storm the Iranian Embassy during the most famous hostage crisis in the modern world. For the first time Pete details his close-protection work around the world, from the lawless streets of Moscow to escorting aid convoys into war-torn Bosnia. He also unveils the problems of

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder faced by many Special Forces veterans, and how he battled his own demons to continue his roller-coaster career. This is his story, told with a breathtaking take-no-prisoners attitude that brings each death-defying episode vividly to life.

Looking forward into next month, May gets of to a marvellous all-singing, all-dancing start on the 2nd with the sensational and critically-acclaimed show, The Essence of Ireland. Now with their biggest and most talented cast of dancers, singers, and musicians, the show combines breathtaking dance routines with the very best of Irish music, a touch of Irish craic, all cleverly woven into a heart-warming tale. Anyone, Irish or otherwise, cannot fail to be mesmerised by this truly amazing show. Come for the Craic!

review

HUGOugo is a tribute to cinema by acclaimed

filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who directs his first family-friendly feature film. Set in a 1930s Parisian train station, it follows a young orphan boy who is on a quest to solve a mystery involving his late father and an automaton.

During his adventure, Hugo has to avoid being captured by the dedicated but clumsy station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen) and pay a debt to a local toy maker (Oscar-winning Ben Kingsley). Befriending the toy shop owner’s adventure-seeking god-daughter, they conspire to solve the mystery of the automaton and along the way unlock hidden secrets and lost memories. The two young leads, Asa Butterfield and Chloë Grace Moretz, give exceptional performances and carry the whimsical film very well.

The film also features a lavish supporting cast, including Jude Law, Christopher Lee, Emily Mortimer and Ray

Winstone. Their parts bring a level of depth usually missing in films aimed at a younger audience. Although filmed using the latest 3-D cameras, Hugo doesn’t rely or focus on the gimmicks of many modern 3-D films, so the charmingly captured period works just as well in 2D on your TV as it did in the cinema.

As the film crescendos to its climax, not only the main story concludes beautifully and emotionally. There are several minor, intertwining characters in awkward confrontations who eventually blossom in their own satisfying outcomes. It’s the attention to detail in the inspiring story, vivid cinematography and heartfelt characters that makes this homage to the pioneering early years of film-making such a joy to watch.

Go ‘Mad as a Hatter’ this Easter at trentham monkey forest!

rom 31st March to 15th april -over the easter weekend and school holidays - Trentham

Monkey forest near stoke on Trent has planned lots of fun activities for all ages. There will be a special Easter themed treasure trail, lively weekend performances from Alice in Wonderland, story telling plus the chance to sing and dance with the Wonderland characters.

Trentham Monkey Forest, set in 60 acres of stunning woodland, is home to 140 endangered Barbary macaques and visitors can literally step into their world and learn about the fascinating primate through close contact with the 2 groups who live in the forest. The fantastic, open setting allows the macaques to display completely natural behaviour as they would in the wild. The Monkey Forest guides are always at hand to

give lots of information about the monkey’s lives and during the hourly feeding talks, tell visitors more about this amazing species.

“The Easter period is always a great time of year to visit us” commented Sue Wiper, Monkey Forest Director and Primatologist. “The forest is showing all the signs of spring with lush new leaves on the trees and the flowers starting to bloom. Even some of the monkeys look like they are coming in bloom with bigger tummies than usual so who knows, we may even see an Easter baby! Our youngsters from last year are also playing to the crowds - showing off and getting up to all sorts of antics, they are great to watch.”

Monkey Forest, Banana Café and the jungle shop open from 10.00 am – 4.00 pm with the last entry 1 hour before closing. Visit the website at www.monkey-forest.com for more information.

pace: it’s the first thing you notice when looking over your shoulder in peugeot’s compact Mpv, and plenty of it. It’s really quite clever, because the

kerbside appearance is that of a much smaller car (until, that is, you park it next to a family hatchback). Driving off the forecourt, first impressions are of car which feels light, maneuverable and easy to drive from the off. Take a good look around though and (unlike some MPV’s we’ve driven) you quickly realize the size and space that can be utilised.

The 5008 boasts 2506 litres of space* inside the cabin with all but the front two seats down. Even when all 7 seats are in their upright position you can still accommodate the driver and 6 adult companions.

