Fresh flowers adorn our sanctuary every Sunday because of you. The only way we can sup-port this tradition is to have individuals or groups sign up to sponsor the flowers for each Sunday. Flowers can be tak-en home or given to someone after the Sunday worship service. Martha Gaskins Elementary Open House
HUMC has been asked to greet the parents of
Martha Gaskins students at their Open House on
Thursday, 9/22/16. The Open House begins at 5:30
pm so we need to be there at 5 pm. We should be
able to leave around 5:45 or 6 pm at the latest. If you would like
to greet our community at this Open House please contact Kathy
George 205-655-0860.
Are you taking part in National Hunger Action Month? If so, you may have thought about what it means to be content as you read your prayer calendar for September 10th, and you read Psalm 23. Pray for those in our community who strug-gle to put food on their tables as you continue to use the Society of St. Andrew’s 2016 Calendar for Prayer and Ac-tion throughout September. Remember the children of our community that are hungry, those whose refrigerator may only contain an item or two or is completely empty as well as those over age 65 in Jefferson County that are hungry and live at or below the poverty line. Did you know that 29.4%* of the children and 10.7%* of those over age 65 that live in Jefferson County live below the poverty line? Did you know that 34.2%* of the individuals 25 & over
in Jefferson County did not graduate from high school?
*from alabamapossible - How can you help that struggling
student so that they know hope and can dream of the life
God has for them? Pray, encourage, give of your time to
help a teacher, read to a child, can you do this?
Did you know that produce with small blemishes that
are not pretty enough is rejected by stores? Did you
know that companies that change their logos/branding
throw away their old produce just because it does not
have the current company branding? The SofSA works
with these suppliers to salvage this produce and volunteers
from every walk of life (those in need as well as executives)
work together to distribute this produce to those that have
‘bare’ refrigerators and desperately need food.
HUNGRY READERS SEPTEMBER BOOK: The Boys in the Boat,
by Daniel James Brown
Our September book is one that is not to be missed! This book tells the story of nine working
class American boys whose row-ing team competed against the elite German team in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. The book,
which blends history and Olympic sport, is a tale about beating the
odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times. Join us on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 6:00 in the DDR for covered dish dinner
followed by our discussion.

Dear friends, O God, our help in ages past; our hope for years to come… This historic hymn by Isaac Watts paraphrases Psalm 90. It is also the theme for this year’s Stewardship campaign at Huffman United Method-ist. When I look back at our congregation over the years, I am struck by the many things that God has brought us through. We have had many good times, but there have been hard times as well. Through it all, God has been so faithful to us! Because of God’s faithfulness, I have great hope for the future. I believe that you will agree that many good things are happening in the life and ministry of this congregation. As we prepare to give in support of our mission and ministry, I can think of no more appropriate hymn to cap-ture the spirit of faithful hope. With the guidance of John Floyd and Charlotte McCool, you will be hearing in the coming weeks about the exciting possibilities for ministry here. You will be receiving letters from our program staff as they share about ministry with our children, youth, and adults. In October’s wor-ship services, you will also be hearing from key leaders in our congrega-tion about the ways our church is organized for effective ministry with our community and beyond. By the middle of October, you will receive an opportunity to support the ministries of this church. We call it our “Covenant of Giving.” On Oc-tober 30, we will celebrate God’s covenant harvest. On that day we will share a fellowship meal following morning worship as we praise God for all that God has in store for us. God really is our hope for the future, and if God’s faithfulness in the past is any indication, that future is going to be a blessing indeed! So watch for your mail, come worship with us each Sunday, and antici-pate the blessings of God’s future! Bless you all, Brother Ed
Why do we have acolytes and crucifers? The Crucifer leads the processional by bringing the cross into the sanctuary to remind us that Christ is among us. The Acolyte follows the Crucifer to bring in the light of Christ. The Acolyte takes the light out to remind us to take the light into the world. We should show
our respect for the cross and light as they exit the sanctuary by watching them and not moving into the aisle until they have exited.
Mission Trip to Mexico Mega Missions is traveling to Ciudad Victoria November 3-8. We will be building a church, sharing items with people in near-by villages, and taking a meal to people living in the local land-fill. Please remember us in your prayers. If you would like more information about the trip, or to learn about ways you can help, see Stephanie Sparks.