The handling is responsive and the 5008 doesn’t feel unwieldy even on smaller B-roads, the ride supple and well damped. The entire team were deeply impressed by the sound insulation, as even under acceleration we were able to hold a quiet conversation without struggling - it’s a quality you’d really appreciate on a long journey with all the family on board.

However, without doubt the single most impressive feature in this particular model is the engine. We had to double check that this wasn’t the 2.0 l model, and even then our editor didn’t believe it. Smooth, strong and refined, this little powertrain stunned us with how effortlessly it pulled the sizeable 5008 along. It’s a real testament to modern diesel development, and with ample torque available in typical diesel fashion performance felt far more brisk than the stats would suggest.

Comfort and convenience are the 5008’s forté. The 7 individual seats, 5 of which we managed to fold down and

back up again in a matter of seconds (on our first attempt!) proved extremely versatile - an impromptu visit to a certain Swedish furniture store confirmed that all manner of flat-packed furniture will fit in the car, along with the kids, with ease.

Storage-wise, you may be a little disappointed at the limited space in the glove compartment - but look further and you’ll notice Peugeot have cleverly designed storage space for each of the seats including small practical boxes in the cabin floor.

With options such as the Panoramic Cielo roof, various video and audio packs, electric parking brake/hill start assist, distance alert and the head up display that projects essential driving information onto an anti-reflective translucent panel available on models across the range, the 5008’s options are extensive and don’t disappoint.

verdict: The 5008 is a well executed, practical MPV - fuel efficient, quiet and great value in base spec. What it lacks in visual drama and excitement it more than compensates for with its flexibility, build quality and refinement, which is exactly why you’d buy a car of this type. As Winner of ‘What Car? Best MPV 2010’, it’s certainly difficult to fault, and we were thoroughly impressed too.

or many of us, it’s the one meal of the week that’s not shoehorned into a busy routine of work,

domestic chores and children’s activities. Yet just 10% of the population now sits down to a traditional roast each week and I’m not always one of them. So I was definitely keen to experience lunch at The Shropshire.

The Shropshire Golf Centre in Muxton celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2012 and has just spent £40,000 upgrading its facilities, including the function room where the Sunday lunch carvery takes place. And it’s proving very popular with a number of events and weddings already in the calendar.

But back to Sunday lunch! Now I have to admit when I found out it was a carvery I wasn’t exactly filled with joy. If the word conjures up distant memories of poor quality meat, soggy vegetables and hours of indigestion, you may, like me have given the old carvery a wide berth the last twenty years. This experience, however, I am happy to say

was something of a revelation.Having been greeted by the team of young,

friendly staff we started our three-course lunch with chicken liver pate with brioche toast and tomato chutney and a smoked salmon roulade with leaves and mixed pepper dressing. The combination of the soft pate, crunchy toast and robust, but not overpowering chutney was delicious. I was assured the salmon was equally good with its generous cream cheese filling. From across the other side of the table it was as pretty as a picture, the mixed pepper garnish not only looked appetising but added great flavour too.

Of course the main event of Sunday lunch is the roast and again I was pleasantly surprised. There was a selection of beef, pork and chicken all cooked perfectly by head chef Chris. We chose beef and pork, the former was just pink enough to keep everyone happy while the pork was tender and juicy and passed the all-important crackling test with a reassuring crunch.

By now the dining room was starting to fill up and we were soon surrounded by a number of families and individuals all enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the conservatory. Being a golf club you might wonder if there is a dress code but smart casual is definitely the order of the day.

The staff were friendly and attentive to everyone but certainly not overpowering and it was clear to see that everyone was enjoying themselves. The conversation was flowing, exactly what you want from a shared meal together. It was also great to see the wide age range of diners, from eight to seventy plus.

If like me you love desserts then you won’t be disappointed with the selection at The Shropshire. With favourites such as apple pie and custard, New York cheesecake, crème brûlée and chocolate fudge cake there’s something to please everyone. We opted for baked New York cheesecake with fruit compote and lemon glazed tart with lemon Chantilly cream. The former was deliciously

creamy, so much so that my guest could easily have eaten another slice, even though the first was generous enough, while my lemon tart had a good sharp lemon taste to round off the meal.

After a couple of coffees we certainly had that relaxed Sunday afternoon feeling.

I’ve changed my mind about carveries, well good ones like they serve at The Shropshire anyway. When you think about it a carvery is a win, win situation, while it should never be mistaken for an all you can eat buffet, a carvery provides choice and allows you to have as much or as little as you want, so it’s perfect for most ages and appetites.

The food was well prepared with care and attention and the presentation of the dishes that came out of the kitchen were definitely more akin to fine dining than pub fare.

It’s also really good value for money with two courses for £12 and three for £15 with under 12’s half price on a normal Sunday. Perhaps its time that more of us put Sunday lunch back on our busy schedules.

lthough the traditional method is to cream together the butter and sugar (then add the egg, mixing well, before adding the flour) good

results can be achieved by just placing all the ingredients in the mixing bowl at the same time (with the exception of any additional fruit if using) as does mixing the cupcake ingredients in a food mixer or processor.

A level tablespoon in each paper case will make medium sized cupcakes about 7.5cm/3-inches in diameter. A heaped teaspoon of cupcake mixture in each paper case or cupcake hole will make small cupcakes about 5cm/2-inches in diameter. You can make larger and deeper cupcakes by placing more of the cupcake mixture in the cases or cupcake hole however, never fill the case or hole more than 2/3rds full.

Set your oven to 190C, 375F, Gas Mark 5 although if you have a fan assisted oven, you should reduce the temperature accordingly.

If you are using the above guidelines or a heaped teaspoon of cupcake mixture per cake, 15 minutes should be long enough however, you can test whether the cupcake is cooked through by pushing a wooden toothpick into the centre. If it comes out clean, then the cupcake mixture has cooked through. If you decide to make slightly larger cupcakes, they will need an extra 5 minutes or so.

Experts take a starring role.

Students at the lord Silkin School are not just receiving an education, they’re being equipped with the skills and the capabilities to be a “work-ready 21st century” citizen.

lessons for Lifehat’s the view of headteacher Trevor goddard, who has led an amazing turnaround at the south Telford school in the last two years.

Named the ‘most improved school’ in Telford & Wrekin, the Lord Silkin School is preparing its students for adult life, giving them the skills and qualifications which will see them become employable, responsible, young people who progress onto the next stage – whether that’s into a job, an apprenticeship or further education.

An education at the Lord Silkin includes mentoring from high achievers in sport, learning about real-life issues including how to manage finances and this year saw students chosen as Gold Ambassadors for an Olympic scheme encouraging healthy lifestyles.

Recently the students were taught how to manage their cash following a report which revealed the ‘have now, pay later’ culture was plunging thousands of youngsters into debt. The Stirchley School joined forces with the Citizens Advice Bureau to teach pupils about money management and how to avoid ‘dodgy’ lending deals.

Last year, the CAB in Telford & Wrekin dealt with personal debt issues totalling £21 million. Around £1.1 million of this debt belonged to people under the age of 25.

Headteacher Trevor Goddard said: “It is our job not only to educate our students but also to prepare them for adulthood and the world they face after leaving us. When credit can be so easy to come by, it is important that students know the dangers of allowing debt to spiral out of control. Many of our students will be going on to higher education and will also need student loans, so it’s important they understand what taking these loans on means for their own finances.”

In addition to learning about keeping a healthy bank balance, two of the students have been picked to encourage other youngsters to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The 2012 Olympic Games are being used as a catalyst to encourage youngsters to motivate each other, with pupils Emma Plumb and Michael Woolley picked as “Gold Ambassadors” supporting the ideals of the Olympic movement.

The teenagers are now officially part of London’s promise to use the power of the 2012 Olympics to inspire millions of young people to take an active interest in all kinds of sport.

The school’s connection with sport last year extended to a link-up with England international women’s rugby star Heather Fisher. Heather, who was also a member of the Great Britain bobsleigh team, was guest of honour at the school’s awards evening and gave an inspiring speech to youngsters.

Mr Goddard added: “We are delighted to be able to welcome Heather to the school, she has visited previously to work with students on motivational projects. It was also a great opportunity for us to give our students well-deserved recognition for their efforts. We are an inclusive school where every child matters, so we are delighted we can hand out these awards to students who have made great progress and achieved amazing results.”

The Lord Silkin School is the most improved school in Telford & Wrekin, achieving a 100 per cent pass rate for five or more GCSEs, with 81 per cent of students achieving grades A-C, ten per cent above the national average.
